During a meeting with the press inside Twitter HQ in San Francisco, CEO Dick Costolo revealed several tidbits of information about the current and future status of the popular micro-blogging site. First, the social media site has 100 million active users, 40% of whom don’t even tweet, but just read others’ tweets, as well as 400 million monthly visitors, which is up from 250 million this past January. Second, Promoted Tweets are coming to your stream, and it doesn’t matter how you access the service (online or via Twitter or third party apps) or if you’re following that particular advertiser. The ads will be targeted based on the user’s interest, a.k.a. who you follow and what you tweet about. Finally, Twitter is looking to unify all interfaces into one simple platform between different clients.


HP had a strong presence on Project Runway last week. In the episode of the popular reality show, designers were asked to produce a full runway show. HP video cameras were used to shoot films that served as video backdrops for the judged runway show, HP TouchSmart desktop PCs were used to not only design the garments and fabrics used for the runway, but also edit the video footage. The HP Veer smartphone even got in on the action as it was used by team members to keep connected.

A new website called “Judge it Live” will debut the week of September 19 to coincide with the season premiers of Dancing with the Stars on ABC and X Factor on FOX. The site, which will also have a mobile app version, allows visitors to judge selected live entertainment events in real time and compare their critiques to other viewers.

MSG Network and the New York Rangers will integrate Twitter into its broadcasts of upcoming games between future NHL-hopefuls. While watching games on the channel, viewers can send questions to the games’ announcers via Twitter. The guys in the booth will answer questions, and when appropriate, relay them over to the players during stoppages in the game. Some of the tweets, accompanied with the #NYRprospects hash-tag, will even be posted as on-screen graphics.

You will be able to group Facebook friends into “Smart Lists.” As of now, Facebook is auto-grouping your friends and acquaintances into three groups: people you work with, people you attended school with, and people who live within 50 miles of you.


In a blog post announcing Google’s purchase of Zagat, Marissa Mayer, Google VP of Local, Maps and Location Services, said, “Moving forward, Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering.” With its search products sometimes proving to be too expensive for local businesses, Google has been trying to get in on the local advertising game for quite some time, says Ad Age Digital. Its attempt to purchase Yelp two years ago fell through and Google Places has only been able to be an aggregator of outside content. With Zagat’s highly-respected reviews and ratings now under Google’s control, the search and media giant will now be able to offer strong local content of their own.

Rovi Corporation‘s recently unveiled DivX Plus Streaming technology will be integrated into Broadcom‘s System-on-a-Chip platforms for set-top boxes and connected digital TVs. Rovi will demonstrate the collaborative technology at IBC 2011.
Comcast subsidiary, thePlatform, has secured an agreement to provide back-end video management for Liberty Global‘s TV Everywhere service. Liberty Global serves 18 million customers across 14 countries, largely in Europe, Chile and Australia. The TV Everywhere service will be a part of Liberty Global’s “Horizon” video and entertainment platform for the home.
AOL is refusing to sell popular tech news blog, TechCrunch, back to its founder Michael Arrington. The company is currently in the midst of severance negotiations with Mr. Arrington, with AllThingsD reporting that, if the issue isn’t revolved, this situation could end up in court. This skirmish began after the revelation of Arrington starting CrunchFund, a $20 million venture fund backed by AOL, called into question the influential tech blog’s future editorial independence.


 At Mobile Marketer‘s Mobile Marketing Summit, data presented from an InsightExpress study indicated that mobile marketing may be more effective than other forms of advertising. Mobile beat out print, online and TV advertising across almost all but one single-channel metrics and even placed ahead of multi-channel marketing efforts. The study also focused on smartphone users and found that:

  • 60% claim they intend to make more in-store purchases this holiday season than on the internet.
  • 40% are willing to make purchases from their mobile devices in-store.
  • Consumers are more likely to visit third-party sites than a retailer’s site, but 67% of users will visit both resources for information when in-store.

The latest SMART Report from Millenial Media, covering mobile ad trends for the month of July, has been released. Some of the interesting findings include:

  • Ad campaigns that gave consumers an opportunity to watch video grew 69% month-over-month, and made up over 30% of all campaigns.
  • Ad campaigns that allowed users to participate in some way on social media increased 34% month-over-month.
  • Local market targeting grew 22% month-over-month. 67% of all Targeted Audience campaigns on Millennial Media’s network used local market targeting.
  • 86% of travel ad campaigns gave consumers the option to download an app.
  • Sustained in-market presence was the goal for 79% of all travel campaigns on Millennial’s network.

Google has finally rolled out an iOS version of its Google Music Beta service. However, it’s not a native app, but a mobile web version. It functions exactly like an app would, but it’s available through the Safari browser; it will even continue to play music if you exit out of the browser. Simply go to on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to check it out.
Smozzy is an Android app that lets you browse the web on your phone without needing a data plan. Since it uses SMS and MMS to send requests and receive content, it only works in the U.S., is only available for T-Mobile users and you need to have an unlimited messaging plan. The user interface is very basic and isn’t encrypted, so don’t browse secure content or send private information like passwords via the app. [Via TechCrunch]


Last week, Facebook added Erskine Bowles, the former Clinton White House chief of staff and current co-chair of the Obama Administration’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, to its board of directors. The board now has seven members.
