CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Monday, June 6, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing. The word is out – NBC is cutting prices. According to several sources, NBC began writing upfront business in earnest last Friday, much of it at a flat to 2%+ decrease from last year’s CPMs. While only about half of its upfront business has been done, several analysts have pegged NBC’s final take in the upfront to drop from last year’s $2.9 billion down to approx $2.1-$2.4 billion. Premieres Tonight: * NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
Paramount Network Television has signed a two year 7-figure development deal with Eunette Boone, creator/exec prod of UPN’s One on One and its spinoff series Cuts. The deal calls for Boone to continue overseeing both series while developing new projects for the studio under her shingle Daddy’s Girl Prods. Also signing a two year seven figure development deal is Regina Stewart, co-exec prod on Still Standing, with Touchstone Television. Stewart will develop comedies for the studio, as well as taken on the duties of consulting producer on ABC’s midseason sitcom Crumbs. * MORE GOOD STUFF *
VH1 picked up the off net rights to America’s Next Top Model, acquiring the first three seasons as well as the next two upcoming seasons. That’s a total of 77 eps, and per Variety the license fee was $75k per ep. VH1 kicked off its new acquisition with a marathon of Top Model last Friday. Model is distributed by King World – the same folks who just wrapped up the Survivor deal with OLN for a reported $60k per ep. The cable net has also picked up the as yet unaired reality series Tommy Lee Goes to College, scheduled to debut on NBC August 16. The fee for this series is $100,000 per ep for the 6 eps, also according to Variety. UPN Program Change: As of June 15, Veronica Mars will move to Wednesdays at 9p on UPN. As jurors resume their second day of deliberations in the Michael Jackson case, Court TV is at the ready to break in to regularly programming to provide full coverage when the jury has reached their decision, and continuing their coverage through their 10pm programming. The final hour of prime will be a Nancy Grace Live special on the Jackson news. Thus far, viewers have only seen her in flashback, but during the second season of ABC’s Lost Michelle Rodriguez will become a regular castaway cast member, in the role of Ana-Lucia Cortez who has a pre-crash connection with Jack. It is round five for The Motion Picture Association of America, which has filed yet another round of lawsuits, in conjunction with major movie studios, against online users who have allegedly illegally downloaded movies on the internet through peer-to-peer file sharing programs. Says John G. Malcolm, SVP/Director, Worldwide Anti-Piracy: “While we don’t like suing individuals and would prefer to see people spend their money buying movie tickets, buying or renting legal DVDs or enjoying films through a legitimate video-on-demand service, rather than spending their money hiring lawyers, we will go as many rounds as these Internet movie thieves want until we knock out every last one. Our message is clear: You can click, but you can’t hide.” Malcolm underlined, “Our goal is to make an example of these people so everyone in their neighborhoods realizes that those who steal movies online are not above the law,” and also said, “These lawsuits are helping us raise awareness about the consequences of stealing movies using the Internet.” In related MPAA news, LA law enforcement shut down an illegal movie duplication lab in LA last week. Officials arrested three people who and recovered thousands of dollars in illegally duplicated copyrighted materials. And the top awards at the 59th Annual Tony Awards went to: Doubt for Best Play, Spamalot for Best Musical, Glengarry Glen Ross for Best Revival of a Play, La Cage aux Folles for Best Revival of a Musical and Billy Crystal 700 Sundays for Best Special Theatrical Event. Edward Albee was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Light in the Piazza won a half dozen awards including Best Score which went to Adam Guettel, Richard Rodger’s grandson. Best speech of the night (most were enormously dreary) came from Doug Hughes, who won for Director of a Play (Doubt), the son of actors Barnard Hughes and Helen Stenborg who thanked his parents for their DNA. Two funniest moments of the event — Billy Crystal’s opening host monologue only to learn he wasn’t hosting (Hugh Jackman quite capably fill that part), and Christina Applegate’s entrance to deliver the Tony for Best Choreography. She unexpected, tho planned, fall into the pit – she climbed out rather undelicately, and continued. A personal favorite to win – Liev Schreiber in Glengarry Glen Ross for Best Featured Actor in a Play. It seems Viacom may be interested in picking up several cable channels from the UK’s Telewest Global Inc.. Preliminary interest was shown in Flextech’s Living and Challenge according to the Wall Street Journal and London’s Sunday Times. Rumor has it that the two channels may be up for grabs due to Telewest and NTL Corporation’s merger. The two could bring in as much as 800 million pounds. Your responses to these surveys are always useful and often incorporated into the Cynopsis editions. As always, you are not asked to identify yourself, nor are there any clever behind-the-scenes ways for me to know who participated in the survey. The goal is to get your suggestions to help us make Cynopsis better. Thanks for the help — Cyn. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has appointed his staff: Donna Gregg has been named Bureau Chief, making the move from PBS, where she was VP/Legal and Regulatory Affairs. And Roy Stewart has been named Senior Deputy Chief, under Deborah Klein, named Deputy Chief. Stewart moves over from the Office of Broadcast License Policy; and Klein had been acting Media Bureau Chief. In addition to his current responsibilities as SEVP/CSO, Univision Communications Inc. has named Andrew W. Hobson to the additional role of CFO. Andrew is replacing Jeffrey Hinson in that position. He will continue to report to A. Jerrold Perenchio, Chairman/CEO and will be based in LA. Just a little over a year after accepting the post, Museum of Television & Radio President Stuart Brotman has left the building. Brotman was hired following the death of long-time President Robert Batscha. No news yet on Brotman’s replacement, or his reasons for leaving. Casting Call: A new series for TLC produced by Evolution USA is seeking families, work groups, couples, pairs, whoever, whose bickering is so bad they can no longer accomplish the simplest of jobs or function efficiently. For instance, two girlfriends are no longer on speaking terms after trying to plan her wedding; a couple can’t stop arguing long enough to pick a color to paint the kitchen; an office group is so at odds that work is no longer getting done at all! Casting is kicking off in LA – for info contact Joanna Shapiro at * RATINGS *
