Media companies are going to great lengths to draw audiences with event programming, but no one’s going farther than NBCUniversal: The company has inked a deal with Richard Branson‘s Virgin Galactic to document the billionaire and his two adult children on the first commercial space voyage. A prime time special on NBC about Branson’s company will build to a three-hour event the next morning on Today, when the flight launches. “We are thrilled to be exclusive partners with Virgin Galactic on what we believe will be an event of a lifetime,” Sharon Scott, President and General Manager, Peacock Productions, tells Cynopsis. “We look forward to sharing all the major breakthroughs leading to the launch, especially the spaceship’s first test flight into space which should not be too far in the future.” The journey will run across NBCUni brands (Syfy, CNBC, The Weather Channel, etc.) and platforms.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Fox ordered 13 episodes of animated comedy Bordertown, about an anxious border patrol agent who lives next door to an industrious Mexican immigrant, from Seth MacFarlane and Mark Hentemann (Family Guy). The 20th Century Fox satire is scheduled for a debut during the 2014-15 season.

NBC gave a vote of confidence to Sean Saves the World, adding another episode to last month’s initial order of four, for a total of 18. The freshman comedy drew a series-high 1.4 in A18-49 on Thursday with an original installment of The Voice as its lead-in, up 28 percent.

Dan Rather may not be contributing to coverage of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination on CBS, where he was anchor for 24 years, but he will host a special on AXS TV, home of Dan Rather Reports. Rather, who covered the assassination for CBS in 1963, will offer his first-hand account in My Days in Dallas: A Remembrance With Dan Rather, premiering on AXS Monday, November 18 at 8p. Rather will also be talking to NBC about his memories of the tragic event.

Bear is back! Bear Grylls, who spent the summer on NBC‘s Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls, returns to Discovery Channel tonight at 10p for Bear Grylls: Escape From Hell. “I am super excited to be working with Discovery again,” said Grylls, who will use his survival skills to relive other people’s life-threatening situations. “Escape From Hell will be intense – but that’s where the fun is!” The series, produced by betty, moves to Wednesdays at 10p starting November 13.

Sportsman Channel‘s “Salute to Service” programming for Veteran’s Day today includes a marathon of military-themed offerings, as well as “soldier salutes,” courtesy of the Department of Defense, from active military personnel. (Gavin Harvey, CEO of Sportsman, tells Cynopsis what he learned from General David Petraeus in tomorrow’s Leadership Lessons at Cynopsis.com.)

In time for Veteran’s Day, History announced a continuation of its “Mission to Honor” initiative dedicated to recognizing American veterans with on-air, online and in school visibility, and increased social media outreach through #THANKAVET. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden appear in a PSA for Take a Veteran to School Day.

Emotions run high on tonight’s finale of Dream School, where kids who dropped out or were expelled have been mentored by celebrity teachers determined to change the course of their lives. Prepare for tears on Sundance Channel tonight at 10p. On the net’s website, 50 Cent and the Dream School students give back to the community in a bonus, digital-only clip. The hip-hop mogul talks about his experience on the show and what it meant to the students on SundanceChannel.com.

YouTube‘s DanceOn channel has partnered with Coca-Cola and (Red), an organization that raises money to fight AIDS, for a Coca-Cola Mini Challenge. The cast of D-trix Presents Dance Showdown hits the streets of LA this week with Glee’s Harry Shum, Jr. to learn a new dance move; fans can upload videos of themselves dancing to YouTube or Instagram, using #CokeREDMoves in the title or the hashtag, to help fund medicine for people living with HIV.

ABC and CBS tied for the top spot in A18-49 Friday night in fast nationals. ABC’s Shark Tank, airing at 9p, was the number one show for the eighth consecutive week, tying its season high 2.0/6. Headlines about The X Factor‘s do-over night, when a technical glitch on-screen Wednesday forced the final 13 to compete again on Thursday, didn’t translate to ratings. The slumping Fox singing competition, batted around in its time slot this fall by baseball, went from a 1.5 A18-49 on Wednesday to a series-low 1.2 the next night.

CW‘s The Vampire Diaries hit 1.3/4 in the A18-49 demo on Thursday, to beat Fox and ABC (which drew .9/3 for Once Upon in Wonderland) in the 8p hour.

Oxygen‘s Preachers of L.A. – the most social cable reality program in primetime on November 6, per SocialGuide – won a season-high 433,000 viewers among W18-49 on Wednesday, its fifth consecutive week of growth in the target demo, according to Nielsen
