A major executive shake-up occurred at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network as the network’s CEO/President, Christina Norman has exited after having been tasked with launching the channel.  Chief executive at Discovery Communications, David Zaslav said to investors last week that OWN had a “slower start” than expected.  Oprah Winfrey said in an interview with EW on Friday: “[OWN] is not where I want it to be.”  OWN debuted January 1, 2011 and its mix of reality and talk shows plus films on a total day basis has marginally exceeded the channel it replaced, Discovery Health.  During primetime, OWN has averaged 297,000 viewers, to Discovery Health’s 250,000.

Effective immediately, Peter Liguori, COO with Discovery Communications will act as interim CEO of OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network through at least the end of 2011 until a replacement is found for exiting president Christina Norman.  The network addressed Liguori’s appointment as reflecting “a transition from a launch phase to a more long-term focus on business and creative strategy, development and execution following the network’s debut on January 1, 2011.”  Liguori will continue as COO for Discovery Communications and will head OWN as the network serves up a roster of new and original content including the talk show helmed by Rosie O’Donnell premiering in October and the opening of Oprah’s Next Chapter in early 2012.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Relativity Media established a Television Sales and Digital Distribution division.   Managed by David Spiegelman, President, Domestic Television and Digital Distribution and his team, the unit forged digital and VOD deals throughout the US for many of Relativity’s single films and third party releases to the free television network marketplace.  Skyline was the first Relativity title released to the EST/VOD platform.   For the free television network arena, Relativity licensed several films including Limitless, Take Me Home Tonight, Skyline, Season of the Witch, The Warrior’s Way, I Love You Phillip Morris and Shark Night 3D to such networks as Turner Networks, Spike TV, Comedy Central, Syfy, G4, MTV, Logo and Telemundo.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The X Factor, the upcoming singing competition series from Simon Cowell for FOX, signed deals with both Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones to become hosts.  Scherzinger is a former lead singer for the Pussycat Dolls and also appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, while Jones is a British television personality.  Also on tap as the fourth judge is Paula Abdul which reunites her with Cowell.  The deal involving Abdul as judge was finalized less than 24 hours before the first audition taping of The X Factor on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Health and wellness guru, Jillian Michaels (NBC’s The Biggest Loser) agreed to a multi-year agreement to join the experts as co-host on the daytime series The Doctors produced by Stage 29 Productions and distributed by CBS Television Distribution (CTD).  The Doctors began in 2008 and the professional experts include ER physician Dr. Travis Stork; OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson; cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon; and pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears.  Furthermore, Michaels will become a special correspondent on Dr. Phil, also distributed by CTD, where she will report on lifestyle topics.

Fresh off her role of portraying the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) in a movie for Lifetime, Camilla Luddington landed a recurring role on Showtime’s Californication.  Luddington will play a nanny who works for Charlie (Evan Handler) and Marcy (Pamela Adlon) after recently being fired from her earlier job.  Showtime renewed Californication, which also stars David Duchovny for a fifth season.

Past Happy Days and Charles in Charge star, Scott Baio has a new comedy series in the works for Nick at Nite.  The sitcom titled Daddy’s Home is about a stay-at-home dad whose soap opera wife wants to pursue the spotlight.  Jason Hervey and Baio will executive produce and the series is written by Tina Albanese and Pat Labyoteaux.

Veteran actor Charles S. Dutton landed a role in FX’s drama pilot Powers, playing Captain Cross, the head of a homicide police unit where two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim investigate crimes involving superpowers.  Powers is based on the Image Comics series by Brian Michael Bendis and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions.  Charles H. Eglee is adapting the comic for television.  Dutton is well-known for his 1990s lead role in FOX’s dramedy series Roc.
