~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Human interest segment On the Road is revived by CBS News as a new weekly segment.  CBS News originally aired On the Road segments with Charles Kuralt from 1967 to 1980 during CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.  Kuralt completed more than 600 segments and he and his crew covered more than a million miles as they related human interest stories from around the country.  Reporter Steve Hartman will host the fresh weekly feature that will air in Friday’s CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley.

Based on BBC America’s popular series Top Gear, the network debuts Top Gear Top 40 on November 28 with back-to-back premiere episodes at 8p and 9p.  The eight-episode series counts down the top vehicle challenges and worldwide thrills featuring hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May as voted on by fans of the show.  The auto challenges that tallied the highest number of votes will be revealed during a special 90-minute finale airing on December 26.  In 2012, BBC America will debut a new season of Top Gear as well as the new original series Richard Hammond’s Crash Course which also makes its world premiere.

BBC America also said it will now premiere new series Would You Rather …? with Graham Norton a month later on December 3 at 11p as part of the network’s Ministry of Laughs comedy block.  The original comedy panel show was previously set to debut this Saturday, November 5.

Starting this Tuesday, MTV is tweaking the schedule of two of its series as Chelsea Settles and I Used To Be Fat will move to 10p and 1030p respectively.  Also airing this Tuesday is a special episode of series True Life titled True Life: I’m Addicted to Exercise at 9p.

Last Friday, IFC opened a new music video series sponsored by Jameson Irish Whiskey called One Track Mind as announced by The A.V. Club.  The program delves into the origins of a standout song from a band.  The A.V. Club visits the bands in their hometowns to find out where the song was developed, where it was written and the meaning and emotion behind the song.  The series airs over ten weeks.  One Track Mind is The A.V. Club’s fifth original video series.

A new third season of Quints By Surprise premieres November 8 at 10p on TLC.  With six half-hour episodes concluding on November 22, the series follows the Jones family consisting of six total kids, including the two-year old quints that are transitioning into big kid beds.

Thursday’s premiere of Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head series on MTV, marking the return of the animated duo at 10p, attracted 3.3 million total viewers and delivered a 2.6 P12-34 rating.  Afterwards at 1030p, MTV’s debut of new series Good Vibes drew in 1.6 million total viewers and posted a 1.4 P12-34 ratings.

Friday’s conclusion of the World Series on FOX where the St. Louis Cardinals won the title in the seventh game has become the most-watched World Series game since 2004 when the Red Sox won for the first time in 86 years.  Friday’s World Series game tallied 25.4 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

On Friday, CBS and Warner Bros. announced a licensing deal was forged between The CW Network and Hulu.  The five-year deal will allow Hulu to stream CW shows on Hulu and Hulu Plus.  CW shows included in the deal are 90210, America’s Next Top Model, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and Nikita as well as frosh series Ringer, Hart of Dixie and The Secret Circle.  The agreement says up to five in-season episodes will be offered on Hulu Plus for eight days following the broadcast and afterward they will be available on the ad-supported free Hulu website.

Beginning tomorrow across the pond, PBS UK will launch on Virgin Media TV (channel 243) as well on Sky (channel 166). This marks the first time the American PBS network will broadcast to British viewers.  Content will include the Ken Burns documentary Prohibition, the current affairs program Frontline, PBS NewsHour airing each weekday evening as well as history shows including the American Experience series and the American version of Antiques Roadshow among other offerings.

Univision is working with Scott Sternberg Productions (SSP) allowing the multi-media production company to represent the global distribution of its reality show Nuestra Belleza Latina (Our Latin Beauty).  The series is presently preparing for its sixth season on Univision and it is the first original format produced internally at Univision in Miami that will branch out to other territories worldwide.  Nuestra Belleza Latina’s season five finale that aired last May on Univision, delivered the most-watched finale in the show’s history with 4.9 million average viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Journalist Lisa Ling has sold a single-camera comedy script to ABC titled No. One Son.  The project is from DreamWorks Television and ABC Studios and is about a widowed Chinese father who raises his eldest daughter like the son he never had.  The daughter then gets involved in a relationship with the eldest son of a traditional Irish/Italian family.  Cindy Caponera (Shameless) will write the script and be executive producer along with DreamWorks’ Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and Ling.

An hour-long drama centered on a family dealing with co-dependence and addiction is being developed by HBO in association with writer David Seltzer (Cinema Verite, The Omen and others).  Seltzer will write and serve as EP on the untitled project with Jim Lampley and Michael Price also involved as EPs.

TBS ordered a comedy script centered on a love triangle called Hot for You.  The multi-camera project is about three best friends who are caught in a love triangle and have also opened a rebel foodie restaurant.  Rob Long (Cheers) is on board to pen the script and serve as EP; married writing duo Rick Marin and Ilene Rosenzweig are also involved as writers and co-EPs.

Soon after their show was canceled, the team behind MTV’s The Buried Life  Duncan Penn, Jonnie Penn, Ben Nemtin and Dave Lingwood signed a development deal with MTV’s cross-platform media group MTVX, reports EW.  The foursome will work with MTVX on new shows and online projects. The team indicated they want to work on new projects involving the bucket list theme behind The Buried Life.

Recent finalist on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and star of Disney Channel’s Jonas, Chelsea Kane was tapped by ABC Family to star as Penny in the network’s new half-hour comedy pilot Baby Daddy.  Derek Theler (90210) and Cameron Deane Stewart (Justice for Natalie Holloway) have already been cast.  The multi-camera comedy from executive producer Dan Berendsen (The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and more) is about Ben (Stewart) a 20-something who becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl who is left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend.  Ben chooses to raise the baby with help from his mother, his brother Danny (Theler), his best buddy and his close female friend, Penny (Kane) who has a secret crush on him.  Filming of Baby Daddy in front of a live audience is set for this December in Los Angeles. Kane will also appear in the upcoming ABC Family movie musical Elixir (wt).

Season two of USA Network’s Fairly Legal added Ryan Johnson as a series regular playing Ben Grogan, an intelligent, up-and-coming trial lawyer who knows how to make money.  Johnson’s character is not concerned with the rights and wrongs of a situation as long as he can gain financially.  Production on the second season is currently in the works.
