NBC‘s Community is getting back to its roots. Dan Harmon, who created the series, and writer Chris McKenna are expected to return to the show. Harmon is finalizing a deal with producer Sony Pictures Television to come back as showrunner. McKenna, who left in 2012 after inking an overall pact with Universal Television, is also formalizing his return. Both deals are expected to close soon.

 ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

There’s another all gals talk show on the horizon. The Real, which will feature five women of color, is coming to FOX owned TV stations this summer. Tamera Mowry (Tia & Tamera), Tamar Braxton (Braxton Family Values), Adrienne Bailon (The Cheetah Girls), Jeannie Mai (How Do I Look?) and comedian Loni Love will comprise the panel.  FOX has yet determine the show’s debut date or which markets or time periods the show will air. Telepictures is producing the project.

More retro TV? Garth Ancier, founding programmer of FOX and The WB, is reportedly pitching pay-TV operators to carry four channels that would air shows from yesteryear; specifically programs from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. According to Variety, Ancier’s Zeus Media Partners hopes to launch the channels the second quarter of 2014 and would air the shows in high definition.

After weeks of speculating, the news has been confirmed. Neither Mariah Carey nor Nicki Minaj will be back for American Idol‘s 13th season. Carey confirmed her exit from the FOX reality show on Twitter, re-posting a message from her publicity firm PMK-BNC. “W/ global success of “#Beautiful” (#1 in 30+ countries so far) @Mariah Carey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol http://mariahcarey.com” Minaj followed suit posting, “Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!”

Syfy continues to ramp up its reality competition programming with the premiere of Exit.  Based on the Japanese hit Dero! and hosted by Curt Doussett (America’s Lost Treasures, Hazard Pay), the six episode series premieres Tuesday, June 4 at 10p. In each episode, four teams battle to escape four mind-bending rooms. The winning team must beat the clock, while solving rapid-fire brain games, for a chance to win $10,000. Exit is produced by Smart Dog Media in association with Zig Zag Productions.

~ FYI… ~

Curious to know how NBC‘s canceled series, Ready for Love wraps? On Tuesday, June 4, the dating show’s finale will be available on NBC.com and HULU, with episodes also airing on E! and Style networks.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Judy Greer is adding another FX gig to her resume. The actress, who’s part of the voice cast of Archer, is set to co-star in the network’s Andrew Gurland pilot. She’ll play Lina, wife to Nat Faxon‘s Russ Bowman, in the comedy about a couple who gets along great everywhere but the bedroom.

ABC‘s Suburgatory is losing two cast regulars. Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee will be leaving the comedy series for the third season, although there is a possibility they may return as guest stars. Tudyk, who plays George’s best friend, Noah, and Lee, who portrays Tessa’s high school counselor Mr. Wolfe, may return as guest stars. Both have been with the show since its first season.

Matt Smith is leaving BBC‘s Doctor Who after four years. Smith, who first made his debut as the series’ 11th Doctor in 2010, will depart at the end of this year after starring in the 50th Anniversary special, airing November 23 and the Christmas special. The search for the show’s next Doctor is on.
