Cynopsis: Sports
03/12/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Launched ten years ago and now worth as much as $3 billion, the YES Network continues to be the most-watched regional sports network in the country. Tomorrow night the channel will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a two-hour special dubbed 10 Years of YES that will recap the greatest moments in the history of the network, drawing from YES’ Yankees coverage, as well as its Nets coverage, and recall the names, faces and stories from the past decade.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with YES Network COO Ray Hopkins about the growth of the network, its culture with the Yankees and how the channel changed television.

On the channel’s accomplishments in a decade: One of the things when you have an iconic brand like the Yankees, is that it allows you to be first in a lot of different initiatives. A lot of these initiatives have picked up steam, and others we are still learning from. For example, in 2005 we did our first Yankee game in high definition on YES Network and then we were one of the first regional networks to offer a 24/7 high definition channel. That obviously is something that has taken off and we were at the forefront of being able to deliver that. An initiative that we were first in as well but has not picked up stream, but still may is 3D. We were the first ones to do a 3D baseball game in July ’10, with the Yankees and Mariners. It was phenomenal in terms of look and feel and experience of it. But because of the industry, both from a television manufacturing side as well as on the distribution side, 3D has not met its truest potential. The jury is still out on whether that will happen or not. Streaming is another area where we were the first on. Now, TV Everywhere is hot these days.

On celebrating ten years: We are running a two-hour show, a retrospective of the ten years that YES has been on-air. It’s going to be a roundtable discussion with a number of our talent, including Michael Kay, Ian Eagle and a number of others recounting, telling stories, looking at footage. We can’t wait to air it.

On the corporate culture: Instead of asking our employees to manage people, we ask them to be doers, rather than managers. That’s one of the things I love about working here at the YES Network, in that we have this global brand in the Yankees and yet we are nimble enough and make things happen without going through a lot of the red tape that you see in a lot of the large media companies. We can take ideas as they are created and see them to fruition, ideas that could get bogged down in the bureaucracy at another organization. We want to be the gold standard of delivering games to fans.

On his favorite broadcast memory from the network: There have been a lot of great memories, but I would say probably number one is Jeter’s 3000th hit, just because it was Saturday afternoon against Tampa and he would up getting a base hit in the first inning, and then he came up in his second at bat and hit a home run. For a guy that really is not known to be a home run hitter to do that and go on and have a five hit game and drive in the game-winning RPI in the eighth inning. It was one of those magical days.

On the Air

On to the tournament… after selections were completed for the men’s NCAA Tournament, truTV returns for its sophomore year of action to tip off the game with Mississippi Valley St./Western Kentucky and BYU/Iona locked in for Tuesday beginning at 6:40p while Lamar/Vermont and California/USF square off on Wednesday. CBS Sports and Turner Sports will combine to air a live exclusive joint interview of President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron on truTV on Tuesday at during halftime of the first game which starts at 6:30p, from the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First Four series in Dayton, Ohio. CBS Sports’ Clark Kelloggwill conduct the interview, marking his third time interviewing President Obama. Kellogg will join CBS Sports lead play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and Turner Sports’ Steve Kerr to call the first two games of the First Four on the channel.

NBC Sports’ coverage of the third round of WGC-Cadillac Championship on Saturday drew a 2.2 overnight rating/5 share, for a 57% spike over from last year’s third round and tied 2009 as the best Saturday overnight for the tournament since 2007, when Tiger Woods last won at Doral.

Golf Channel will bring footage from the WGC-Cadillac Championship to today’s new episode of Down the Stretch at 11p, looking at the final 24 hours at the tournament through the eyes of Justin Rose (who won), Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy as well as Brandt Snedeker. The episode will feature multiple interviews with the leaders as they prepare for Sunday’s final round, as well as unique camera angles and a behind-the-scenes perspective on the highlights and interviews from Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy attending Saturday night’s Miami Heat game

Voting for NBA TV’s Fan Night presented by Sprint selected the Heat/Magic matchup as the showcased game for tomorrow at 7p. TheAutoTrader.com Pregame Showtips off coverage with host Vince Cellini and analysts Brent Barry and Chris Webber at6:30p.

In a move to help lock down a TV deal, Padres Vice Chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad has withdrawn his application to transfer control of the club, according to the AP, stating “With Opening Day less than one month away, [chairman] John Moores and I believe our top priority is to ensure that Padres fans will be able to watch broadcasts of what we believe is an exciting baseball team.” Two years remain for Moorad to officially complete his purchase of the franchise and the team is all but set to partner with the upcoming Fox Sports San Diego to televise exhibition games and regular-season games.

The WAC has tapped Jeff Hurd as the interim commissioner of the conference. Hurd previously served as senior associate commissioner for external affairs and replaces Karl Benson, who left the WAC to become commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference last month.

Grand Prix Entertainment and USA Rugby announced an extension of their U.S. Exclusive Sanction and License Agreement for a second six-year term, running through 2018. The partnership grants Grand Prix the rights to own and operate USA Rugby sanctioned Professional Rugby Sevens, including broadcast distribution rights across all media for both indoor and outdoor professional rugby sevens leagues and/or tournaments.

Tennis Channel is offering its own version of brackets, with more than 120 live hours from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., and the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami this month. The channel is slating daylong telecast windows and early round-through-semifinal coverage at each 12-day tournament to deliver more than 325 hours of match coverage across both events. The action began last Saturday and continues through Sunday, April 1.
