~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Upfront Update:  On Friday, the upfront business started to percolate for CBS with the network apparently claiming larger increases than that of FOX which reportedly got a price boost in the +10% to +11% level.  Before its activity began, CBS was asking for a +18% price bump, though is making deals reportedly in the +14% to +15% CPM range.  FOX completed its upfront deals last Thursday.  ABC also is working on deals, so far reportedly in the low double digit price increase range.

The cast of Jersey Shore traveled to Florence, Italy to film its fourth season now slated to premiere on MTV August 4 at 10p.  Even before the fourth season opens, Jersey Shore begins production on season five this month going back to where it all began, on the beach at Seaside Heights. MTV also airs a one-hour Jersey Shore special on July 28 at 10p documenting the rise of the show and its cast into a pop culture phenomenon.   Jersey Shore is produced by 495 Productions.

Today, The Weather Channel (TWC) opens its Extreme Weather Week where each night the network counts down the most extreme weather events this year in addition to the top five hurricanes, tornadoes and other dire weather.  Each night, TWC will air four half-hour shows under a different theme: Monday and Thursday: Top 5 Extreme Weather Events of 2011; Tuesday: Top 5 Hurricanes; Wednesday: Top 5 Tornadoes; and Friday: Top 5 Worst Weather.  Encore presentations of the shows will air at 11p.

After some back and forth, it now appears Cheryl Cole will be joining the cast of The X Factor here in the US.  It was reported just a week ago she was dropped from the show – reasons included her accent may be difficult for Americans to understand, and that she would be returning to the UK version of the show. None of those reports were officially confirmed. Simon Cowell’s camp told the BBC News website he was in talks with the US producers Fox and FremantleMedia to bring Cole back.  She is expected to return to the show later this week, joining her fellow judges in New Jersey for auditions.

Legendary actor James Arness died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 88.  Mr. Arness was best known as the dutiful lawman Marshal Dillon of Dodge City, Kansas on the series Gunsmoke, one of the longest-running scripted programs in television’s history.  Mr. Arness starred in Gunsmoke for 20 years, from 1955 to 1975. The role and the real-life man at times merged into one as Mr. Arness seemed made for his part on Gunsmoke whose own steady and stoic personality was much like that of Marshall Dillon.  During his time on Gunsmoke, Mr. Arness was nominated for three Emmy Awards.  Over his fifty-year acting career, he also appeared in nearly fifty films and television movies, mostly western-themed.  He appeared in thirty films before his mentor John Wayne turned down the Dillon role and recommended him instead.  Later following Gunsmoke, Mr. Arness appeared in such television movies as The Alamo (1987) and Red River (1988) as well as the miniseries How the West Was Won (1977) and the crime series McCain’s Law (1981).  He also starred in five Gunsmoke television movie sequels from 1987 to 1993.  Mr. Arness’ younger brother was the actor Peter Graves, best known for his iconic role on TV series Mission: Impossible and numerous movies including Airplane! (1980). Mr. Graves died in 2010.  Mr. Arness is survived by his second wife, Janet and their son Rolf Arness; a stepson, Jim; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Preceding Mr. Arness in death was a daughter, Jenny, from his second marriage and a stepson, Craig, he adopted from his first marriage.

Clarification:  An item we ran un last week in Cynopsis regarding PBS‘ plans to add commercials within its primetime format needs correction and further clarification.  The network is not introducing commercials, but rather is looking into repositioning some it’s program elements, thereby providing a longer content segment up front, and improve audience flow between programs.  Those natural breaks within the program content would consist only of programming and/or station promos, not underwriting announcements.  The overall amount of program content would not be effected whatsoever, remaining at 53+ minutes per hour.
