Good morning. It’s Monday, June 28, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing.
The Senate Communications Subcommittee will hold a hearing on July 15 regarding Nielsen Media Research’s LPM service. That announcement was made by Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Conrad Burns (R-Montana), who also urged Nielsen to stop its service in NY and further delay the rollout in both LA and Chicago until the hearing and the subcommittee’s review is complete. Nielsen has said they have not received an invitation to testify at the hearing, and has no plans to halt or delay LPM service.
The show hasn’t even made its official network debut and it already has two spinoff series. Wife Swap is scheduled to premiere on ABC on September 29 and the network has ordered up Husband Swap (could’ve seen that one coming) and Boss Swap.
Spike TV has ordered up a new series called Ultimate Fighting Championship to kick off in January. The net has ordered 13eps of the martial arts competition which features 20 competitors all looking to win a spot in the UFC league. Competition includes three different martial arts – kickboxing, karate and judo. Production begins in the fall.
TLC has ordered a second season of its series For Better or for Worse (Nash Entertainment). Season #2 will consist of 30 original episodes. And, according to Television Week, King World has picked up the international distribution rights to the show.
Jackie Kallen – boxing manager who was the inspiration behind the movie Against the Ropes – has joined up with Mark Burnett Prods. on The Contender, set to debut on NBC midseason, according to Hollywood Reporter. Jackie’s role in the show is to oversee the 16 contenders, making sure their training and eating as they should as well as provide support as needed.
MTV has begun production on what it calls television’s first reality drama, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. The show sets its cameras on seven teenagers – and follows them through their high school lives including choosing and visiting colleges, senior prom, etc. What perhaps makes this show a little bit different is the teens will never acknowledge the cameras, will not provide any ongoing narrative themselves, no confessions, etc., but rather the cameras serve as a fourth wall. The show is set to premiere on September 14.

The US Senate on Friday voted on several bills including two concerning the consequences of those infringing on copyrights. In a unanimous vote on Friday, the US Senate ratified the Artists’ Rights & Theft Prevention Act, legislation that if it should become law, could send individuals caught recording a movie in a movie house to the big house for 3-10 years if convicted. The Senate also unanimously passed Protecting Intellectual Rights Against Theft and Expropriation Act, aka the Pirate Act. The Pirate Act provides alterations in the copyright laws allowing the US Justice Dept to file civil suits against individuals charged with file swapping. The entertainment industry loses an estimated $3b each year from piracy, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. While the Recording Industry Association of America celebrated Friday’s vote on the Pirate Act, others worry that such laws could restrict the creation of legitimate ways to share copyrighted materials. Votes were also taken on bills relating to identity theft, and the spreading of spywear. Also on Friday a Congressional Committee gave its endorsement to The Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act, also known as the Spy Act, which would make it illegal for software co.’s to download spywear onto consumer computers without first notifying you. And the Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act, which would enable harsher punishments to those found guilty of identity theft.
