FX is placing its anthology series, American Horror Story in the miniseries category for the next Emmy Awards. According to the network, American Horror Story qualifies as a miniseries even though it could compete in the drama category. Last year, the PBS series Downton Abbey swept the miniseries category winning several Emmys though this next year it will be placed in the drama category competing against such drama series as AMC’s Mad Men and others.
Upfront 2012: National Geographic Channel
As part of its Upfront announcement, National Geographic Channel reveals details on five new series and seven returning series, under the leadership of the network’s new executive team, CEO David Lyle, President Howard T. Owens and EVP/Programming Michael Cascio. National Geographic Channel’s five new series include:
- American Chainsaw follows New England chainsaw sculptor and hard rock star Jesse “The Machine” Green and his unusual crew as they create art out of wood for royalty, celebrities, hotels and fans. Eight half-hour episodes produced by K Sirrah Productions for National Geographic Television (Global).
- Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout? is a competition show where adult “civilians” compete against real Boy Scouts in a variety of challenges. Six one-hour episodes from Original Productions (US only).
- Bid & Destroy features the crew of the Danley Demolition Company that finds treasures and tears stuff down. Leftfield Productions is producing the 12 half-hour episodes (US only).
- Brain Games presents interactive experiments to find out how easily our brains can be fooled. National Geographic Television is producing the 12 half-hour episodes (Global).
- Jersey Combat goes inside the largest military warehouse located in New Jersey where they house historic artifacts and deal with competitive buyers for the items that span 500 years. 10 one-hour episodes produced by Firecracker Films (Global).
National Geographic Channel’s returning series include:
- Alaska State Troopers with 20 one-hour episodes from PSG Motion Pictures (US only).
- Border Wars with 12 one-hour episodes from National Geographic Television (US only).

As Nat Geo WILD marks its second anniversary on March 29, 2012, the network showcases four new series for 2012-2013:
- Alpha Dogs highlights the highly-trained dogs of Indiana’s Vohne Liche Kennels that become part of an elite force of K-9s dedicated to serving our country. 16 half-hour episodes from Schweet Entertainment, LLC (US only).
- Animal Intervention from wildlife expert and adventurer Donald Schultz and animal advocate and actor/producer/film director Alison Eastwood, the series follows the pair as they do what is needed to find animals a healthy habitat. Six one-hour episodes from Bienstock Young Media (Global).
- Leader of the Pack features Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan as he rehabilitates dogs whose uncertain futures are threatened with lifelong cages or euthanasia. 12 one-hour episodes from POWWOW Productions (Global).
- Ultimate Animal Countdown is a countdown show featuring various attributes of animal’s to crown the kingdom’s newest leader. 10 one-hour episodes from Natural History New Zealand, Ltd. (Global).

- Man v. Monster with six one-hour episodes from Optomen Productions (Global).

Cast in a new TV role, Alyssa Milano will next be seen in ABC’s new drama series Mistresses. Milano plays Savannah, a successful married attorney who spends long nights working with her attractive new law partner. Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes and Jes Macallan play the other three females leads. Also joining Mistresses is Jason George, playing Milano’s character’s husband while Brett Tucker was cast to play her lover. Mistresses is set to premiere in summer 2013.
CBS’ CSI: Miami co-star Eva LaRue was selected to guest star in ABC’s untitled Mandy Moore comedy pilot. She will play Veronica, one of Annie’s (Moore) sisters. LaRue has an option on the ABC pilot to become a regular cast member should the pilot be picked up to series. The Moore project is in first position for LaRue to her role on CSI: Miami.
Saturday Night Live alum Jenny Slate joined the CBS comedy Super Fun Night about three nerdy female friends on their weekly quest to have a “super fun” time each Friday night. The project is from writer/co-EP and star Rebel Wilson. Slate will play Helen-Alice, best friend to Wilson’s character Kimmie. The multi-camera comedy is from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco in association with Warner Bros. Television.
After her turn on NBC’s drama Prime Suspect, Maria Bello is joining FOX’s new drama series Touch. In a multi-episode run, Bello will play a mother whose daughter shares the same gift as the main character (David Mazouz).
NBC’s TV version of the Hannibal Lecter films tapped Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, the troubled though talented young FBI agent who works with the world’s most notorious serial killer. NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the project produced and written by Bryan Fuller.
Ten-episode drama series Banshee from Alan Ball and set to premiere on Cinemax has cast Rus Blackwell (Recount, Burn Notice). The project is about an ex-con and master thief, Lucas (Antony Starr) who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, PA and continues to carry out his criminal activities. Blackwell will play Gordon, Banshee’s DA who is married to Lucas’ old flame, Carrie (Ivana Milicevic).

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: FOX leveled a one-two punch Thursday winning the A18-49 demo with a 3.7/11, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol handily won the time period at 4.2/13 followed by CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship between Wisconsin and Syracuse at 2.2/8. FOX’s new series Touch was #1 during 9p at 3.3/9 while CBS’ NCAA Basketball coverage was next at 2.7/8. CBS then had a winning pass at 10p with more of its NCAA Basketball Championship, this time between Cincinnati and Ohio State at 2.6/7 and Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar moved into second place at 1.8/5.
