DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications are considering launching Aereo-like services, reports Bloomberg. If Aereo isn’t shut down by broadcaster lawsuits for capturing their signals and charging subscribers a low monthly fee, cable companies might jump in the game too, says Bloomberg, to avoid paying billions of dollars in retransmission fees.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Millennial news/pop culture net Fusion launches tonight with a bang: an interview with President Obama. The President’s talk with Fusion/ABC News correspondent Jim Avila will take place this afternoon at the White House, and air first on Fusion show America at 7p. Fusion is a joint venture between Univision and Disney/ABC Television.

Comcast started a trial offer for a package that offers a basic TV lineup, Internet, video on demand and HBO, for about $40. The package is available only to new customers, and the price will increase after the first year. With 40 percent of subscribers likely to consider canceling pay-TV service, according to a recent study cited by CNET, the opportunity to get HBO on the cheap could persuade those viewers to reconsider making the cut.

Fox picked up nine more episodes of Dads, for a full 22-ep order. Though the comedy drew criticism at first for offensive humor, it’s averaging a 2.2/7 rating in A18-49 in Live + 7, and is one of the top 10 new series among Men 18-34. The 20th Century Fox production airs Tuesdays at 8p.

The Big Bang Theory has released a song on iTunes. “If I Didn’t Have You (Bernadette’s Song)”, performed by Simon Helberg (Howard) on the October 24 ep with backup vocals from the rest of the cast of the CBS comedy, was written by recurring star Kate Micucci (Lucy) and can be downloaded in recognition of the show’s support of MusiCares, a safety net for people in the music business.

MTV is amping up fan investment in the EMAs. Miley Cyrus, who was voted Best U.S. Act for the 2013 MTV EMA, moves on to compete against Canada’s Justin Bieber for the North America title. The net’s global music celebration, sponsored Stateside by 5 Gum, LG Mobile, Herbal Essences, Taco Bell and T-Mobile, airs Sunday, November 10 at 7p.

Discovery Channel will simulcast Science Channel‘s The Challenger Disaster, reports Deadline. The 90-minute movie, Science’s first scripted program, stars William Hurt as one of the scientists assigned to investigate the tragic 1986 space shuttle explosion. The viewership-boosting strategy follows the announcement last month that Lifetime, A&E and History will simulcast two-night mini-series Bonnie & Clyde in December. Challenger airs Saturday, November 16 at 9p.

MTV released all 12 episodes of high school docu-drama Wait ‘Til Next Year via the MTV app, allowing viewers to binge-watch the whole season a week before its TV premiere on Friday, November 1 at 8p. The move drives usage of the app, and gets the teen audience engaged – hopefully enough to splash chat about the show all over social media.

The New York Television Festival announced the winners of its Independent Pilot Competition on Saturday, as well as the winners of 20 development deals from network, studio and digital partners including A&E, BET, CW Seed, MTV and Sundance Channel. The total number of development deals offered this year was 31, up from 26 last year. For details: http://www.nytvf.com/.

…Speaking of up and comers, the New York campus of the global Dwight Schools launched its first annual Film & TV Industry Professional Week. Winners of both Emmys and MacArthur grants spoke to students last week about considering media careers. Of note was digital cinematographer Anthony S. Lenzo, owner of Air Sea Land Productions. A five-time Emmy Award winner, Lenzo wowed the kids with tales of working with an underwater turbine on an offshore oil platform while on a Discovery Channel shoot. The school will continue the program next year.

Cat Greenleaf, host of USA Network‘s 11a-3p daytime lineup, sat down last week with Orlando Bloom for her 450th interview. But Greenleaf’s bulldog Gracie, who appears in her interviews, has been more impressed with other guests. “Gracie has a thing for wise men of a certain age,” Greenleaf tells Cynopsis. “She first let her love show for Larry King, really ramped it up for Deepak Chopra, and could barely contain herself around William Shatner. I can’t say I blame her  those guys are sexy.”

Leveraging Social Media to Drive Tune-In and Ratings

One of the hottest topics in media today is the effect of social media on television ratings. Nielsen released research this summer that said the volume of tweets affects live TV ratings 29% of the time – and that number is only expected to rise.

~ RATINGS ~

Everyone was a winner Friday night. NBC was number one in A18-49, thanks to the third season premiere of Grimm scoring a 1.8 rating/6 share at 9p, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers, and the series premiere of Dracula at 10p drawing 1.6/6 in the demo. ABC‘s Shark Tank was the top show in A18-49 (2.0/7), and CBS‘s Blue Bloods, with 11 million viewers, was the most-watched show.

The first two games of the World Series averaged 13.9 million viewers for Fox, up 13 percent from last year’s San Francisco Giants/Detroit Tigers matchup. Twitter activity was up from 2012, too – by 63 percent, with 452,000 tweets. But while the Cardinals took the game, the Red Sox won the battle on Facebook, drawing 58 percent of comments, likes and posts.

Bravo scored its most-watched Wednesday of the year in primetime and total day on October 23 with a big assist from the finale of Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles. Delivering 1.7 million total viewers and 793,000 in the 18-49 demo, Listing hit a franchise high.

Oxygen had its best primetime Wednesday ever, thanks to Preachers of L.A., which drew 1.2 million total viewers and 634,000 in A18-49. During the 10p hour, Oxygen was the number five cable net among W18-49.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: FOX grabbed the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 3.6/11, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS won the 8p hour with a 4.0/12 average for The Big Bang Theory and The Millers, with Fox batting a 2.7/9 for the start of Game 2 of the World Series. The Fox sports event stole the 9p hour with 3.7/11, versus 2.8/8 for ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and slid into home at 10p with a 4.3/12, while ABC’s Scandal pulled into second place with 2.9/8.
