CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

11/08/04

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 8, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

As has been the tradition thus far this season, CBS kicked off the first night of the November sweep with a decisive win, scoring an 8.6/22 A18-49 rating over NBC’s 7.1/18 according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research on Thursday night.  At 8pm Survivor’s 7.6/20 was well ahead of NBC’s Joey (5.2/14) and Will & Grace (5.2/13) as well as Fox’s The O.C. premiere (3.8/10).  At 9pm CSI dominated the field with a 10.8/26, pushing The Apprentice 7.8/19 into second place. North Shore on Fox drew a 2.1/5, dropping 50% of its lead-in audience.  NBC held tough at 10p with ER’s 8.3/21, though Without a Trace has certainly closed the gap with a 7.2/19. Primetime Live posted a 2.4/6.

According to fast national ratings from Nielsen Media Research for Friday night, NBC led with a 3.1/10 A18-49, ahead of ABC 2.6/8, CBS 2.0/6, Fox 1.8/6, WB 1.5/5 and UPN 1.1/3.  At 8pm NBC’s Dateline scored a time period high of 2.4/8, with CBS and ABC tied at a 7 share. Third Watch at 9pm for NBC also won its time period with a 3.4/10, building on its lead-in by two share points. ABC’s 9-10 comedy block was #2 with a 2.5/7, immediately followed by CBS and Fox tied at a 6 share. And finishing off the night at 10pm was another win for NBC for its freshman drama series Medical Investigation tallying up a 3.5/11, the highest rated hour of the night. ABC’s 20/20 drew a 3.0/9.

Fox won the night on Saturday with their long term lineup of Cops, Cops and America’s Most Wanted, posting a 2.9/9 A18-49 rating according to fast national ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC delivered a 2.2/7, followed by ABC 2.1/7 and CBS 1.7/5. At 8pm the pair of Cops on Fox earned a 2.6/9, well ahead of both NBC and ABC, each earning a 6 share. At 9pm Fox held tough, again posting a 9 share, which each of the Big 3 behind by 33% with a 6 share. At 10p, ABC and NBC tied with an 8 share, CBS close behind with a 7.

UPN has given full season commitment to two of its newest drama series – Kevin Hill and Veronica Mars.  Both targeting the slightly young A18-34 crowd, and both season to date have averaged a 1.7/5.  Kevin Hill airs following America’s Next Top Model on Wednesday nights; Veronica Mars on Tues at 9p.

Tonight’s Premieres:
NBC:  $25 Million Dollar Hoax at 10p

Casting / Development / Production:

  • MTV has ordered up 8 episodes of Wild ‘n Out, an improv comedy project featuring two teams of competing comedic actors, from Power Entertainment. Nick Cannon is signed to head up one team, while a revolving door of guest celebs will captain the other team, per Variety.
  • Fox‘s new midseason comedy series Related By Family has been retitled – now known as Life on a Stick (Paramount Television). Originally this show was set to air on Wednesdays at 830p beginning in January, but time will tell where the network needs the lift of a new series.
  • Earlier this year, HBO had ordered 5 episodes of a project from Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney – that project now has a name:  Unscripted. It’s about three struggling actors trying to make it in Hollywood. The show stars Krista Allen, Bryan Greenberg and Jennifer Hall as our strugglers, and Frank Langella as one of their acting coaches.  Debut is scheduled for January 9.

History Channel debuts a new series on November 10 at 9pm called Full Throttle.  The series, hosted by Marc and Eric Kozeluh, combines renovation and competition that brings popular cars of the past straight into the present and future.

Bravo has ordered up another season of its reality show Blow Out set in the Beverly Hills salon of Jonathan Antin (Reveille in assoc with Magna Global Ent/Shapiro Grodner Prods).  Season No. 2, scheduled to air next year, continues on the same path as No. 1, as Jonathan looks to expand his business to include a line of hair products.

As HBO prepares to launch the fifth season of its drama series Six Feet Under, the news comes this will also be the show’s final season. Just as production is scheduled to start on a new set of 12 episodes, its producer Alan Ball says he sees the show as reaching its creative end.  No start date has been set yet for Season #5.

Miramax Films and Cablevision’s satellite service Voom HD have come to terms on a deal that includes 193 films over three years. Included in the package are a couple baker dozens of foreign titles, including Amelie and Farewell My Concubine, as well as more than a third of the titles being martial arts titles – i.e., Bruce Lee’s The Way of the Dragon.

TNT’s newest Spotlight Presentation film project with Johnson & Johnson is called 14 Hours and will star JoBeth Williams and Rick Schroeder. Set in a Texas hospital, doctors and nurses at the hospital have much to do to protect their patients and the weather wreaks havoc outside. The film is produced by Cosmic Ent, Magna Global and Paramount Network Television.

The only other time David Letterman showed up on the set of Regis Philbin‘s morning show, Kathie Lee Gifford was in the co-host seat (1997), and Dave walked on with a canned ham and gave it to a gentleman in the front row.  What Dave didn’t know is the gentleman, from a very small rural town in Illinois, had no idea who David Letterman was.  But he was happy for the ham nonetheless. Today Letterman will make another appearance on Regis – this time with Kelly Ripa, perhaps sans ham, and presumably everyone will know who he is.

While Howard Keel is probably best known to audiences today as as Clayton Farlow, Mr. “Miss Ellie Ewing” on CBS’ Dallas, he was once known for his musical comedy films including Kiss Me Kate, Annie Get Your Gun and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and on Broadway in Rogers & Hammerstein’s Carousel.  Howard Keel died at the age of 85 at him home in Palm Springs.
