Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Blizzard Entertainment Inc. says it has shifted the focus of its development efforts towards game titles for the next generation of console platforms.  That is all fine and well, except for StarCraft franchise fans that have been treated to previews of the StarCraft: Ghost game and are anxiously awaiting its release since it was first announced back in 2002.  For those fans the news is … well … it’s bleak, as Blizzard’s shift has “indefinitely postponed” its release.  Blizzard says it is evaluating the next-gen console technology and from there will decide how StarCraft: Ghost, and others for that matter, fit into the next-gen console vista.

Fortitude Entertainment Group has unveiled plans to launch Fortitude Gulf in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  The new division will include a full production studio, movie theaters and a theme park.  Fortitude intends to shoot some of its 20 picture slate in Dubai beginning this year.  Over the last year Fortitude has also partnered with Maya Entertainment, the India based animation studio, to form Fortitude Maya as well as establishing Fortitude Jadran in Zagreb, Croatia, which join the company’s other locations in Fortitude Media Europe and South Africa.  Fortitude acquired the movie rights to the young adult book Shadowmancer, which is a parable about the battle between good and evil by author Rev. Graham Taylor.

Sony BMG has optioned the distribution rights to movie The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang.  The SlamDance winning movie comes from some of folks behind Napoleon Dynamite including Tim Skousen, Jared Hess and Jeremy Coon, Munn Powell and Cory Lorenzen.  The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang is a production of Trigger Street Production in partnership with Crazy Dreams Productions.

Graffiti Entertainment, LLC, the video game development and publishing, has been named the official Nintendo Licensed Developer.  Graffiti Entertainment was launched last week as a subsidiary of Signature Devices, Inc.  Under the Graffiti Entertainment name, the company will develop and publish its own proprietary video games as well as distribute games for developers worldwide.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and PMW Retail Group Ltd. opened the first Warner Bros. Studios Store in downtown Shanghai, China over the weekend.  The store is operated by PMW, which has been granted the exclusive rights be WBCP to open and operate WB Studio Stores in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Loews Hotels and Fisher-Price have teamed-up to create Loews Loves Little Kids presented by Fisher-Price, a new program designed to make traveling a little easier for parents with babies/toddlers, 6-36 months, as well as for families with kids up to 10 years-old.  Some of the first hotels to implement the programs include two Loews hotels in Orlando, Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando and Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando.  The program includes: Baby & Toddler Play Classes (45 min, $10, at resort properties), with sessions for parents and either babies 6-18 mos. or toddlers 18-36 mos. both featuring storytelling, art, music and movement activities and a free Loews Hotels CD of kid’s music created by Fisher-Price.  In addition hotels and resorts will offer Getaway Gear, a welcome gift for older kids (up to 10 yrs), and Home Sweet Loews which will provide loaner toys for their youngest guests.

TLC will launch the 13-part series Honey, We’re Killing the Kids on Monday, April 10 at 9p, as part of its new parenting and relationships programming block.  Honey We’re Killing the Kids follows 13 US families where the kids are fed a steady diet of junk food and eat oversized portions, which in combination with a lack of exercise and sleep put them at risk for obesity and various diseases (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease).  Each of the families will work with nutritional expert Dr. Lisa Hark for three weeks.  She will help them understand what life will be like for their kids if they don’t change their habits and lifestyles. They also provide them with rules and suggestions for making better decisions for their families in order to reverse the course.  The series will follow up on the families and see if they are following Hark’s advice or have fallen back to their old ways.  The series is produced for the network by BBC Productions USA.

Buena Vista International Television and Television New Zealand have renewed their long-term programming agreement.  BVITV will provide TVNZ with kid/family friendly series and movies including The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.  Also under the agreement BVITV will continue to supply adult targeted series including Commander In Chief, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and Scrubs.  No terms of the deal were announced.
