Yesterday, the negotiating committees from Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and AFTRA forged a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on a new, three-year contract, though it is pending approval by both guild’s joint boards and members. This new contract goes through June 30, 2014 and the old contract was not set to expire until June 30, 2011. Terms of the new agreement include giving actors in broadcast and cable scripted television shows and films a +6% pay increase, a larger contribution of +10% to their health and pension plans, expanded coverage of new media work and other provisions.
On Friday, MSNBC suspended Keith Olbermann, host of the nightly Countdown program, indefinitely without pay. NBC News, parent of MSNBC, cited Olbermann had made three political contributions to Democratic candidates toward the end of October violating an NBC policy. To date, there is no word from NBC when Olbermann will be reinstated on-air at MSNBC though the network has said Olbermann would not be fired for his actions. In the meantime, MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts will host Countdown.
With mid-term elections past, you may be interested in the following details that lead up to Election Day, per Nielsen:
- American TV viewers saw nearly 1.48 million political ads this October, a figure up from 1.41 million political ads in October 2008, during the last major election period.
- Cleveland TV viewers saw the most political ads at 23.4% during October. Other top five markets where the most political TV ads aired include Columbus, Portland, Sacramento and Seattle. Viewers in Jackson, MS were exposed to the lowest number of political TV ads in October at only 1.0%.
- On average and looking at data over the last five calendar years (2005-2009), October is the most popular month for political and issue-related ads than any other month of the year.
Jill Clayburgh, 66, an actress known for playing strong, feminist-type roles, died on Friday at her home in Lakeville, CT. Ms. Clayburgh was nominated for two Academy Awards for her starring turns in the 1978 film An Unmarried Woman and also for Starting Over in 1979. Other film credits for Ms. Clayburgh include Semi-Tough (1977), It’s My Turn (1980), First Monday in October (1981) and I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can (1982). Though considered more of a film actress, Ms. Clayburgh appeared on Broadway in the late 1960s through the early 1970s and again in a 1984 revival of Noel Coward’s Design for Living and more recently in 2006 in a revival of Barefoot in the Park. Ms. Clayburgh also appeared in many television series includes guest roles on Law & Order, The Practice and Nip/Tuck and a recurring role as Ally’s mother on Ally McBeal in addition to a regular role on the more recent ABC series Dirty Sexy Money from 2007 to 2009. She is survived by her husband, playwright, David Rabe; a daughter, Lily Rabe; a son Michael, a stepson Jason and one brother.
TV writer/producer, Arthur Bernard Lewis, 84, died October 30 in Los Angeles. During his career commencing in 1962, Mr. Lewis worked as a producer on such television series as The Doctors and the Nurses then moved on to write for popular shows including The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Baretta, Hawaii Five-O and In the Heat of the Night. Later in 1978, Mr. Lewis joined the production team for the CBS hit series Dallas and became executive story editor for 69 episodes. From 1981-1985 he was supervising producer on 113 segments of Dallas and solo writer on 63 episodes of the drama, most of which he additionally produced. Furthermore, Mr. Lewis worked on the famous Dallas episode “Who Shot J.R.?” that aired on November 21, 1980 and tallied a staggering 83 million viewers, making it the highest-rated TV episode in history at the time. Mr. Lewis also wrote the made-for-TV movies, Dallas: J.R. Returns (1996) and Dallas: War of the Ewings (1998). Last Friday, in the midst of negotiations between AT&T U-verse and Scripps Networks, AT&T opted to pull Scripps’ owned networks – HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel and Great American Country off the air, affecting 2.7 million customers. On Friday morning, Scripps Networks had offered a third contract extension until the end of the year while the two parties worked through their impasse. John Lansing, President, Scripps Networks said the stalemate was not about money, saying, “We reached an agreement in principle with AT&T U-verse on the distribution fees we would receive for these networks well in advance of last month’s contract deadline.” The issues at hand in the negotiations involved AT&T’s desire to use Scripps Networks’ video in other than normal business areas. “AT&T U-verse demanded unreasonably broad video rights for emerging media where business models have not even been established,” Lansing said. “Accepting their demands would have restrained our ability to deliver our content to our viewers in new and innovative ways.” Lansing emphasized if AT&T U-verse returned to the negotiation table, Scripps would be happy to continue negotiations in good faith with the result of its networks being restored to AT&T U-verse subscribers.

A film version of the 1960s gothic daytime soap opera Dark Shadows is being resurrected starring Johnny Depp. It won’t surprise you to learn head up the production team will be Tim Burton, and Depp will play lead character, Barnabas Collins, a vampire who lives in a spooky Maine mansion and is looking for his lost love. Dark Shadows will begin filming in April. The original Dark Shadows television series ran on ABC weekdays from 1966-1971 and a revival primetime Dark Shadows series ran for one season on NBC in 1991.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: We’re expecting you, making another run and come aboard were all Lyrics to the song of what TV show? THE LOVE BOAT! But you knew that … YOU ALL KNEW THAT. I do believe I received more correct answers on this question than the Seinfeld question last week, and that’s a first. So Kudos to you all … except those of you who said Three’s Company. No kudos for you.
Today’s Trivia Question: Who am I? Like so many TV characters who “fight crime”, I have a dark side. Easy to blame my unusual childhood, or that my day job actually enables my late night “work”. My sister and her colleagues have come close to finding out my secrets, but so far no mistakes. Who am I? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
