Good morning. It’s Monday, November 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Oscar-winning actor Jack Palance died Friday of natural causes at his home in Montecito, CA surrounded by his family. At age 70, after a career of playing evil characters in dramatic films such as Shane and Sudden Fear, Palance won his first Academy Award for the comedy film City Slickers. No one will forget his 1992 Oscar acceptance speech when he dropped to the floor and wowed the audience with one-handed push-ups to show off his physical prowess. According to Associated Press files, he died at age 85, but his family said he was actually 87 years old.

FOX has pulled the series Justice from its November sweeps schedule effective immediately. Ratings for Justice fell off when the network moved it from the 9p Wednesday slot to Monday at 9p following Prison Break. The most recent ratings for Justice brought in a modest 1.9 A18-49, losing nearly 50% of its lead-in. Filling the time period will be repeats of House. It is expected that production of Justice’s 13-episode order will be completed and FOX will return the show to its schedule sometime in December.
ABC has ordered nine more episodes of What About Brian?. Since its launch, Brian has held its lead-in ratings from The Bachelor.
NBC Universal has begun layoffs based on its NBCU 2.0 plan designed to tighten budgets in every department which will increase efficiency company-wide. The broadcast TV side will absorb much of the 700 expected layoffs, with the NBC News division taking the bulk of the hits. In this first round of layoffs, at least 17 employees affiliated with Dateline NBC will lose their jobs. These employees are based in New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Furthermore, an undisclosed number of employees have opted to take a voluntary buyout package from the company. NBC News management will complete these initial layoffs by next week with more reductions coming next year.
Buena Vista Television has secured a robust handful of local station syndication clearances for Grey’s Anatomy set to debut in Fall 2009, including the ABC O&O stations in New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Houston. Other clearances include WFXT/Boston, WTTG Washington, WBS/Atlanta and WXYZ/Detroit, per Hollywood Reporter. The show is being sold on a straight 7/7 barter split, for a three year period. Last summer, BVT sold the cable rights to Lifetime, who will begin by airing season #1 this January, and will be able to strip the series Mon-Fri beginning in 2009.
While A&E has just concluded its fourth season of its original series The First 48, the network has decided to extend the series by adding six bonus episodes. The new episodes will air each Thursday at 9p starting this week. Compared to season three, The First 48 increased its A18-49 viewers by 37% or 744,000 viewers; A18-34 viewers have increased by 38% or 333,000; and A25-54 viewers have grown by 32% or 733,000. Season five of the series will debut next January.
Oxygen will add two series to its schedule starting next month:
- The Bad Girls Club – premieres December 5 at 10p with a one-hour special. Following will be 22 half-hour episodes each Tuesday at 10p about seven “bad girls” living together which will inspire them to change their ways or not. Produced by Bunim-Murray Productions.
- Campus Ladies – season two premieres December 5 at 11p with ten half-hour episodes. The improv comedy series follows two middle-aged women as they enter their second year in college. New for this season are several celebrity cameo appearances by Megan Mullally, Jason Alexander, Penny Marshall, Mo’Nique and more.
