Cynopsis: Sports
09/17/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, September 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Saturday marks National Hunting and Fishing Day this week, and with the government reporting that the number of hunters and anglers in America is once again growing, Cynopsis Sports spoke with Sportsman Channel CEO Gavin Harvey about the state of the lifestyle.
Sportsman Channel announced last week that its reality program Pig Man: The Series recently delivered the network with the top ranking in the key M18-49 category among mid-sized networks in that half hour, according to Nielsen. Other series are finding similar traction and in this week’s Q&A, Harvey talks about the momentum, controversy and the surprising demo watching the channel.
Harvey on the state of the channel: After going against the big media companies, it is really gratifying to get the wins and traction we’ve seen. We became Nielsen rated in the beginning of the second quarter and-compared to our internal as well as the external data we have-we continue to be up double digits minimum, in some demos it is actually triple digits. A year ago, we made a focus on social media and it has exploded. They are all good indicators for us. We are hitting highs, such as Pig Man: The Series. Obviously, the sportsman nation has responded in a big way to what we are doing. We are building something more than a network, it is really a movement. It is something that this massive sportsman nation needs a place to call home. One thing that surprises people is the number of women coming into this space. We’ve known that. We have women who are as natural in the hunting, fishing and shooting world as men. There is no gender gap in that regard.
On the competition: There really is no one else that has what we have. You are seeing a proliferation of shows on bigger networks of people dabbling in this space because their research departments have woken up and decided that there are a lot of people out there that like this stuff. So they go out and create series about alligator hunting and pig hunting or fishing for big fish, and say ‘we should do reality series on the colorful characters who are in this lifestyle.’ We’ve been doing that for a long time in this space. Before there was Duck Dynasty, we had Duck Commander. Before there were hog hunting shows on A&E, there was Pig Man: The Series on Sportsman. These are lifestyle shows that we believe stand up to anything on the other networks. It just is that they have a bigger platform to introduce that lifestyle.
On controversy: We have to take on the controversial subjects that our community is talking about, like the wolf special. Everybody knows that the reintroduction of the wolf into the United States was a controversial policy. It has been amazingly successful. It is great to have the wolf back and they’ve introduced hunting as a way to manage them. Non-hunters don’t understand the role of hunting in maintaining healthy populations. We have taken on that subject by doing a two-part series and I think we helped some people understand it better, while some people did not. It was very controversial but we had to take it on. Most people don’t understand that the explosion of pigs in this country has become an epidemic. We took on the controversial subject. Texas has had to go to the point of allowing hunters-mind you it is not sport hunting- but as hunters you can now aerial hunt from helicopters in Texas because they are being overrun.
On his plans for National Hunting and Fishing Day: For the American Sportsman, every day is National Hunting and Fishing Day but having an official “Day” is a big cultural punctuation point. It draws attention to a profound tradition that has shaped our national identity, and motivates people to carry on that tradition. I will be in Colorado, bowhunting for elk in the Rocky Mountains, thanking my lucky stars that I live in a country that treasures the outdoors, maintains healthy fish and wildlife populations, and mandates access to public land for all people to enjoy.
The NHL dropped the curtain after failing to agree with players on a new CBA and have now imposed the dreaded lockout to mark the sport’s second in the past eight years. Subsequently, the league’s website has shut down its player reference section and pulled all pictures of the athletes. However, NHL executives have not scrapped any pre- or regular season games at this point.
BTN was not able to lock down a last-minute deal with Dish and has now been dropped from the satellite company. In a statement, the network said “As of September 14th, BTN’s distribution agreement with Dish expired despite our best efforts to finalize an agreement. We are disappointed that Dish does not see the value in the network in the same way that so many of their customers do, including Big Ten students, alumni, fans and viewers across the country who continue to pay Dish for a channel they no longer receive.”
NFL Network’s new Thursday night package is already paying off. The Bears/Packers game opened up the channel’s slate by delivering an average of 8.6 million viewers on the channel (not including over-the-air stations in Chicago and Green Bay/Milwaukee). The viewership ranks as the most-watched opener in the seven seasons of Thursday Night Football. The game bested last year’s opener by 62% and ranked as Thursday’s most-watched program among all shows on cable. Complementary coverage of the game online and via mobile devices scored an 85% jump in unique viewers and a 100% increase in live streams viewed over last year’s season average.
While we are on the topic, NFL Network’s A Football Life will continue on Wednesday with a full-season wiring of Ray Lewis that will air at 8p. As a participant, Lewis became the first player in NFL history to wear a wireless microphone in every game for an entire season last year.
Manny Pacquiao finally has a return date for his next fight in the ring. The famed boxer will square off against Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time on Dec. 8 and Top Rank will formally announce the bout today. The pair will fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on HBO PPV. If that date sounds familiar, it is because it is the same day as UFC’s next event on FOX.

Best Buy announced that the retailer will continue its NASCAR partnership next season, and will renew its sponsorship deal with Roush Fenway Racing Team for the 2013 Sprint Cup Series. The company will serve as primary sponsor of Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 17 Ford Fusion for 12 races as well as Carl Edwards’ No. 99 Ford for four races. In addition, Best Buy will be an associate sponsor for each as well.
WWE reportedly announced that the company was pulling “dated and edgier” video clips from its website and other media platforms in a move toward being more family friendly. The clips were generally dated from its “Attitude” era and company co-founder Linda McMahon’s political opponent recently used footage from that in an attack ad against the Senate candidate.
