CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

11/22/04

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 22, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

CBS was again the network to must-see on Thursday night, hauling in an 8.7/22 A18-49 rating in final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC was a stalwart #2 with a 7.3/19, followed in the distance by Fox 2.4/6, UPN 1.9/5, ABC 1.8/5, WB .9/3.  At 8pm Survivor on CBS dominated with a 7.6/21 demo rating, well ahead of NBC’s Joey (5.0/14) and Will & Grace (5.5/14). The O.C. on Fox delivered a handsome 3.2/9.  At 9pm CSI won the hour and was the highest rated show of the night in the A18-49 demo with an 11.6/28.  The Apprentice ousted two apprenti and earned a 7.7/18 for its trouble. ER was the steady winner at 10p for NBC with a 9.0/23.  Without a Trace on CBS delivered a 6.8/18.

NBC led the charge on Friday night with a slim 2.9/9 A18-49 rating according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  While CBS led by a tenth of a rating point in the 8-9p hour, the share for CBS, NBC and ABC was tied at 8. Each of the other three networks tied with a 4 share.  During the 9p hour, the ties broke apart with clear leaders – NBC was ahead with a 3.1/10, followed by ABC’s 2.6/8, and CBS with a 2.0/6.  WB’s combo of Reba and Blue Collar was #4 with a 1.7/5. At 10p NBC held its lead with a 3.3/10 for freshman drama Medical Investigation. CBS’s airing of a repeat of CSI Miami earned the Eye a 3.0/9, while 20/20 on ABC came in with a 2.7/8.

Fox, as usual, owned Saturday night, both in Households and in the A18-49 demo, averaging a solid 3.3/11 in the demo according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8pm Fox delivered a 3.1/11 followed with a 3.5/12 for a pair of Cops episodes. The closest competitors were ABC and NBC, each averaging a 5 share. At 9pm, America’s Most Wanted earned a 3.3/10, while ABC and NBC kicked it up to a 6 share. For the 10p hour, the the finale of NBC’s movie Erin Brockovich delivered with a 2.9/9, while the final hour of The Rookie on ABC and 48 Hours on CBS each earned a 7 share.

LAX has officially been grounded by NBC. No big surprise there.  The show began the season on Monday nights at 10p, struggling opposite CSI Miami. It was then moved to Wednesday nights at 8pm where it was body slammed by Lost on ABC. Unable to generate a sizeable loyal audience, the show has been pulled with 3 episodes left in the can.  The next three weeks will feature OTOs in the time period.

Casting / Development / Production

  • Fox has ordered up another season of its newest reality series Nanny 911 (Granada Ent). Newly out of the box, the show has thus far averageda  4.0/10 A18-49 rating.
  • NFL has signed Paul McCartney to be the centerpiece of this year’s Super Bowl half time show (February 6 on Fox).
  • In episode #14 of this seasons Law & Order, the Assistant District Attorney’s office will get a new ADA in Annie Parisse.  Current ADA portrayer Elisabeth Rohm announced last summer she would be leaving the show after the initial 13 eps of the season.
  • WB is checking out Wing Men from Overbrook Entertainment, a guy buddy sitcom from Will Smith’s prod company. On board to write the script is Mike Soccio (King of Queens, Fresh Prince), per Variety.

King World has signed Dr. Phil to three more years taking him through the 2008-09 season.

Howard Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers has reportedly signed a talent deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop a daytime talker, potentially for next season, per Hollywood Reporter.

TNT has picked up the cable broadcast rights to CBS’ Cold Case in a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. The cabler will be able to start stripping the series M-F in 2007, to the tune of $1.4 million/episode, and will begin repurposing the series starting next fall.  WBDCD will also be selling the weekend plays starting in 2007 in syndication.

Syndicated series Eye for an Eye, distributed by Atlas Worldwide and produced by National Lampoon, has been cleared in 70% of the country for next season on a straight barter basis. The show has aired on a weekly basis in a handful of markets for the past year and a half, and with the joining of National Lampoon as producer, has rolled out into a 5-day strip series for next fall.  Set in a small claims court in South Carolina, the judge hands out alternatives to financial awards.  Also, according to Variety, Kato Kaelin is expected to host.

He was also repeatedly nominated for works including Sweet Charity, Little Me, Seesaw, Barnum and The Secret Garden.

1963:  While riding through Dallas, Texas, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is shot and killed by a sniper.  Texas Governor John Connally was also wounded in the attack.  Kennedy was pronounced dead 30 minutes later at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital, and on the same day, Vice President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as the 36th president aboard Air Force One.  Despite an exhaustive investigation, some still believe the man accused of the crime, Lee Harvey Oswald, was a member of a conspiracy.
