Starz announced actor Andy Whitfield, star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand will not continue in his role for the series’ second season, scheduled to begin in September 2011. Whitfield’s doctors have advised the actor to resume an aggressive treatment regimen for a recurrence of cancer. Starz has not made any decisions about the future of Spartacus: Blood and Sand though the series’ prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will continue to air in January 2011. Whitfield released this statement:

“It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far,” said Whitfield.

Furthermore, Managing Director of Starz Media, Carmi Zlotnick said:

“Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family. We will address our programming plans at some later date.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

GMC made a one-year, first-look agreement with actress/director/producer Kim Fields. As part of the deal, Fields will offer projects to GMC on a first-look basis that could include scripted series, documentaries, made-for-TV movies and reality shows. For all projects, Fields would serve as director, producer, writer or talent.

Ryan Murphy and Howard Gordon are working together on an untitled, one-hour procedural drama perhaps for FOX. The duo pitched the show idea through 20th Century Fox Television where they both are affiliated. FOX will likely hand a put pilot order to the project.

CBS’ comedy series The Big Bang Theory extended its production hiatus due to series star’s Kaley Cuoco’s recent off-set injury. Cuoco broke her leg in a horse accident and originally was written out of the plot for one week, followed by a previously scheduled one-week production halt. Cuoco is still recuperating from her accident in an L.A. hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

ABC picked up James Cameron’s television adaptation of his 1994 film True Lies.  ABC gave the project a script commitment with penalty. Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television are producing with Rene Echevarria as writer/showrunner and co-executive producer.

Peter Coyote landed a recurring role as the district attorney on NBC’s Law & Order: Los Angeles, per THR.  Coyote’s character as DA will oversee the deputy Das played by Alfred Molina, Terrence Howard, Regina Hall and Megan Boone.

Casting Call: OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network is casting for the new program Enough Already! with Peter Walsh. The show is looking for people who are ready to conquer their clutter and disorganization and are ready to change their life. Participants on the show will work with organizational expert, Peter Walsh who will help them achieve their goals with home and life. OWN is looking for Los Angeles area homeowners to participate.
