Cynopsis: Kids!

10/27/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 27, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This weekend marked the release of Disney‘s new movie High School Musical 3: Senior Year (HSM 3), and you won’t be shocked to learn that the movie landed at the top of the box office receipts domestically with $42 million.  Based on Disney Channel’s original High School Musical TV movies, the HSM 3 feature film becomes the biggest debut ever for a movie musical, easily beating out the previous record holder Mamma Mia (July 18, 2008) that bowed with $27.8 million, according Box Office Mojo.  Also, HSM 3 is now the biggest open for a live-action G rated movie, surpassing the release of Disney’s Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (February 1, 2008), which debuted with $31.1 million.  Additionally, HSM 3 is the second largest October weekend opening for a kids movie behind Shark Tale (PG, October 1, 2004) at $47.6 million, and for the 2008 so far, the movie is the third biggest G-rated movie, behind Wall-E (June 27, 2008) with $63.1 million and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! (March 14, 2008), which opened with $45.0 million.  Internationally, HSM 3 earned $40 million across the 22 markets where it also opened this weekend, per Variety.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Actor Sir Roger Moore joins the voice cast of the English-language animated movie Gnome & Troll  The Forest Trial (2009), from Swedish film company White Shark.  Moore takes on the role of King Leif, while Peter Stormare, who was originally to play the King, will lend his voice to Ogar Mini.  Pre-sold to 65 countries, Gnome & Troll  The Forest Trial is a sequel to White Shark’s Gnome & Troll  The Secret Chamber (2008), which was acquired in some 74 countries.

Twentieth Century Fox moves around dates of a number of its movies and reveals information about the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie sequel.  Officially titled Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, the second movie will open in theaters Christmas Day 2009, per Variety.  Fox has also moved the release of the movie adaptation of the TV series The A-Team from June 12, 2009 to June 11, 2010.  Additionally, according to the report the kid/family movie Tooth Fairy shifts to a Thanksgiving 2009 release from its originally slated June 2009 date, while the movies I Love You Beth Cooper, directed by Chris Columbus, and They Came From Upstairs (a comedy) move from winter 2009, to July 10 and July 31 respectively, and another Columbus directed movie, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, based on Rick Riordan’s books, to July 2, 2010 from 2009.  Fox has also set the movie Ramona, a version of Beverly Cleary’s kid book series of the same name, for release on March 19, 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A good weekend for Harry Potter fans, as the new trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has shown up online.  I was initially led to the trailer via www.the-leaky-cauldron.org , which in turn took me to www.traileraddict.com, and now a little while later, and the trailer is now pretty much all over the place.  Now, what is curious here is whether or not the trailer was supposed to be released just yet or not, because, the end of the trailer says … “This Year” … and Warner Bros. announced this August that The Half-Blood Prince would be released on July 19, 2009, from its original release date of November 21, 2008, as in next year.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Break out the dental floss.  NBC looks to entice family viewing for its new Friday primetime adventure series, Crusoe, by teaming with ConAgra Foods for a promotion featuring its Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn.  The promotion includes ten-second promos, produced by NBC, airing right before and after Crusoe, which are designed to get families to pop some corn and eat it while watching the show together.  The promotion is part of a year-long partnership between NBC and Orville Redenbacher’s aimed at creating a social NBC TV co-viewing experience.  Orville Redenbacher’s campaign launched ahead of the Crusoe debut with ads both online and in weekly publications co-promoting Orville and Crusoe.  Moving forward, the NBC/Orville promotion will include co-viewing of a range of NBC’s family-targeted primetime programming and, of course, doing it while eating popcorn.

Activision Publishing releases Transformers Animated: The Game for Nintendo DS.  Developed under a license from Hasbro, the game based on the animated series, which airs on Cartoon Network.  In the US the games carries an ESRB rating of 10+, while in Europe it carries a PEGI (Pan-European Game Information) ratings of 7+.

Some more information about the line-up for the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Thursday, November 27.  Disney‘s new 3D animated movie Bolt and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story will be featured in the parade.  The new Bolt float will feature Miley Cyrus singing I Thought I Lost You, a song from the movie, along with characters from the movie.  Buzz Lightyear debuts in the annual parade as a giant helium balloon (67 feet long, 39 feet wide and 34 feet tall).  Bolt is slated for release on November 21.  The 3D versions of Toy Story is set for release October 2, 2009, followed by Toy Story 2 on February 12, 2010, and finally the new movie, Toy Story 3, on June 18, 2010.
