Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe was suspended last Friday from MSNBC after informing management he had made eight political contributions between 2004 and 2008. Since he had not asked for approval before making these contributions, which violated a company policy, MSNBC President Phil Griffin suspended Scarborough for two days without pay.  He will return to his Morning Joe post on Wednesday. Two weeks ago, MSNBC originally indefinitely suspended Keith Olbermann, host of Countdown for making political donations without approval, then later reduced Obermann’s suspension term to two days.

Syfy renewed two of its original reality series and gave additional episodes to one other series:

  • Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files was renewed for a sophomore season with the new season beginning production early next year. The series, airing on Thursdays at 10p, is co-produced by BASE Productions and Universal Networks International.
  • Ghost Hunters International will return for a third season. Seven remaining episodes in the show’s second season will commence January 5 at 9p traveling to legendary ghost hot spots around the world. Season three will begin production in early 2011. The series is produced in association with Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Films and Television.
  • Hollywood Treasure was granted 12 additional 30m episodes to its current season which debuted in October. During the three weeks since its opening, Hollywood Treasure has averaged 1.2 million total viewers. The series airs with back-to-back episodes on Wednesdays at 10p and is produced by Shevick*Zupon Entertainment.

CMT is picking up The Singing Bee with host Melissa Peterman for a third season. Juma Entertainment produces the show with The Gurin Company.

Time Warner Cable is experimenting with a lower-priced cable package called TV Essentials in the New York City market as well as in northeastern Ohio. The TV Essentials package will include ESPN News, TBS and CNN though does not include ESPN, TNT, Comedy Central, Fox News and MSNBC. Beginning next week, the package will be offered to NYC customers at $39.95/month and by the middle of next month to northeastern Ohio subscribers at $29.95/month. Those current TWC subscribers who have internet and/or phone service along with cable will not be eligible for this reduced-priced package. The intention behind this move is to appeal to those customers who have been hit hard by the recession. It is also a move to retain cable TV customers. SNL Kagan recently reported 741,000 people have dropped their cable TV service in third quarter 2010, the biggest decline in cable subscribers in 30 years.

Nielsen revealed television viewing usage in the US as part of its most recent State of the Media fact sheet. During second quarter 2010, the average person is the US watched more than 143 hours of television each month. Compared to second quarter 2009, this usage rate is virtually flat. Though compared to a year ago, the DVR playback time has increased slightly from 24 hours and 11 minutes in 2Q 2009 to 24 hours and 27 minutes in 2Q 2010.

Veteran television producer William Self, 89, died last Monday in Los Angeles. Mr. Self produced a long list of hit and now considered classic television shows including Daniel Boone, Peyton Place, Batman and M*A*S*H among others and also is credited with making over 20th Century Fox Television into a top-shelf producer of television programming in the 1960s and 1970s. Mr. Self began his career as an actor with small roles in big films including five films with John Wayne and five films with Spencer Tracy. Mr. Self was also known for his skilled tennis game, where he played with leading studio brass and actors on the court including Jack Warner and Charlie Chaplan. The good contacts he made on the tennis court led him to a career as a television producer. He began supervising the anthology series The Schlitz Playhouse of Stars in the early 1950s followed by executive positions at CBS and FOX where he developed or managed numerous hit TV shows including the pilot episode of The Twilight Zone for CBS. In 1959, Mr. Self moved to 20th Century Fox Television where he supervised production on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and in 1964 two of his series, Daniel Boone and Peyton Place hit #1 in the ratings. By 1968, he was promoted to president of 20th Century Fox Television. ABC approached Mr. Self with a request to do a series based on a comic book and he came up with the now cult classic series Batman. Mr. Self also produced the series Julia, the first series starring a black actor, Diahann Carroll. At FOX, Mr. Self produced Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Room 222, 12 O’Clock High, Lost in Space, Nanny and the Professor and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.  After viewing the film version of M*A*S*H, Mr. Self was convinced it could be translated to the small screen. CBS was reluctant though Mr. Self prevailed and the TV version of M*A*S*H debuted in 1972 on CBS, becoming one of most critically-acclaimed and beloved series of all time. Additionally while at CBS, Mr. Self produced close to 50 TV movies and miniseries each year including The Blue and the Gray in 1982 and dramas for the Hallmark Hall of Fame including Sarah, Plain and Tall starring Glenn Close in 1991 and its sequel Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter’s End in 1999. Following his time at CBS, Mr. Self established William Self Productions to produced films and television programs.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC picked up a pilot script about the Civil War set in Virginia from executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Randall Wallace (Secretariat). Cuse and Wallace are co-writing the pilot script for ABC Studios and both will executive produce.

After a bidding war among four networks, Starz was the victor handing an eight-episode order to a one-hour scripted drama project titled Boss starring Kelsey Grammer portraying a powerful mayor of Chicago. Gus Van Sant will direct the pilot and Farhad Safinia wrote the script on spec, working with Grammer on the plot. Lionsgate will produce the project beginning next spring and production will likely take place on location in Chicago. Grammer, Safinia, Stella Stolper and Brian Sher, Grammer’s partner at Grammnet Productions will all serve as executive producer.
