~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Many of the cast members of PBS’ Downton Abbey have been signed for a fourth and a fifth season, reports TVLine.  Those who have apparently extended their contracts include Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora), Hugh Bonneville (Robert), Joanne Froggatt (Anna) and Brendan Coyle (Bates).  The cast member’s original contracts carried them through the third season which is currently in production.  Downton Abbey has not been officially renewed beyond the third season which is set to debut in the US next January.  The season two finale which aired in February attracted 5.4 million total viewers and tallied the best audience in three years for PBS.

Making a comeback to sitcom TV, Leah Remini (CBS’ The King of Queens, CBS’ The Talk) landed a role on ABC’s comedy White Van Man.  The plot is about a guy (Kyle Bornheimer) who is forced to put his dreams on hold to run the family handyman business from his father Tony (J.K. Simmons). Remini will play Tony’s sister Terry who keeps the lead character in line when he tries to sneak out to go to work again.  ABC Studios is producing.

Former Friday Night Lights star Matt Lauria is joining ABC’s period drama pilot Gilded Lilys from Shonda Rhimes.

Irish actress Ruth Bradley snagged the title role of ABC’s Beauty and the Beast playing Grace, an embattled princess.  Bradley will star along with Darius Campbell who will play Shiro, Grace’s “beast” of a bodyguard and Chris Egan will play her fiance Gorrick.  This spring, Bradley will be seen playing Mary Maloney in the ABC miniseries Titanic scheduled on April 14 and 15.

Alex O’Loughlin is taking a leave of absence from production on CBS’ Hawaii Five-O.  The actor’s representative made this statement: “Alex is taking a short break from Hawaii Five-0 to receive supervised treatment for prescription pain medication due to a recent shoulder injury.”  CBS Television Studios also said in a release: “We respect and support Alex’s decision.  Everyone at CBS Television Studios and Hawaii Five-O wishes him well and we look forward to his return.”

Based on the Mommy Track Mysteries book series, drama pilot Applebaum for CBS added Rachelle Lefevre as the lead.  Lefevre will star as a former public defender that becomes a private investigator to fend off the boredom she has as a stay-at-home mom.

NBC handed Andre Holland (Friends With Benefits) a role on its single-camera comedy pilot 1600 Penn.  Holland will play White House Press Secretary Marshall Malloy joining previously cast Josh Gad, Brittany Snow and Bill Pullman who plays the POTUS.  Twentieth Century Fox Television is producing.

Keri Lizer’s comedy for NBC cast Minnie Driver to star opposite Andrea Anders in Lady Friends.  The comedy is about two life-long female friends who live very different lives but can’t live without each other.  Driver will play Jen, who has made terrible decisions in her life but is Nicole’s (Anders) steady rock.

Also for NBC, Amy Smart (Shameless) will next be seen in a pilot adaptation of the UK’s prison series Bad Girls as a seemingly perfect woman who is caught stealing and running up her friend’s credit card.  John Wells is producing the pilot.

Julia Stiles landed a role on NBC’s pilot Midnight Run portraying Leah Kafka, a cult specialist with the FBI who investigates a series of disappearances within a cult-like commune in Alaska.  Stiles last appeared on Showtime’s Dexter.

NBC’s pilot Revolution added Billy Burke in the one-hour drama project from J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke.

In addition to Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto will also return for the second season of FX’s horror anthology series American Horror Story.

The lead for BET’s pilot Single Black Female snagged Gabrielle Union.  The project is from The Game producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil centered on the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show (Union).
