CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

06/07/04

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 7, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

It’s been quite a weekend.  Smarty Jones lost (and the winner apologized), Tampa Bay won. We lost President Ronald Reagan and we recognized the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Ernie Els won, as did Avenue Q, Harry Potter is a hit (again), and we saw the finale of The Sopranos.  Quite a weekend.

The national funeral for President Reagan is scheduled for Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral. A&E will present a one hour obituary Biography of President Ronald Reagan on Tuesday, tomorrow night at 8pm.

Premiere:   For Love or Money, NBC 9pm

Life & Style, the younger hipper version of ABC’s The View, featuring four women discussing events of the day and items of interest, has been given a firm go by Sony.  And according to Broadcasting & Cable, a handful of new clearances have been added to the list – KCAL/LA; WCIU/Chicago; KYW/Phil; KBHK/San Francisco; and WBZ/Boston. Thus far, no clearance in New York, though among the top 20 markets, Life & Style is cleared in 17 markets.

NBC debuted its newest sitcom, Come to Papa on Thursday night to a 2.9/10 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Reserach, maintaining a goodly portion (94%) of its Friends lead-in.  The show won its time period in the demo, with its closest competition coming for Fox which was airing the movie Scream 2.

Bravo has ordered up a new reality series for this fall called Manhunt: The Search for America’s Most Gorgeous Male Model. 8 eps have been ordered.  Think America’s Next Top Model for men – 15 unknowns, one winner who gets a modeling contract. Produced by Stuart Krasnow (Average Joe, Cold Turkey).  Speaking of reality, you’ve perhaps heard of Bravo’s new show which debuts tomorrow night called Blow Out (a business reality a la The Restaurant, set in a Beverly Hills salon). Like The Restaurant, American Express has signed on as an ad partner, though details of the deal were not disclosed.

Weekend Box Office Estimates: June 4-6, 2004

National Geographic Channel tonight (9p) will air a live telecast from onboard the Ronald Brown, which stands above the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic, as well as from 12,000 feet under the Atlantic Ocean at the site of the Titanic.

Obituaries are always tough to write, and even more so when it’s someone you knew. Lou Verruto, husband, sailor, drummer and President/General Manager of LIN-owned WIVB/Buffalo, died of natural causes last Thursday.  He was 56. Lou had been with WIVB since 1996; prior to Buffalo he was the GSM at WTNH/New Haven.  Lou started at WTNH as an Account Executive, which is when I met him. He had a sailor’s mouth, a relaxed feet-on-the-desk style, and a hearty laugh you’d not soon forget.  He also had an unmatched generosity of spirit and a glint in his eye which always made you believe he was up to no good, and often he was.  There was one other look Lou had, which you only saw when he was talking about his wife Darlene, a look that could melt your heart.  He often threatened to toss all this TV stuff, take Darlene and go to Europe to be a drummer in some beatnik-type band.  We’re all better for his staying. He will be missed terribly.  Services will be held Wednesday in Schenectedy; donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the American Hearst Assoc.

BIAP Systems, a developer of hybrid applications for digital cable and broadband, is powering up its marketing division with the addition of two senior executives: Dan Levinson has been named EVP/Marketing, and Mark Pruneau has been named VP/Marketing.  The announcement was made by Tim Peters, CEO/BIAP Systems.  Dan will be based in New York and Mark in Plano.  Glad to see everyone is doing something constructive.

FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide named Alice Whiteley as Director/Acquisitions and Development.  She has worked as a consultant for the last half year and was in the same role at Ealing Family Entertainment.  She will be based in London and report to Natalie Tydeman, SVP/Business Diversification, FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide.
