The man behind the iconic role of detective Lt. Columbo, Peter Falk, died Thursday at the age of 83. Mr. Falk had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia for several years and died at home in Beverly Hills. From 1968 until 2003, he portrayed the rumpled-looking though instinctively intelligent L.A. homicide detective in a number of Columbo telepics produced by Universal Television for NBC and later for ABC. Each segment of Columbo was about 90 minutes to two hours in length and over the years they featured well-known Hollywood guest stars including Ray Milland, Myrna Loy, Don Ameche, Janet Leigh, Faye Dunaway and Roddy McDowell among many others. The Columbo segments also were a training point for up-and-coming writers and directors including Steven Spielberg, Stephen J. Cannell and Steven Bochco. Mr. Falk won four Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Lt. Columbo and won another Emmy previously for The Dick Powell Theatre presentation of The Price of Tomatoes in 1962. His career wasn’t focused only on television. He made his Off Broadway debut in 1956 in Moliere’s Don Juan and moved quickly to the Broadway production of St. Joan in 1957 followed by other stage roles. Mr. Falk, despite having an artificial eye after his real one was removed due to a malignant tumor when he was a toddler, sought roles in the movies and in the late 1950s landed work in films like The Bloody Brood and Pretty Boy Floyd among others. He earned two Oscar nominations for his role as a dangerous gangster in Murder, Inc. (1960) and for Frank Capra’s Pocketful of Miracles playing opposite Bette Davis. His work in the movies was steady during the 1960s with such vehicles as Pressure Point, The Balcony, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Robin and the Seven Hoods. He later turned to dramatic television appearing on Studio One, Robert Montgomery Presents, Omnibus, The Untouchables, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Twilight Zone and Naked City. During the years he played Columbo, Mr. Falk went back and forth acting in several more movies as well as arguing with Universal about leaving the Columbo series altogether. He returned to the Columbo role again when ABC brought back the series in 1989, airing several installment per year through 1993 followed by a few more until the last one in 2003 titled “Columbo Likes the Night Life.” During the late 1970s until 2007, some of Mr. Falk’s movie titles included The Brink’s Job (1978), All the Marbles (1981), Cookie (1989), Made (2001) and Next (2007). Mr. Falk is survived by his wife of 34 years, actress Shera Danese and two daughters from a previous marriage.
Former CNN sportscaster, Nick Charles, 64, died on Saturday. Mr. Charles’ broadcasting career spanned 40 years and he was involved in coverage of many top sporting events including the Super Bowl, the Olympics and the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Charles joined CNN as the cable news channel launched in 1980, becoming one of its first on-air personalities and was host of CNN Sports Tonight with Fred Hickman. From 1986 and through the 1990s, Mr. Charles was host of Turner’s coverage of The Goodwill Games. He exited CNN in 2001 and became host of his own show, Page One with Nick Charles. Thereafter, he joined Showtime in 2001 as commentator and boxing analyst for some of the premium network’s most memorable fights including Buster Douglas v. Mike Tyson; Tyson v. Evander Holyfield (the ear biting incident); and the Roberto Duran match with Sugar Ray Leonard. In 2007, Mr. Charles won the Boxing Writer’s Association’s broadcaster award and in 2008 he was the recipient of the Sam Taub Award. His illness forced him to take a leave of absence from Showtime in 2009 and Mr. Charles returned only once more to television, making an appearance last March on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. Mr. Charles is survived by his wife, Cory and their daughter, Giovanna; as well as three children from two previous marriages.

Before ABC’s All My Children signs off this fall, Carol Burnett will appear in a handful of episodes reprising her role as Verla Grubbs in September. Burnett’s character first appeared on the soap in 1983 as the long-lost daughter of Langley Wallingford, played by the late actor Louis Edmonds. Burnett was back on the soap in 1995 for AMC’s 25th anniversary and in 2005 for its 35th birthday in addition to hosting AMC’s 25th anniversary primetime special. Other former AMC stars returning before the soap ends on September 23 include Josh Duhamel, Eva La Rue, Cady McClain and Thorsten Kaye.
After appearing as a guest star in NBC’s The Office season finale, James Spader is in negotiations with the network to apparently join the sitcom’s eighth season next fall. Spader, as character Robert California, would not actually replace Steve Carell as Dunder Mifflin’s manager but instead take over as CEO of Dunder Mifflin, replacing Kathy Bates who also stars in Harry’s Law on NBC. At this time, no deal has been worked out with Spader and no scripts written to include his character for the upcoming eighth season which commences production in approximately a month.
Lisa Edelstein (House) booked a multi-episode run on CBS’ The Good Wife for the drama’s third season. Edelstein will play a lawyer and an avid poker player who has a past with Will (Josh Charles).
All My Children alum Sydney Penny joins NBC’s Days of Our Lives for a seven-episode arc this summer, playing a doctor in the rehab clinic helping Carly with a drug addiction. Penny first appears on the daytime drama August 30.
Lauren Cohan (Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and Chuck) added to the cast of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Cohan’s recurring role is that of Maggie Greene, the smart and self-sufficient daughter of farm owner Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) and love interest for Glenn (Steven Yuen).
Jim Uhls (Fight Club) selected to write the HBO/BBC Worldwide Productions’ sci fi miniseries Year Zero from Trent Reznor. The project would be an adaptation of Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails’ 2007 album, a recording that criticizes the US government and offers a dystopian view of the year 2022. Year Zero is a co-production of HBO and BBC Worldwide Productions.
Casting Call: Spike TV seeks people who want a first-time or an additional tattoo by participating in a new tattoo competition reality series, InkMaster. The network is gathering some of America’s best tattoo artists to compete and the show needs people to be human canvases. If you live in the tri-state area and are 27+ years old, send an email to: [email protected] along with a description, a recent photo and your tattoo design idea and why you want this design. Interviews will happen this week in New York City and filming for the show begins in July and August in the NYC area. InkMaster is from Original Media, the production company producing LA Ink, NY Ink, Miami Ink and The Rachel Zoe Project among others.
