~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Following up on its recent pick-up of summer hit series Switched at Birth, ABC Family announced it is adding another season of Make It or Break It and approving a back-order of The Lying Game.  Fueled by the launch of original series Switched at Birth and the return of Pretty Little Liars and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, ABC Family posted its largest summer audience ever in primetime with 1.48 million total viewers; 705,000 with A18-49; and 431,000 with A18-34.  Furthermore, ABC Family has okayed four new pilots in production:

  • Bunheads, from executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Gilmore Girls, Roseanne), is a one-hour scripted drama about Michelle, a Las Vegas showgirl who suddenly marries a man and moves to his small town and takes on an uneasy position at her new mother-in-law’s dance school.
  • Intercept is a one-hour technology-themed action drama about a group of college students who solve crimes after one creates a high-tech device that intercepts conversations throughout the West Coast.  Ray Wright is the writer and executive producer.
  • Baby Daddy is a half-hour comedy from executive producer, Dan Berendsen (The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) centered on 20-something Ben who becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl when she’s left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend.  Ben decides to raise the baby with help from his mother, brother and a couple of close friends.
  • Village People, from executive producer Meg DeLoatch (Brothers, Eve, One on One) is a multi-camera half-hour comedy about a single, high-powered career woman who adopts a baby from a teen mom who ends up a part of her life as well.

Half-dozen new projects have been approved by MTV:

  • Reality series based on the feature film Catfish from Nev Schulman with the series exploring what happens when online friends meet in person.  Relativity Real is producing.
  • Hoods follows one celebrity per week who returns to their hometown.  The pilot episode showcases singer Kesha visiting Nashville.
  • Wait Till Next Year is a sports-themed show about a high school football team that is usually on the losing end and its search for a first-time win after a five-year loss streak.
  • Wake Brothers features wakeboarding brothers Philip and Bob Soven and how they compete both professionally and against each other.
  • Underemployed is a scripted project written by Craig Wright about the anxiety college graduates face after leaving school and the difficult time they have finding their place in the world.  Series will star Jared Kusnitz and Inbar Lavi.
  • Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous stars comedian Bo Burnham in a comedy about a person who leaves school and hires a documentary film crew to help him pursue the current American Dream of becoming famous with no obvious talent.

The 1980s cult favorite Beauty and the Beast TV series that starred Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton is getting dusted off by CBS Television Studios for The CW.  The updated version will be modernized and the love story will gain a procedural element.  Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper are writing the script and will serve as executive producers.  The original Beauty and the Beast series ran on CBS from 1987 to 1990.  ABC is also developing a pilot based more on the public domain fairy tale story.
