Good Morning, it’s Monday, May 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

With YouTube still fast at work at its “Claim our Content” filtering system, MySpace introduced a new tool called “Take Down Stay Down” for copyright owners seeking to remove copyright-protected video from the site and keep it removed. After receiving a takedown notice, MySpace creates a digital and audio fingerprint of the content to block subsequent postings. The tool, which automatically checks for versions of the clips saved in multiple formats, is designed to be user-friendly and help MySpace efficiently build a database of unauthorized content. It is powered by Audible Magic Corp.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Google agreed to block four clips on YouTube that the Thai government claimed insulted King Bhumibol Adulyadej, but it is leaving two up, arguing they are “political” rather than insulting in nature. The government blocked all access to YouTube from Thailand after the videos appeared last month. Thailand’s minister of communications even threatened to sue Google if the clips weren’t removed. No word yet whether or not the YouTube embargo will be lifted.
 
Daytime TV fans can get into the act of submitting their own video testimonials for the upcoming 34th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards on June 15. Fans have until May 20 to submit a video explaining why they support their favorite actor, actress, talk show or drama storyline. Producers will choose which segments to air during the awards show.
 
The Beatles catalog should be available for digital download soon, according to comments made by Paul McCartney in Billboard. McCartney’s new album Memory Almost Full, due out June 5 on Starbucks new Hear Music label, will be the artist’s first made available for download, streaming and listening on mobile phones. Look for it in the Hear Music section of the iTunes store. 
 
The History Channel devised a countdown widget to track the days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining until the Memorial Day premiere of Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed. The widget, which can be embedded on blogs, community sites, etc., features rotating drawings of characters and props from the movie.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~


Social networking sites Facebook and Friendster added classified listings, putting them in direct competition with Craigslist, newspaper sites and community portals. Facebook users can choose to limit listings to only friends in their network or open them to the entire community of 22 million active users. The service is now available for free, but the company plans to charge users in the future to feature ads more prominently on the site.
 
Nintendo Wii
users are using the platform’s “Mii Channel” to create avatars resembling famous people. The “CelebriMiis” can be shared with friends or used in a variety of networked games. Website designer blog kottke.org was onto this trend early and sponsored a contest for the best celebrity Mii.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

As the cable industry scrambles to prepare for the long-awaited roll out of OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP) standards, internet programmers are also witnessing the proliferation of open source software standards. Sun Microsystems is planning to release an open source version of its JavaFX Script programming language later this year, following the recent release of open source tools by Adobe for Flash and by Microsoft for its Silverlight multimedia platform. 
 
HDNet founder Mark Cuban and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley testified before a Congressional subcommittee last week that online video is not a threat to the traditional TV business. Cuban described online video as complementary rather than primary. Hurley suggested YouTube is actually helping to increase network viewership, recalling a CBS statement that posted clips helped boost ratings by 5% on certain shows.
 
Sling Media founder and CEO Kirk Krikorian also took the stand to share stories about some of the ways Slingbox is being used to deliver video. Troops in Iraq use it to view American TV, for instance, and congressmen can use it watch news from their local market, he suggested. Krikorian also mentioned a practice pioneered by the CBS O&O KPIX in San Francisco. The station uses the device to transmit live video to air from wirelessly-connected Slingboxes deployed in the field. For instance, the KPIX “Commute Cam” captures live traffic shots from unmanned cameras for a fraction of the cost to send a crew.
 
Verizon picked up a net of 141,000 new FiOS TV customers during the first quarter, bringing its total subscriber base to 348,000. FiOS TV passed 3.1 million homes as of March 31.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~


Young & Rubicam is creating a new in-house interactive unit to meet increasing demand for digital advertising initiatives. The Y&R digital unit will bring together about 250 employees currently working on interactive throughout 165 offices worldwide. The new WPP Group agency will be headed by Tarik Sedsky, who will take the role of Chief Digital Officer. He joins from Atmosphere BBDO, where he served as Managing Director of Account Management.
 
Coldwell Banker is sponsoring HGTV.com‘s home improvement documentary series “ Ten Ways to Improve the Value of Your Home.” The real estate company is working with N.J.-based Reology Corp. to integrate advertising messages and its own content with the HGTV webisodes. 
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Video ads generate the highest overall click-through rates among internet-based ads in Europe among a downturn in banner ad click-throughs, according to Frankfurt-based ADTECH AG. Video ads received a 5% to 6% response rate on average while top-of-the-page leaderboards only garnered a .12% click-through rate.

Fox Broadcasting created a new in-house advertising agency Fox Infinity that will make digital a priority, naming Chris Carlisle, EVP/Marketing to head up the new operation. Fox Infinity consolidates content design, development and operation and will provide services across all News Corp. media companies. Bill Bradford will serve as SVP/Content Strategy, and former FX employee Michael Vamosy joins as SVP/Design, both reporting to Chris.
 


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

MomMeTV celebrated its one-year anniversary yesterday, a Mommy-devoted broadband video site featuring over 25 channels covering topics such as pregnancy, working at home, child development and fitness. The site recently added social networking features to allow users to share family photos and videos, start social groups and blog on topics near to their hearts. MomMeTV now profiles the top video blogs and video debates on the home page to help draw more user participation and syndicates its video content through Brightcove to Parenthood.com, theMomlink.com and other parenting sites.
