~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FOX and the producers of 24 have mutually agreed this current eighth season of the action series will be its last. 24 will conclude in a special two-hour episode on May 24 at 8p and the final 11 hours of the series will air on consecutive Mondays on FOX at 9p. 24 is a production of 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine Television in association with Teakwood Lane Productions.

ABC is ready to premiere its newest half-hour comedy, Romantically Challenged on April 12 at 932p. Starring Alyssa Milano, Kyle Bornheimer, Josh Lawson and Kelly Stables, and is about the four navigating the dating world. Ricky Blitt created the series produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. and Candy Bar Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

FOX set the spring premiere of Glee for a special time on April 13 at 929p directly after American Idol. Glee will continue in its regular time slot of Tuesdays at 9p the following week. Ryan Murphy Television produces Glee in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

NBC announced to its affiliates it will air the new game show Minute to Win It in the 8p Wednesday time period for three weeks starting March 31 in place of the drama Mercy which would have aired repeats. Minute to Win It will continue to air on Sundays at 8p. Also, NBC is moving the premiere of Friday Night Lights to May 7 at 8p since the network is opting to air the series Who Do You Think You Are? for one  more week.

Tonight, Outdoor Channel debuts a new series, The Baja Unlimited at 730p. The series takes viewers behind the scenes at SCORE’s Baja-based races and the entire racing experience. Outdoor Channel is also bringing back new seasons of other series next month as Savage Wild premieres April 3 at 10p; Step Outside on April 4 at 230p; and Archer’s Choice on April 4 at 12 noon.

At the start of 2010 Upfront season, Nielsen released a new report titled “How Consumers Watch: 2010 TV Upfront Fact Sheet.” A few nuggets about traditional TV and DVR use sifted from the report include:

  • Today, there are more TVs on average in homes in America at 2.86, than people at 2.53.
  • As of 4Q09, the average American watches 34 hours and 37 minutes of TV per week.
  • An estimated 90% of US homes receive either cable TV and/or satellite service (Feb 2010).
  • In 4Q09, DVRs are in 35% of American homes and usage is up +25% from the previous year.
  • DVR users watch approximately 47% of the primetime commercials in programs played back after 3 days.
  • Within homes using DVRs, 85% of all primetime viewing is live (Nov 2009).

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

ABC and Sinclair Broadcast Group renewed their affiliation agreement for nine TV stations representing approximately 5% of the US. The previous affiliation agreement expired at the end of 2009 and was extended twice until March 31 due to negotiations. This new agreement will expire August 31, 2015. Terms of the deal were not disclosed though Sinclair said in its press announcement the agreement included a license fee based partially on retransmission consent revenue.

Warner/Chappell Music, the international music publishing unit of Warner Music Group Corp. picked up the Groove Addicts Production Music Library in Los Angeles as well as the Carlin Recorded Music Library (CRML) based in London. Immediately, both of these acquisitions increase Warner/Chappell’s international production music business and doubles its library of production music to 16 catalogs with 74,000 cues/songs. The deal also allows both Grove Addicts Production Music Library and CRML and its catalogs to be exclusively marketed and licensed by Non-Stop Music, a division of Warner/Chappell Music.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Syfy ordered a half-hour comedy script for a pilot headlined by Jonathan Silverman (Weekend at Bernie’s) and produced by Sony and Happy Madison Productions. Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), creator of the show will also co-star. The plot for the single-camera comedy is about two friends and former actors who starred in a popular sci-fi show. The duo hits rock bottom and must work together to rebuild their lives. Happy Madison and Doug Robinson will executive produce along with Adam Goldberg, Rose and Bomb Productions and Untitled Entertainment.

Bunim-Murray Productions, behind the long-time MTV hit The Real World, was purchased by Paris-based Banijay Entertainment. Jonathan Murray will continue as chairman of Bunim-Murray along with president Gil Goldschein. Bunim-Murray will additionally remain based in Los Angeles and will not change its name.

Martin Short will next appear in FOX’s comedy pilot Tax Man playing the boss at an IRS office in Fresno. Short will co-star along with David Krumholtz. Previously, Short played a recurring role on FX’s Damages.

Don Johnson is in talks to star in ABC’s comedy pilot Southern Discomfort about a tough, conservative Texas (Johnson) whose adult kids move back in with him. Steve Talley also joined the pilot playing the eldest son, a slacker who gave up a baseball scholarship to pursue a writing career.

Casting Call: Meredith Video Studios is looking for first-time moms who are either currently pregnant or have just given birth or adopted their first child in the past two months. The selected candidates must be willing to share and document their preparations for the baby and the first months of being a new mother. Chosen participants will receive a small hand-held camcorder to record and upload video footage which will be part of a special year-long webisode series and shown nationally on a lifestyle television show. Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS made the winning pass Thursday night with 3.9/12 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ first round of NCAA Basketball Championships of the night won with 3.5/12 with NBC’s comedies Community and Parks and Recreation next with an average of 2.0/6. CBS was #1 again with more NCAA Basketball Championships during 9p with 3.9/11 followed closely by ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy at 3.7/10. CBS carried its winning streak through 10p with the NCAA Basketball Championship games at 4.2/12 and ABC was second again, this time with Private Practice at 2.9/8.
