Lifetime approved a new docu-series, The Houston Family Chronicles (wt) that allows viewers inside the lives of the late Whitney Houston’s family. The series will chronicle Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and manager; Pat’s daughter, Rayah; Whitney’s brother, Gary; daughter, Bobbi Kristina; and her mother, Cissy Houston. The series will follow Whitney’s family as they pick up the pieces following the untimely death of the pop star icon. Lifetime has ordered 10 one-hour episodes which will premiere this year produced by Jarrett Creative.
This fall, VH1 will answer the question, what has happened to popular TV, movie and pop stars from the last 20 years? The series Miss You Much, hosted by actress/comedienne Catherine Reitman will answer this question by profiling three favorite stars of the past each week. Miss You Much will have 8 half-hour episodes slated to premiere in September. A few of the celebrities profiled include Jamie Walters of 90210, Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees, Lark Voorhies from Saved By the Bell, Jeremy Jackson of Baywatch among others. The series is executive produced by Shelly Tatro, Karla Hidalgo and Jeff Olde for VH1.
Discovery Channel’s newest series, Final Offer debuts May 31 at 10p and features four of the country’s best antiques dealers, Jacob Chait, Patrick Painter, Billy Roland and Jordan Tabach-Bank as they competitively bid on a variety of high-ticket items. The series, hosted by Michael Kalish, will watch as sellers get a chance to negotiate with the series’ experts on their historical artifacts to original artwork and celebrity memorabilia. UPFRONT 2012: ABC
ABC has ordered several new drama series including the musical drama Nashville starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere; Red Widow; Zero Hour all from ABC Studios; 666 Park Ave. from Warner Bros. Television; and Last Resort from Sony Television and executive producer Shawn Ryan. ABC further ordered the comedies: The Neighbors, Comeback Jack and Malibu Country from ABC Studios and How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life from 20th Century Fox and Imagine TV. Other new series ordered by ABC include Family Tools and Mistresses.
In addition, ABC has renewed many series for 2012-2013 including the first year shows Scandal, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23, Last Man Standing, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and Suburgatory in addition to granting third seasons to Body of Proof and Happy Endings; fourth season renewals to The Middle and Modern Family; a fifth season of Castle; a sixth season of Private Practice; a ninth season of Grey’s Anatomy as well as renewing the reality series Dancing With the Stars, Shark Tank, The Bachelor, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Wife Swap and Celebrity Wife Swap.
ABC has canceled: Charlie’s Angels, GCB, Man Up, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It.

UPFRONT 2012: CBS
CBS has ordered seven series including two comedies, four dramas and one reality show. The comedies are Friend Me and Partners; the dramas include Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes solving crimes in New York City, 1960s period drama Vegas starring Dennis Quaid, police drama Golden Boy and the legal drama Made in Jersey. The lone new competition reality series is The Job from executive producers Michael Davies and Mark Burnett with Lisa Ling serving as host.
Renewals for CBS include its comedy Two and a Half Men back for a 10th season with Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones from Warner Bros. Television along with The Amazing Race, The Big Bang Theory, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, 48 Hours Mystery, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-O, How I Met Your Mother, The Mentalist, Mike & Molly, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, 60 Minutes, Survivor, 2 Broke Girls and Undercover Boss.
CBS has canceled the following series: CSI: Miami, and the first-year series Unforgettable, A Gifted Man, NYC 22 and the midseason comedy Rob! as well as How To Be a Gentleman.

UPFRONT 2012: The CW
The CW orders five pilots to series: The Carrie Diaries from Fake Empire in association with Warner Bros. Television; Beauty and the Beast from CBS Studios; Cult; First Cut from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros.; and Arrow based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow.
Returning series for The CW include Gossip Girl for a sixth season, Nikita for a third season and first-year series Hart of Dixie for a second run as well as America’s Next Top Model. These add to the previously-announced renewals including The Vampire Diaries, 90210 and Supernatural.
Canceled series on The CW include H8R, Remodeled, Ringer and The Secret Circle.

UPFRONT 2012: FOX
FOX has ordered five series to order, most of which were previously-announced: Ben & Kate, The Following, Goodwin Games, The Mindy Project and The Mob Doctor.
FOX’s renewals include American Dad, American Idol, Bob’s Burgers, Bones, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, Fringe, Glee, Hell’s Kitchen, New Girl, Raising Hope, The Simpsons, Touch and The X Factor.
Canceled series on FOX consist of Alcatraz, Allen Gregory, Breaking In, The Finder, I Hate My Teenage Daughter and Terra Nova.

UPFRONT 2012: UNIVISION COMMUNICATIONS INC.
On Friday, Univision Communications hosted a telephone conference for the media and also released its upfront lineup prior to its formal presentation held tomorrow morning. Univision President/CEO Randy Falco; Univision Networks President Cesar Conde; and President/Advertising Sales and Marketing, David Lawenda offered the company’s Upfront highlights which also coincides with Univision’s 50th anniversary. Under the heading: Latinos live here, at Univision, the company boasts a 94% live viewership rate and a 68% unduplicated reach. Univision also unveiled several digital initiatives such as Uvideos Digital Network housing thousands of hours of on-demand content set to launch this summer; the launch of new, genre-specific broadband channels; and for the first time Televisa and Univision Studios will join forces to co-produce a webnovela targeting US Hispanics with production beginning this fall; in addition to expanded distribution and discovery across its platforms via partnerships with Dish, AT&T, Hulu, YouTube, Fanhattan, iOS and Android.
Highlights of Univision Network’s 2012-2013 Programming Lineup include:
- Novelas: Univision continues to program engaging stories from its exclusive production partnership with Televisa. Two new novelas include: Amor Bravio (When the Heart Commands) and Por Ella Soy Eva (For Her, I’m Eva) with both airing Monday-Friday in primetime.
- Reality genre brings back Mira Quien Baila! (Look Who’s Dancing!) for a third season on Sundays in primetime from Univision Studios and Endemol; Nuestra Belleza (Our Latin Beauty) for a seventh season on Sundays in primetime from Univision Studios; Parodiando (Parody) for a second season on Sundays in primetime from Televisa; and Pequenos Gigantes (Little Giants) for a second season on Sundays in primetime from Televisa.
- In daytime, Univision on Fridays this summer offers up Despierta America Concert Series at 7a.
TeleFutura Network has one drama series: La Otra Cara (The Other Face) which is a re-imagining of the network’s successful novela, La Usurpadora (The Pretender). La Otra Cara will air in primetime. TeleFutura also will air movies in primetime each night including such Hollywood hits as X-Men: The Last Stand, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Tron: Legacy and more.
Galavision Network has two series for primetime, both from Televisa: the comedic adventure Los Heroes del Norte 2 (Heroes of the North 2) and a series focused on boxing, Cloroformo. In addition, Galavision has an original docu-reality series, Mistico (Mystic) in primetime as well as the half-hour info-tainment series Detras del Saber (Behind Knowledge) airing Monday-Thursday.
UPFRONT 2012: Sundance Channel
Sundance Channel has five original non-fiction series in development for its 2012-2013 season:
- Dream School, based on a UK format is executive produced by Jamie Oliver and Fresh One. The series offers up an ambitious social experiment where the best people in their fields teach kids in a dream school where a rock star teaches music, P.E. is headed by an Olympian and the science professor is a Nobel Prize winner.
- Dead & Found is a dramatic non-fiction series about a team of government investigators in Reno who attempt to decode the lives behind unidentified dead bodies. Produced by This is Just a Test.
- Kenya & Carl features husband and wife team, Kenya and Carl who are marriage counselors set to prove partners can be open and honest with each other in every way. Produced by GRB.
- The Trouble with Love and Sex is a series that reveals the actual recordings from couples’ therapy sessions and brings them to life via animated stories. Produced by BBC Worldwide.
- Wino features self-taught wine sommelier Brian Kalliel following him as he travels the world using wine as a means into a country’s culture and its people. Produced by Giant Pirates Entertainment.
Sundance Channel also has the upcoming scripted drama series Rectify and the miniseries from Jane Campion titled Top of the Lake which premieres in 2013.
Sundance Channel additionally renewed the series The Mortified Sessions for a second season with six half-hour episodes produced by Relativity Real. Hosted by David Nadelberg, the series digs up embarrassing teenage photos and personal history of celebrities. Sundance Channel also previously announced the return of All on the Line with Joe Zee for a third season with eight one-hour episodes produced by Authentic Entertainment and Iconoclasts for a sixth season debuting this fall with six half-hour episodes produced by @radical.media.
UPFRONT 2012: CNN en Espanol
CNN’s independently produced 24-hour Spanish network, CNN en Espanol hosted an event late last week at New York City’s Gansevoort Park Hotel. The network offered up new programming including:
- Los Influyentes hosted by Claudia Palacios discusses events that are changing the history of Latin America, the US and the world.
- Trending Topics is a weekly program hosted by Rene Solorio featuring the latest videos, words, phrases and topics found via social media.
- Latinoamerica Opina is a virtual debate focused on current and relevant issues to Latin American society.
- Destinos, hosted by Claudia Palacios travels to the world’s most interesting cities.
- Oppenheimer Presenta offers analysis on the major trends of current topics and how they affect people, families and countries hosted by Andres Oppenheimer. This program is transmitted Sundays at 9p.

Two unscripted dramas have been added to TNT’s slate. The projects include the police procedural docu-drama Boston Blue (wt) from EP Donnie Wahlberg (Blue Bloods, Boomtown) and the competition series 72 Hours (wt). TNT has given each series orders comprised of eight episodes and plans to launch both in 2013. Boston Blue centers on the men and women of the Boston Police Department’s elite Gang Unit and is produced by Jarrett Creative Group with Julie Insogna-Jarrett and Seth Jarrett as EPs along with Wahlberg and his Donnie D. Productions. 72 Hours is described as a high-energy competition series that drops competing teams into the wilderness. The participants are given only three days and a GPS tracking device to find a hidden suitcase full of cash though they face many challenges in the process of finding the suitcase before the rival teams do. Lighthearted Entertainment is producing with Howard Schultz and Rob LaPlante as EPs and Jeff Spangler as co-EP.
The US version of Top Gear on HISTORY is commencing production on its third season. The series, hosted by comedian Adam Ferrara, champion race car driver Tanner Foust and racing analyst Rutledge Wood, will explore more of the US while the threesome test the limits of the world’s top automobiles. Top Gear is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and is a co-production of HISTORY and BBC Worldwide.
Los Angeles-based SDI Media (SDI), specializing in integrated and standardized dubbing and subtitling services, has expanded by opening a new full service dubbing studio in Milan, Italy which begins operations this July. The newly-built location will increase SDI’s owned-and-operated worldwide dubbing operations to 21 countries.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: Week to week, all networks remained steady including FOX which won Thursday night at 3.0/9 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, American Idol on FOX led with a 4.0/13 and CBS’ comedies The Big Bang Theory and Rules of Engagement averaged a second place showing at 3.6/12. ABC pivoted into first place during 9p with Grey’s Anatomy at 3.5/10 and CBS trailed at #2 with Person of Interest at 2.6/7. Then at 10p, CBS had a turn at #1 with The Mentalist at 2.4/7 while ABC’s Scandal and Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar shared the #2 spot at 1.9/6 each.

National Geographic Channels International established a program commissions and content facility in the UK and has appointed EVP/Head of International Content Hamish Mykura to head the new London office. NGCI will be recruiting a new commissioning team which will report to Hamish and based in London. The London office will be the main facility for the commissioning of series and single shows which are broadcast on National Geographic Channel (NGC) outside of the US in 172 countries to more than 335 million homes.
M. Sanjayan, the head scientist for The Nature Conservancy has been tapped as Science and Environmental Contributor for CBS News. He will offer insight into a variety of scientific and environmental topics across multiple platforms and contribute to CBS News broadcasts including CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.
