ABC’s medical drama, Private Practice from Shonda Rhimes will end after this current sixth season of 13 episodes. ABC also opted to not pick up the series’ back-nine episodes. The drama, starring Kate Walsh was renewed in May after the network had moved the series from its post Grey’s Anatomy slot on Thursdays to Tuesdays to make room for Rhimes’ Washington, DC-set drama Scandal. Private Practice continues to air on Tuesdays at 10p and is averaging a 1.6 rating among A18-49 this season which is down from its fifth season average of 2.3 in the demo.
Four other returning series on ABC received additional episode orders. Two more episodes were added to Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and The Middle and one extra episode was given to Castle. With these orders, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and The Middle are now at 24 episodes each this season and Castle is at 23 episodes. Furthermore, ABC gave two additional scripts for new dramas 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort.
New comedy The Mindy Project, created by star Mindy Kaling, received an expanded season from FOX. The network ordered two additional episodes of the sitcom that brings the first season episode number to 24.
On Sunday, Cablevision and AMC Networks revealed they have settled their legal dispute with Dish Networks over Voom HD, an indirect subsidiary of AMC Networks. The companies also agreed on a long-term agreement for Dish to carry the AMC Networks including AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv. AMC’s cable networks have been blacked out on Dish systems since July as a result of a contract disagreement. In addition, Dish will pay a settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC Networks, $80 million of which will go for the purchase of Cablevision’s multichannel video and distribution licenses in 45 US metropolitan areas.
