After head-to-head battles with each other for at least two years, AFTRA took a step toward reconciliation with SAG Saturday by voting to approve joint negotiations over their feature-primetime agreement on October 1. Roberta Reardon, AFTRA’s president said recent talks between the two unions have cemented the decision by AFTRA to join up with SAG again. “I applaud the National Board for taking this important step forward today following our productive discussions with our counterparts at Screen Actors Guild earlier this week, specifically with respect to AFTRA’s heavy negotiating schedule for 2010,” said Reardon. “I look forward to continuing our work with SAG President Ken Howard and the leadership and members of our sister union as we move forward to bargain the strongest possible contracts for professional talent.” A SAG spokesperson echoed this Reardon’s sentiment by saying, “It’s terrific news for the memberships of both unions and we look forward to an effective negotiation.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC found its new Jim Rockford, casting Dermot Mulroney in the role of the roguish detective in the upcoming remake of Rockford Files. In the 1970s original TV series James Garner starred as Jim Rockford. This will be Mulroney’s first regular TV role, though he appeared in several episodes of Friends in 2003. Mulroney has primarily starred in numerous films, most notably in My Best Friend’s Wedding with Julia Roberts. NBC’s Rockford Files was written by David Shore, creator of House; he is executive producing along with Steve Carell.

Actress/comedienne Janeane Garofalo was tapped for CBS’ Untitled Medical Drama from John Wells, cites EW. Garofalo, who joins previously announced cast mates Amy Smart and Rachelle Lefevre, will play Angel, the chief nurse and operations manager and the go-to person of the operation involving a team of medical professionals who travel the US helping those in desperate straits.

Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) landed a role on CBS’ upcoming remake of Hawaii Five-O, playing Kona Kalakaua, niece of squad member Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim from ABC’s Lost).

NBC is bringing back Last Comic Standing for a seventh season this summer with Craig Robinson as host for the new edition. Robinson also plays Darryl on NBC’s The Office.

Two veteran actors, Dennis Farina and John Ortiz will next appear in HBO’s horse-racing themed pilot Luck. The project is from Michael Mann and David Milch about the world of horse racing and gambling. Farina will play Gus Economou, chauffeur and bodyguard to character Ace Bernstein; and Ortiz will play Turo Escalante, a talented horse trainer with a rough background.

Julianne Moore, better known today as an Oscar-nominated film actress, is in talks to reprise her dual role on the CBS daytime drama, As the World Turns, cites EW. Moore got her start in acting on the soap in 1985 playing half-sisters Frannie and Sabrina Hughes and after winning a Daytime Emmy in 1988 departed the show. At this point, ATWT producers have not outlined how Moore will be brought into the show’s script. ATWT is set to end its 54-year run this September. ATWT helped launch the film careers of many other actors such as Meg Ryan in the early ’80s, Marisa Tomei from 1983-1985, Parker Posey 1991-1992, Dana Delany in 1981 and Martin Sheen from 1965-1970 among others.

Casting Call: A new show, with the working title New You, is looking for shy girls who are tired of sitting on the sidelines and ready to find their dream man. This show will be inspiring and with the help of a celebrity mentor, the selected woman will gain confidence and step into the spotlight. If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to be on the show, visit www.newtvcasting.com or call 818-325-6920. Interested applicants can also send an email to [email protected].

Casting Call: An upcoming new television series with an inspirational theme for a major cable network is seeking families who are experiencing hard economic times and are presently down on their luck. The chosen families for this series will be given a fresh start on life with a new home, new jobs and relocated to another state.
