A handful of casting updates from ABC:
- Edgar Allen Poe will be played by Christopher Egan (Kings, Home and Away) for the fall drama pilot, Poe. The drama depicts Poe as a crime fighter in 1840s Boston.
- Bruce Greenwood landed a role on the drama pilot, The River about a group of friends and family who begin a search for a famous adventurer/TV personality who, along with his crew, goes missing in the Amazon. Greenwood will play Emmet Cole. Eloise Mumford as Lena and Joe Anderson as Lincoln have already been cast. Jason Blum and Steven Schneider are producing with writer/director Oren Peli, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. DreamWorks TV and ABC Studios are behind the project.
- Darren Star’s (Sex and the City) dramedy Good Christian Bitches tapped Miriam Shor (Damages) to play Cricket. The plot is about Amanda (Leslie Bibb) a former “mean girl” in high school who returns home to Dallas after her marriage ends and finds herself in the middle of gossip-mongering church-going wives. Jennifer Aspen and Annie Potts have already been cast. ABC Studios is producing.
NBC also has several casting news bits:
- Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston was cast in her first regular TV series playing Eileen, a smart, classy though cynical theater producer in NBC’s pilot Smash, starring with Debra Messing and Christian Borle. The drama is about a group that wants to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical. Steven Spielberg is executive producing as well as Justin Falvey, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Theresa Rebeck is penning the pilot and Michael Mayer will direct.
- Another former Battlestar Galactica cast member, Tricia Helfer is joining the cast of NBC’s sci-fi-themed pilot 17th Precinct. The drama’s plot is set in the fictional town of Excelsior, a place where magic and the supernatural trump over science. Helfer will portray Morgana, a necromancer who knows how to use potions, tools, herbs and spells of her trade. Helfer’s other Battlestar Galactic cast mates include the recently-announced James Callis and Jamie Bamber.
- David Walton landed the male lead on the single-camera romantic comedy pilot, Bent playing opposite Amanda Peet, per TVLine. The comedy is about a recently divorced Type A single mom (Peet) who is attracted to her handsome contractor (Walton) hired to renovate her kitchen. This is a second position casting role for Walton who also appears in the midseason comedy Perfect Couples also on NBC.
CBS cast Becki Newton to star in a comedy pilot about a blue-collar man who lives with his wife, their grown daughter (Newton) and her 12-year old son and his recently-widowed mother. Jeff and Jackie Filgo (That ’70s Show) are writing the script and Andy Ackerman (Seinfeld) was tapped to direct. Newton’s last TV job was a role in NBC’s anthology series Love Bites and one of her co-stars on Love Bites, Greg Grunberg also landed the lead in A&E Network’s comedy Big Mike.
Starting today, Kevin Frazier, former correspondent with Entertainment Tonight (ET), will become Co-Anchor of The Insider joining current anchor Lara Spencer. Additionally, Chris Jacobs will become a Correspondent on ET. The Insider and ET are both produced and distributed by CBS Television Distribution.
Casting Call: Discovery Fit & Health network is seeking survivors who have sustained facial injuries as a result of domestic violence or violent crimes for the docu-series, Facing Trauma. The series will watch as Dr. Andrew Jacono, a Dual Board Certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon as he transforms the faces and lives of people who have been tragically damaged by violence. Dr. Jacono will provide his services for free to help the survivor. Please submit your story or nominate someone you know who could be a potential candidate. Email your story and contact information to: [email protected].
