~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Reality producer, radio personality and FOX’s American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest is talking with talent agency CAA and entertainment company AEG about the possibility of jointly launching a new cable network. The proposed channel would focus on music, pop culture and lifestyle and is in very early development stages. Seacrest would serve as a partner in the enterprise and not as the face of the network though it would have its own brand. AEG would bring its global concert and live venue ties to the programming table while Seacrest would offer his own entertainment industry contacts and experience as a reality show producer. All three partners in the enterprise are in talks with various companies regarding distribution. Reports about the venture say Seacrest would continue his work on E! and the new channel would not be a competitor to E! Comcast, parent company of E! is not involved in the endeavor and to date has not mentioned any plans to carry the possible new channel.

ABC opted to move its new drama series Body of Proof headlined by Dana Delany into midseason. Originally, ABC had scheduled Body of Proof from ABC Studios to air in the 9p time slot on Fridays.

NBC is continuing its “Run for the Roses” partnership with the Kentucky Derby horse race for five more years. The new deal with Churchill Downs also includes the Kentucky Oaks and day-of-Derby racing. NBC has been broadcasting the Kentucky Derby since 2001 and last year’s race attracted 16.5 million total viewers making it the most-watched Derby in 21 years.

ABC Family gave a back-order of additional episodes to its comedy series Melissa & Joey, which takes the first season to 30 total episodes. Melissa & Joey airs Tuesdays at 8p.

USA Network is looking ahead and will debut the new series Fairly Legal (fka Facing Kate) on January 20 at 10p preceded by the sophomore season premiere of Royal Pains at 9p. Also on January 18, USA Network will bring back new episodes of White Collar at 10p. Fairly Legal stars Sarah Shahi as Kate Reed, a top litigator who leaves her law career to become a mediator. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

truTV approved a third season of its original series All Worked Up and additionally okayed a spin-off series called Lizard Lick Towing. All Worked Up, the series that follows ordinary working people who must endure insults, yelling and more as part of their job, received a 13-episode order. truTV ordered six episodes of Lizard Lick Towing about a repossessing and towing company based in North Carolina which was prominently featured in the first season of All Worked Up. Both series, produced by Zodiak USA, will bow in early 2011.

Beginning tonight at 9p, Sundance Channel is airing its first scripted original series, Carlos starring Edgar Ramirez in the title role. The miniseries is airing over three consecutive nights October 11-13 at 9p, and is considered the definitive profile of the terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal, the mastermind behind terrorist attacks in Europe and the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s. Following the premiere on Sundance Channel, IFC Films is releasing the film theatrically this Friday in New York City.

Universal Sports is airing its first-ever Adventure Week chock full of adventure sports programming beginning tonight at 8p and running for six hours each night in primetime through this Sunday. The Adventure Week programming will include competitions and documentaries showcasing such sports as cliff diving, kayaking, mountain climbing and adventure racing, taking viewers to exotic destinations around the world. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

After nearly forty years as a PBS affiliate, KCET/Los Angeles declared on Friday it will become an independent station and will not broadcast traditional PBS programming such as Sesame Street, PBS Newshour, Masterpiece and Nova after this year. KCET claims at a time when viewer pledges and sponsorships have declined, PBS would not lower the $7 million per year affiliation fee. KCET also pointed out Southern California is one of the few market areas where public TV stations overlap their signals. PBS only found out on Friday that KCET is dropping their affiliation and PBS’ spokesperson said KCET repeatedly has asked in the last few years to “be allowed to operate as a PBS member station without abiding by PBS policies and paying the corresponding dues.” KCET further says it will now produce and distribute its own content across all media platforms. KCET also says it will “remain a non-profit, viewer-supported public media organization, operating under a non-commercial, educational television broadcast license awarded to Community Television of South California as an independent public television station.”

Globo TV International made a programming agreement with Chello Zone to broadcast on CCTV the national TV network in the People’s Republic of China. The deal involves the series Woman and the series Seven Women, both set in South America. Both series will air on drama channel CCTV-8, as part of the Everyday Jiayi daily primetime programming block. CCTV-8 reaches more than 200 million households in this region and the programming block highlights international dramas and is owned by Encore International Inc., a subsidiary of Chello Zone.

Last Friday, Scripps Networks International launched the new hi-def channel, Food Network Asia in the Philippines via Direct-to-Home satellite service Cignal Digital TV. The 24/7 English-language channel will feature a combination of US Food Network series as well as locally-produced, original content.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC Family approved four new pilots:

  • Untitled Brenda Hampton Project – A one-hour scripted drama executive produced by Brenda Hampton (The Secret Life of the American Teenager, 7th Heaven) focuses on the lives and families of four ethnically-diverse teenage girls at a private school in California. Casting is TBA.
  • The Great State of Georgia – Half-hour multi-camera comedy series about an enthusiastic plus-sized performer hailing from the south and her science geek best friend as they try to make it in New York City. Jennifer Weiner and Jeff Greenstein are writing the pilot that is produced by ABC Studios. Casting is TBA.
  • What Would Jane Do – One-hour scripted drama about 16-year old Jane who gets a job at a chic retail company when they mistake her for an adult. Jane soon finds herself juggling life as a high school teenager and as an assistant to a high-profile executive in the fashion industry while keeping her true identity a secret. Gavin Polone is executive producer and April Blair is penning the pilot.
  • The Lying Game – One-hour scripted drama about Emma, a sweet foster kid who is always down on her luck. Emma finds out she has an identical twin sister named Sutton, who was adopted by a wealthy family. Sutton convinces Emma to trade places, then Sutton turns up missing and Emma must decide if she should reveal all. Charles Pratt, Jr. is executive producer and writer; Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo are also executive producing. Alloy Entertainment is producing in association with Warner Horizon Television and the series is based on the forthcoming novel by Sara Shepard (author of Pretty Little Liars). Casting is TBA.

ABC News moved Dan Harris into the co-anchor position of the weekend edition of Good Morning America. Harris will co-anchor along with Bianna Golodryga and news anchor Ron Clairborne. Harris began his new position this past Saturday. Harris will continue to contribute to various broadcasts and platforms as a correspondent and will also anchor World News Sunday until a replacement has been found.

Kathryn Erbe is back on USA Network’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent for the series’ tenth and final season. Erbe portrayed Detective Alexandra Eames for eight seasons and will be joining her on-air partner Vincent D’Onofrio who also announced his return to the series for its tenth season. USA Network will debut eight new episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2011. Universal Cable Productions produces the series.

Lisa Oz, wife of Dr. Oz is involved in a daytime talk show pilot with Sony Pictures Television. The new show will likely concentrate on helping rocky relationships. Lisa Oz is author of the book, US: Transforming Ourselves and the Relationships That Matter Most. She has also co-hosted the XM radio show version of The Dr. Oz Show with her husband. Scott Stone and Corin Nelson will serve as executive producers on the project. Production on the pilot is taking place in November and if stations pick up the show, Sony is expected to it in fall 2011.

ABC is working on a single-camera family comedy titled Suburgatory about a teenage girl who moves from the big city to her version of hell, the suburbs, cites THR. Emily Kapnek (Hung, Parks & Recreation) is writing and executive producing with Warner Bros. Television producing.

NBC picked up a show project titled ECHELON from writer Michael Gordon (300) and Imagine Entertainment that was inspired by the controversial US electronic eavesdropping equipment called ECHELON, a program that supposedly captures all data signals for analysis at a central location in West Virginia, per THR. The show will be about a fictional unit called G.H.O.S.T. (Global Hierarchical Observation Strategy Taskforce) whose job it is to investigate paranormal data. Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo will executive produce along with Gordon.

Casting Call: World of Wonder Productions is casting for a new docu-series for a major cable network and is looking for a modern, alternative family. The family could be a real-life “Will & Grace” with a baby; a transgender with twins; a woman who is carrying her sister’s baby; and or a mother carrying her daughter’s child. The family composition may be considered odd but the love is real in your uniquely blended family. If this describes your situation or someone you know, casting would love to hear from you. Send an email toweingradcasting @gmail.com and include a description of your family composition and what makes it work. Include names, where you live, how you live and tell us why your story is unique. Also include recent photos and a phone number where you can be reached.
