Chloe Sevigny headlines the new original drama series Hit and Miss, created by Paul Abbott for Sky Atlantic in the UK, and it will air in the US on DIRECTV. Becoming the exclusive US broadcaster for Hit and Miss, DIRECTV will debut the series next year. The series is the first original series commissioned by UK’s Sky Atlantic and it is a co-production of AbbottVision and Red Production Company.
Digital classic television network, Me-TV from Weigel Broadcasting Co. and distributed by MGM, launches today on WCIV-TV’s digital channel in the Charleston, SC market. Me-TV, offering a variety of classic TV programs such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Bob Newhart Show and M*A*S*H among others now boasts clearances in more than 60% of the US.
Expanding his present relationship with the network, late night host Jimmy Fallon sold three comedy scripts to NBC from his company Holiday Road via Universal Television. Fallon will executive produce the series with Amy Ozols, writer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The writers of all three projects hail from Fallon’s own show or his former show, NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
- One project is Fat Rob, about a former rap star who is balancing being famous and being a good father. Jeremy Bronson is on board with this project.
- DILFs is about 30-something dads coping with not being grown up enough to parent. Charlie Grandy (The Office) is behind this project.
- Rick is the third concept about a loveable doofus who is a stepdad to a guy the same age as him. Gerard Bradford is working on this script.
On NBC’s established comedy The Office, character Nellie Bertram returns to Dunder Miflin when Catherine Tate rejoins the cast. Tate will reprise her role in the latter half of the current season after she’s hired by friend and Chairman Jo Bennett (Kathy Bates).
Marvel’s comic book character The Punisher may come to FOX as the network is developing a series, giving the project a pilot commitment with penalty. The procedural drama would focus on NYC detective Frank Castle, who seeks justice as a merciless vigilante named The Punisher. Ed Bernero (Third Watch, Criminal Minds) is behind the project and he’s also developing a sci-fi western, The Eye for ABC. The Punisher has previously been adapted into two different feature films and each achieved lackluster results at the box office.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette are on a roll selling the untitled Rob Sheridan project to ABC. The single-camera comedy project is about a former overweight girl who becomes skinny and must juggle working with her ex in a diner that serves people who love to eat. Cox and Arquette will serve as executive producers along with Sheridan; ABC Studios is producing. Cox and Arquette recently sold another single-camera comedy, Ten Years to NBC under a penalty commitment agreement and the duo also has a game show pilot, Identity Crisis in the works at CBS.
Iron Man’s Jon Favreau sold a single-camera project titled Tweaked to CBS with the plot centering on the lives and dating activity among single parents in Santa Monica. CBS Television Studios is producing and Favreau will write and be the EP.
Frosh drama A Gifted Man on CBS tapped ER alum Eriq La Salle for a multi-episode arc playing Evan “E-Mo” Morris, a highly experienced neuropsychiatrist and medical detective who Dr. Michael Holt (Patrick Wilson) seeks out for professional and personal reasons.
Former CBS The Talk co-host Leah Remini has another sitcom on the horizon as she inked a talent deal with ABC to star in and produce a comedy series for next season. For nine seasons, Remini starred opposite Kevin James in CBS’ The King of Queens.
ABC okays two more projects in development, per THR:
- The Stewarts is a multigenerational one-hour project from writer-producer Dahvi Waller (Mad Men) about an influential family and the staff that supports them. Warner Bros. Television is producing; Waller will pen and be an executive producer.
- From Judging Amy writer, Barbara Hall, ABC approved an untitled project described as a romantic comedy about a smart woman who explores the question of smart versus pretty. ABC Studios and Brillstein Entertainment Partners are producing with Hall on board as writer and EP along with Brillstein’s JoAnn Alfano.
HBO adds another new project to showrunner Alan Ball’s plate, per THR. Ball is developing the one-hour drama Wichita, about a Kansas surgeon who unknowingly becomes the center of a modern-day political, cultural and ethical war. Ball is on board to executive produce Wichita with writer Devin Friedman, who wrote the 2010 GQ article, “Savior vs. Savior” about the late Dr. George Tiller, a Wichita, KS doctor who provided late-term abortions and was murdered in 2009. Jimmy Miller is also set to be an executive producer and Friedman will write the project and be listed as co-executive producer.
In more HBO news, the premium network is working with Tom Hanks again, this time on a half-hour comedy about college athletes titled Players, reports THR. Hanks is developing Players with Gary Goetzman, his longtime producing partner and Playtone co-founder and both will serve as EPs on the project. Hanks and Goetzman in the past have had three successful miniseries at HBO: Band of Brothers, John Adams and The Pacific as well as the drama series, Big Love.
Josh Berman will soon wear two hats at Lifetime as the creator of the network’s Drop Dead Diva series is developing a half-hour comedy called Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office, per THR. The project is based on the book by Dr. Lois P. Frankel, the president of Corporate Coaching International. Berman would be involved as a non-writing EP. Sony Pictures Television, also producer of Diva, is behind this new comedy.
Also at Lifetime, the network hired several more actors for the sixth season of Army Wives, according to TVLine. Last week, news broke Susan Lucci was added to the sixth season cast for at least two eps, reuniting with her former All My Children cast mate Kim Delaney. Kelli Williams was also added for at least seven eps playing Jackie Clarke, the ambitious spouse of a general. Over the weekend, Kellie Martin (ER), Robert John Burke (Rescue Me) and Ryan Michelle Bathe (Boston Legal) will also be joining in recurring roles. Martin will play Nicole, a member of the military police; Bathe is the head of the Youth Center; and Burke will portray an uber-competitive general in at least seven eps who is also Jackie Clarke’s (Kelli Williams) husband. The sixth season of Army Wives will return to Lifetime’s schedule next spring.
