Good morning, it’s Monday, March 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Intel launches a branding campaign today to be the “Intel Inside” multiplatform content devices. The Atom family of microprocessors is designed to power pocket-sized, internet-connected gadgets and low cost PCs expected to hit the market later this year. Early compatible prototypes include devices with touchscreens and slide-out keypads.
TVLand.com launches a user generated High School Reunion site today where users can upload photos, interact with old friends and share high school memories. The site, a digital component to a new original series premiering on Wednesday March 5 at 10 ET/PT, will hold weekly popularity contests and feature original minisodes taped by the cast of the linear High School Reunion.
Cartoon Network picked up the U.S. broadcast rights for Blue Dragon from VIZ Media, the Japanese animated series developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy,) based on the popular Xbox 360 console game.
MySpaceTV introduced its first HD video segment on the Trailer Park movie trailer site – an exclusive promo for Iron Man.
ESPN.com will launch more web-exclusive video content this year and is considering adding long-form original video to its programming, according to Forbes.
Rainbow Media’s HD animation channel Animania HD acquired the preschool series Bruno and The Banana Bunch from Paris-based distributor awol. The 13-episode series, which is designed to inspire kids to explore and discover the world around them, will premiere on Saturday March 1 at 9am ET/PT.
Music Choice celebrates “Chicks Who Rule” on its On Demand network this month, women considered to be the ruling ladies of Rock, Pop and Hip-Hop. The list of featured artists includes Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Colbie Caillat, Kat DeLuna, Tiffany Evans, Jordin Sparks, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Juliette Lewis of Juliette and the Licks, and the Sick Puppies’ Emma Anzai.
One of the hottest online casual games and Facebook apps, Scrabble knockoff Scrabulous, is drawing the ire of license owners Hasbro and Mattel as the game attracts over 700,000 players a day, according to The New York Times. The companies are being forced to tread softly so as not to offend the game’s loyal fans. (“Save Scrabulous” groups are already forming online to defend it.) Meanwhile both RealNetworks and Electronic Arts are working on official online versions of the game.
Renowned online videographer Michael Agrusso, aka comic book figurine director ItsJustSomeRandomGuy, put together a trio of videos to help promote the New York Comic Con, taking place April 18-20 at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Content Delivery Network Akamai won the latest battle of a long-standing war over patent infringement with rival Limelight Networks. A jury awarded Akamai $45.5 million in damages plus interest for copyright infringement of its online video delivery system. Akamai intends to ask the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting Limelight from continuing to sell infringing services.
NBC Universal and the Motion Picture Association of America expressed concerns that Congress or the FCC does not hamper content distributor’s ability to manage broadband video traffic when considering net neutrality legislation, according to Broadcasting and Cable. Both groups argued ISPs should be allowed to manage their own networks to help combat bandwidth-hogging P2P video sharing.
Meanwhile NBC Universal will increase its Peacock Equity Fund from an initial $250 million to $1 billion to fuel additional digital acquisitions, according to comments made by Digital Media VP Jessica Schell at last week’s Harvard Business School Entertainment & Media Conference. Recent investments include online ad network Adify, blog network PopSugar and online video network WorldWideBiggies.
Sen. John Kerry chastised Comcast for packing last week’s public Net Neutrality hearing with its own employees, forcing Harvard campus police to turn away an estimated 100 pro-neutrality advocates.
comScore CEO Magid Abraham and SVP of Search and Media James Lamberti tried to assuage fears that its latest paid click-through report spells the decline of paid search in general and of Google in particular. The fact that January’s qSearch report showed a 7% sequential decline in paid clicks for Google may largely be due to Google’s new “quality score” priority placement policy, they wrote. The company is essentially reducing the supply of available spots to bid on while raising the price paid per click, essentially trading quality for volume.

More than three out of four adults are surfing the web while watching TV, and 62% of those surveyed are using the web to look for content related to what they’re watching, according to a new study from video search engine blinkx. “Double dippers” searched most for profiles of actors (51%), products and services advertised during the program they were watching (40%) and information about upcoming/related events (39%).
Ad agencies are missing the boat on social media advertising because they view the trend as a passing fad and lack practical skills and experience to harness the viral power of new social channels, according to a new survey of more than 60 marketers by TNS Media Intelligence/Cymfony. Over 80% of early adopters of social marketing initiatives surveyed say the medium will grow in significance in the next 5 years, compared to only 33% of “wait and see” marketers.
Billboard and Hanshin Contents Link Corp. announced a licensing agreement with Nielsen Business Media, Inc. to launch Billboard charts of top music sellers in Japan. The Billboard Japan charts were introduced last week on “Tsutaya Online” and will be updated each Thursday.
In the midst of the online how-to video craze, Intel launched pc.com, a new site containing advice columns and video tutorials about how to survive in a PC-centric world. PC Advisor helps users choose a PC. pc 101 teaches computer techniques. Tech News profiles the latest developments in the space. It’s all rather stiffly presented, but there’s some useful info here.
