~ MORE STUFF ~

Comcast is exercising an option to sell most of its minority ownership in A&E Networks that came with its purchase of NBCUniversal in 2011.  Comcast owns a 15.8% stake in A&E Networks as of March 26, according to a 10-Q filing issued last Wednesday though the report does not specify how much of its A&E Networks’ stake Comcast is selling.  Comcast expects the transaction to finalize during the second half of this year.  The portion of A&E Networks held by Comcast, which includes the cable networks A&E Network, HISTORY and Lifetime is worth an estimated $2 billion also according to the filing.  With each owning 42% of A&E Networks, Hearst and Disney will likely split the ownership of the company going forward.  These two companies also co-own ESPN though Hearst holds a 20% stake in the sports network.  Comcast continues to hold smaller stakes in the companies SpectrumCo, MSNBC.com, Clearwire and Weather Channel.

A programming fee dispute between DISH Network Corp and AMC Networks Corp may result in subscribers of DISH losing access to such TV shows as Mad Men and The Walking Dead next month.  The two companies have also been embroiled in a breach-of-contract lawsuit spanning four years involving a subsidiary of AMC Networks called VOOM HD.  AMC contends DISH improperly terminated a contract in 2008 involving VOOM HD and is seeking more than $2.5 billion in damages against DISH.  This case is scheduled to go to trial in the New York State Supreme Court.  In a statement released on Friday by DISH spokesperson Bob Toevs, the satellite provider will drop the channels IFC, Sundance Channel, WE tv and AMC when its contract with AMC Networks expires in June.  DISH has further asserted AMC was charging too much for its programming and informed its customers they can still get AMC Networks’ programming via online, Netflix or Amazon.com.  AMC at first had concluded DISH was dropping its cable networks related to the lawsuit involving VOOM HD though DISH responded the VOOM HD issue was a separate matter.

Air travel series On the Fly will premiere on TLC May 24 at 9p.  The new 13-episode series goes inside the operations of Southwest Airlines by traveling to different airports across the country.  The series profiles the staff working for Southwest Airlines as well as customers at the airports in Austin, TX, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans and Nashville among others.  On the Fly is produced by ITV Studios America for TLC.

In the midst of its second season, The Borgias was renewed by Showtime for a third season slated to premiere in 2013.  Production will begin this summer in Budapest on the drama involving Vatican intrigue set during the Italian Renaissance.  Jeremy Irons headlines the cast playing Pope Alexander VI along with second season cast members Francois Arnaud, Holliday Grainger, Joanne Whalley, Lotte Verbeek, David Oakes and Colm Feore.  Neil Jordan will continue in his capacity as creator, executive producer and writer/director of select episodes for the third season.  The Borgias airs on Sundays at 10p and the second season finale is scheduled to air June 17 at 10p.

Cop drama Southland was renewed by TNT for a fifth season.  The network ordered 10 episodes for the next season which will premiere in February 2013.  The series is executive produced by John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco and is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

George “Goober” Lindsey, best known for playing Gomer Pyle’s cousin “Goober” on The Andy Griffith Show died yesterday in Nashville at the age of 83.  In addition to his role on The Andy Griffith Show, Mr. Lindsey appeared in other classic TV shows including Mayberry R.F.D., M*A*S*H, Gunsmoke, Herbie the Love Bug and C.H.I.P.S.  He also was in movies such as Take This Job and Shove It and Cannonball Run II and was a judge for the Miss USA pageant for years and further was a voice talent for a variety of Disney animated characters in movies including The Aristocats, The Rescuers and Robin Hood.  In 1971, Mr. Lindsey recorded a comedy album titled Goober Sings! following his acting stint on Mayberry R.F.D. which caught the attention of the executives of the country variety show Hee Haw.  Mr. Lindsey became part of that show’s cast for the next twenty years.  Beyond his acting and performing career, Mr. Lindsey was involved in philanthropic work and was the recipient of the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award.  Mr. Lindsey is survived by one daughter and one son; two grandchildren and his longtime companion, Anne Wilson.

Mr. Lindsey’s friend and fellow actor, Andy Griffith said in a statement released yesterday: “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago. We would talk about our health, how much we missed our friends who passed before us and usually about something funny. I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, ‘I love you.’ That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. ‘I love you.’ “

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

On Friday, CBS Corporation offered a new employment contract to Les Moonves that retains him as President/CEO through February 22, 2015 and further extends his services to create new shows for the network after he fulfills his post.  Moonves has not yet agreed to CBS’ terms involving the production end of the deal.  The production deal is a four-year term and CBS will invest up to $3 million per year for staffing, infrastructure and to secure rights to projects Moonves wants to develop.  Moonves will additionally receive a fixed sum of $1.5 million per year for his exclusive services.  The production agreement also calls for Moonves to submit a minimum number of projects per season and CBS will have to order three series per year over the four-year term.  Furthermore, CBS would get a first-look at any movie project Moonves develops during the timeframe of the agreement.
