Pew Research Center just released its study, People & the Press, their biennial report on media consumption. Some of the informational nuggets include:

  • Respondents said they spend 57 minutes per day with TV, radio and newspaper news and 13 minutes more each day with online news.
  • More than a third of Americans, or 36%, said they consume news from digital and traditional sources, while 39% said they rely only on traditional sources for news. 9% of Americans get their news only through the internet and mobile devices without also using traditional sources.
  • The report highlighted that 50% of respondents regularly watch local TV news while 40% said they get news from newspapers and 28% said they regularly watch network evening news.
  • In the more than 10 years since Pew has been tracking these research results, more people claimed they regularly watch Fox News Channel at 23% than CNN at 18%. This represents a 6-point dip in CNN’s audience share from the 2008 report with Fox News Channel remaining steady.
  • Additionally, more viewers aged 65+ now watch Fox News Channel at 30% than CNN at 21%, a result that has flip-flopped since 2008 when 30% in this age category watched CNN and 20% watched Fox News Channel.
  • MSNBC’s audience share declined from 15% in 2008 to 11% in 2010 and CNBC’s audience also dipped from 12% in 2008 to 8% this year.
  • Almost half of the respondents said they find news online three or more days per week, up from 37% two years ago. One-third of respondents said they get their online news via a particular search engine which is up from 19% in 2008. Yahoo! was the most popular online news source at 28% followed by CNN at 16%, Google at 15%, Fox News at 8%, MSNBC at 7%, ABC and NBC both at 2% and NPR and CBS both at 1%.

This day in History:  1949 – The Ladies Professional Golf Association of America was formed.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  This TV family had a very “futuristic” life – they used vehicles such as The Chariot (an amphibious tracked vehicle) and had superfast household devices such as the and auto-matic laundry which washed, folded and packed clothes just seconds.  They also had to contend with bizarre enemies, including Tybo, a large talking carrot and giant people eating flowers.  What was the name of this family?  THE ROBINSONS on LOST IN SPACE Kudos to: Phyllis McQuillan-MSG Media/NY; BJ Smith-EPIX/NY; Dennis Maguire-Bright House Networks/Riverview; Marc Mondry-Madison Square Garden/NY; Milt Rost-KVRR/Fargo; Dan Whitford-Maximum Direct/Chicago; Bryan Nyenhuis-SpotPlus/Dallas; Cynthia New-Charter Media/St. Louis; Steven Wishnoff/LA; Dennis Aimino-ABC/LA; Cammie Buerry-FFE adventas/Las Vegas; Paul Blutter-General American Group/Northridge;

Today’s Trivia Question: What was it Hoss found in the woods after rescuing a little person in a green suit from being chased by a bear? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
