CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/23/05

Good morning.  It’s Monday, May 23, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Sony Pictures Television will handle the commercial inventory to national advertisers in the syndication upfront market of Program Partners‘ Canadian off-net syndicated offering, Da Vinci’s Inquest.   The show has already been cleared by Program Partners in 80% of the US, including the CBS O&O stations in New York, LA, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Miami and Minneapolis. The terms for this series are straight barter.

E! has named Tara Reid to host its four season of Wild On!, the series which takes viewers through the various celebrity nighttime hotspots.  Previous hosts of the series have been Brooke Burns, Jules Asner and Cindy Taylor.  The show returns to the schedule in August.

Sci-Fi Channel has picked up the off-net cable rights to the limited broadcast series Firefly which originally aired on Fox in fall 2002.  Firefly will debut on Sci-Fi this July.

GSN will debut a new series on July 18 called Ballbreakers where amateur pool players will compete for a $20k purse.  And these are not your ordinary amateur pool players – competing will be Lou Diamond Philips, Camryn Manheim, Noah Wyle among other notables.  X-Gamer Sal Masakela will host the series.  Also coming to the net is a documentary series called Anything to Win about true stories of people who have risked everything in hopes of winning.

Tonight’s Season Finales:
Fox:  24 at 8p
WB:  7th Heaven at 8p
WB:  Everwood at 9p

Weekend Box Office Estimates: May 20-22, 2005
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge/Sith (Fox)   $108.5 million – opening weekend*
Monster in Law (New Line)                         $14.4 million – 2 wk total $44.2m
Kicking and Screaming (Universal)            $10.5 million – 2 wk total $34.0m
Crash (Lions Gate)                                     $5.5 million – 3 wk total $27.6m
Unleashed (Focus)                                     $3.8 million – 2 wk total $17.6m
Kingdom of Heaven (Fox)                           $3.4 million – 3 wk total $41.0m
House of Wax (Warner Bros.)                    $3.2 million – 3 wk total $26.8m
The Interpreter (Universal)                          $2.8 million – 5 wk total $65.3m
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Buena Vista) $2.0 million – 4 wk total $46.9m
Mindhunters (Dimension)                           $.9 million – 2 wk total $3.5m
Source: Box Office Mojo

*Opening Day for Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith on Thursday, May 19, drew $50.0 million; Thursday another $33.8 million; Saturday $40.9 million; and Sunday $33.8 million, all adding up $158.5 million over the four days.  Thursday’s opening was the single largest opening day in movie history, beating Shrek 2 in May 2004 ($44.8 million), and Spider-Man 2 ($40.4 million) in June 2004.  Spider-Man does continue to hold the biggest box office draw for an opening weekend which was $114.8 million in May 2002. So much for studios claiming people aren’t going to the movies anymore.  Apparently they are going, if there’s something they want to see.

Correction:   Peter Liguori’s name was misspelled in last Friday’s edition of Cynopsis.  He’s new to the Fox network and still new to my spellchecker.

Let’s debate.  Standard sport this time of year, once the broadcast network’s fall schedules have been announced, is to predict which shows will do well, which will fall by the wayside, and who will beat whom.  Certainly not above participating in this pastime, here are the Cynopsis predictions of which network will win what primetime hours.  Bear in mind we have not seen the full episodes of many of the new series and are banking our predictions based on the promotional reels which we will all agree are not necessarily a dependable barometer on the potential success of a show – good or bad.  If you have something to debate here, feel free to throw in your predictions – some of which (can’t possibly do all of them!) will be posted in the E-Mails to the Editor section this Thursday in the Cynopsis: Weekender. That gives you a couple of days to mull the schedule over before committing to anything. (Please include your name/company in your response, or if anonymous, your title and type of company.)  Send in your comments here, and put Predictions in the subject line.

Cynopsis Predictions:  (just my opinion, nothing else)
Mondays: All CBS.  Its slate of sitcoms, new and returning, will prove a solid performer for the fall.  Fox’s scheduling of Arrested Development in the starting position and as the lead-in to two new series is risky at best and can easily backfire.  However, Prison Break at 9p on Fox could be a dark horse and may break through the CBS 9p lock.  CSI Miami will hold its top position.
8pm – CBS – The King of Queens/How I Met Your Mother
9pm – CBS – 2-1/2 Men/Out of Practice
10p –  CBS – CSI Miami
Tuesday:  NBC will return with the biggest winner at 8p in The Biggest Loser.  House is the clear favorite at 9p given its performance this year, although Commander in Chief on ABC remains a strong contender to eat away at House’s audience. L&O: SVU will retain its winning position at 10p.
8pm – NBC – The Biggest Loser
9pm – Fox – House
10p –  NBC – L&O: SVU
Wednesday:  While there will be plenty of sampling of Martha’s The Apprentice series, and the younger female viewers will again flock to America’s Next Top Model and One Tree Hill, Fox’s sitcoms will end up winning the hour.  9p is the hardest to predict.  Lost, assuming it can hold its strength in its storyline, will win the hour.  However, if it falters, it opens the door for E-Ring on NBC and Criminal Minds on ABC, both of which show a lot of potential.
8pm – Fox – That 70’s Show, Stacked
9pm – ABC – Lost
10p –  CBS – CSI: NY
Thursday: Thursday nights will be all CBS again next season, despite the willingness of all the networks to jump in and give this night a go.  Everyone Hates Chris on UPN will drum up some interest, and The O.C. will continue to draw for Fox.  At 9p, The Night Stalker and Reunion both show some promise, while Everwood on WB and Love Inc. on UPN will draw some of the younger 18-24 viewers. The biggest question is 10p, and with ER losing  Noah Wiley, I predict Without a Trace will surpass it this season.
8pm – CBS – Survivor
9pm – CBS – CSI
10p –   CBS – Without a Trace
Friday: Three Wishes will attempt to do for NBC what EM: Home Edition does for ABC on Sunday nights – draw in hordes of women (who in turn are dragging in the men) and win the hour. Female viewers not attracted to Three Wishes will turn to Supernanny on ABC instead.  UPN’s bold move of switching WWE Smackdown to Friday nights will certainly drum up some business for among the male viewers.  At 9p I predict Hope & Faith and Hot Properties will win the hour, though Threshold did elicit a surprisingly positive response from the upfront presentation audience last week for CBS. It could become the hour’s dark horse.   NUMB3RS will hold the 10p hour without trouble.
8pm – NBC – Three Wishes
9pm – ABC – Hope & Faith / Hot Properties
10p – CBS – NUMB3RS
Saturday:  Until someone, anyone, decides to get back into the game on Saturday night, it will continue to be all about Fox, and the upcoming fall season will bear that out.
8pm – Fox – Cops, Cops
9pm – Fox – America’s Most Wanted
10p –  n/a – winner depends on the network’s movies, or when they switch back to repeats
Sunday:  Again next season, Sunday night will belong to ABC.  The only significant difference this season to next on Sunday is the addition of West Wing on at 8p, which doesn’t have the cache it once did and won’t be enough to create any real fire for NBC.
7pm – ABC – AFV
8pm – ABC – EM: Home Edition
9pm – ABC – Desperate Housewives
10p –   ABC – Grey’s Anatomy
Just to mess with stuff, I would also switch around a few things on the schedule. I’d move Criminal Minds (CBS) to Mondays at 9p, and take the displaced sitcoms 2-1/2 Men and Out of Practice, and put them on Tuesdays at 10p, thereby breaking the legal drama block. Close to Home (CBS) would then go to Wednesdays at 9p, switching the focus from primarily male cast dramas to a female lead among the A18-49 draws (Veronica Mars being an 18-24 or 18-34 female draw).
