MIPCOM 2011 – First Impressions: Cannes is no longer “new” to me, having been here several times. I know where my apartment is, I know where the Palais, Majestic, Carlton and The Grand are. And having been to MIPCOM Junior a couple of times, I’m familiar with the Martinez. I’ve even be here enough times to have favorite restaurants and neighborhoods. And yet, like most cities, the more things stay the same in Cannes, the more they change. One of my favorite waiters at Cafe Romma has moved to La Bohemia. My favorite wine shop has changed hands. And the ugly vinyl tablecloth on the patio table at my apartment has been traded in for a brand new ugly vinyl tablecloth. And the biggest change of all? The dogs are getting bigger. The tiny teacup purse dogs have grown. They’re now standing on their own four feet, on leashes, or sitting nicely by the owners chair at every cafe and restaurant. Mind you, they aren’t full sized German Shephards yet (tho I did see more than a couple Golden Retrievers), but rather all around 15-25 pounds. It’s not that I dislike the teacup dogs, but glad to see the larger versions are growing on the French. And the other thing that changes every fall are the shop windows with the new fall fashions. Ruffles are out, pleats, lace and fur are in. The new black is Earth tones — browns, rustic reds, blacks, and a healthy dose of oranges. Big wide brown leather belts – 2″-4″ wide – worn outside the chunky sweater, or over the sleek long sweater, which in turn is over the even sleekier skinny (oil sold separately) slacks. I like the earth tones, and I do like orange and the wide belts, but the skinnier than skinny slacks, I’m not so sure that’s a great look for everyone. I’m just sayin’. And I’m sorry to tell you Ladies, the Louis Vuitton window on the Croissette is sporting Peter Pan collars. I hope that one doesn’t catch on.
Classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show is celebrating its golden 50th anniversary in 2011 and will be back on TV Land’s lineup beginning today, the same date the series first premiered on CBS in 1961. TV Land selected 36 of the show’s top episodes and is airing them starting today through this Friday from 6p to 9p in addition to airing a marathon of the episodes on October 8 and 9 from Noon-9p each day. Following this commemoration week, TV Land will air The Dick Van Dyke Show in its regular time slot at 7p on weekdays. Originally, The Dick Van Dyke Show ran on CBS for five seasons from 1961 to 1966 starring Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore along with co-stars Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam. Carl Reiner created the series and was head writer and producer.
New sitcom Up All Night on NBC has added Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) to its cast playing Ava’s (Maya Rudolph) new boyfriend Kevin, described as a nice, single dad. Lee’s first appearance will be in November. Lee also plays quirky police detective Dwight Hendricks on TNT’s Memphis Beat and is waiting to find out if the drama is renewed for a third season.
Last Friday, The Online Network via Prospect Park said Ron Calivati, the head writer/consulting producer of ABC’s One Life To Live will remain with the show once it goes online. Calivati’s deal is pending a WGA agreement. More One Life To Live cast members will also continue with the soap including Melissa Archer, Kelley Missal, Sean Ringgold, Andrew Trischitta and Jerry VerDorn to join Ted King, Michael Eason, Kassie DePaiva and Erika Slezak. The actor’s deals are pending a final agreement with AFTRA.
Nordic World made a license deal with Fox Television Studios for the black comedy Dag (10 eps/30 min). Currently, the second season of Dag is pulling in record-breaking ratings on Norway’s TV2. Producer Cary Brokaw (Closer, Angels In America) and writer Stephen Godchaux (Dead Like Me, Spin City) will adapt the series with Fox Television Studios for the US market and serve as executive producers. Dag is about an eccentric couple’s therapist who thinks everyone should live alone though his personal solitude and self-medication is broken when he falls in love with an equally emotionally-damaged woman.
Steven S. DeKnight, the co-creator/executive producer and showrunner of Spartacus signed an exclusive two-year overall deal with Starz. Presently, Starz has a three-year deal with DeKnight since the 2009 series launch of Spartacus. DeKnight will also continue in his present position on Spartacus: Vengeance which bows its second season in January.
BBC Worldwide’s channel BBC America forged a non-exclusive development arrangement with independent production company Clerkenwell Films, based in the UK to fund a collection of potential projects over an eighteen month time frame. The agreement includes developing new series aimed at the BBC America audience and BBC Worldwide will further target co-production partners for commissioned shows.
