Late last week, ABC approved a fifth season of Wipeout and added Vanessa Minnillo (MTV’s Total Request Live) as the reality show’s new co-host.  The renewal notice encompasses the winter and summer editions of Wipeout for the 2011-2012 season.  Minnillo will officially join the show for the next winter Wipeout replacing co-host Jill Wagner; John Anderson and John Henson remain in place as hosts. 

This summer, MTV brings back its series True Life profiling real-life stories of young people at a crossroad in their lives.  True Life opens a new season this Thursday with double episodes starting with “I’m Allergic to Everything” at 10p followed by “I’m No Longer Gay” at 11p.  Other scheduled episodes include two more airing back-to-back on June 30 at 10p and 11p, and single eps on July 7, 14 and 21 at 10p.

CBS’ comedy series Rules of Engagement enters into off-network syndication and Sony Pictures Television has sold the sitcom to local stations in the top three markets of the US: Tribune’s WPIX/New York; CBS’ KCAL/Los Angeles; and Weigel’s WCIU/Chicago.  Additional station groups picking up the comedy are Belo and Meredith.  Rules of Engagement, from Happy Madison Productions and CBS Television Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television, cleared to date in 45% of the US for a fall 2012 roll out.

Independent distributor, Cineflix International Distribution sold more than 475 hours of factual, factual entertainment and other formats during the first six months of this year in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) including sales to broadcasters and distributors in Russia, Ukraine and Estonia.

Optomen International reports selling package deals involving various television series featuring Chef Gordon Ramsay: 

  • Viasat in Slovenia licensed Ramsay’s Best Restaurant as well as seasons 3 and 4 of Kitchen Nightmares USA, both seasons of Gordon’s Great Escape and the UK and US versions of the real-time cooking show, Cookalong
  • Serbia’s broadcaster PRVA/B92 picked up Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares licensing both the complete UK and US versions totaling 80 hours. 
  • Prima TV in Czech Republic okayed a third Kitchen Nightmares format deal after two previous series.
  • Optomen International also ushers in two new series: Mary’s Fashion Victims with three one-hour eps which is an Optomen production for Channel 4 debuting this September; and Superior Interiors with Kelly Hoppen, a new production for UK’s Channel Five with five one-hour eps due to premiere this fall.


Casting Call:  FOX’s American Idol launches its 11th national search for undiscovered talent beginning June 28 in St. Louis.  Other subsequent audition dates have been set for July 2 in Portland, OR; July 8 in San Diego; July 15 in Pittsburgh; July 22 in Charleston, SC; July 29 in Denver; and August 26 in Houston.  Complete audition information, including application forms and requirements, are available at  American Idol is produced by 19 Entertainment, a unit of CKX, Inc. and FremantleMedia North America Inc.


Thursday A18-49 Analysis: FOX won by a narrow margin Thursday night at 1.6/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance finished first at 8p with a 2.2/8 while ABC’s Wipeout repeat and the average of CBS’ encore comedies The Big Bang Theory and Rules of Engagement tied for #2 at 1.6/6 each.  At 9p, a second rerun helping of Wipeout on ABC was #1 at 2.1/6 followed by Univision’s Triunfo del Amor at 1.7/5.  CBS and a repeat of The Mentalist topped at 10p with a 1.4/4 and the premiere of Univision’s El Equipo moved into the second spot with a 1.1/3.

Paul Lee, President, ABC Entertainment Group revealed a half dozen recent promotions and key staffing changes in the ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios divisions:

  • John Saade upped, effective immediately, to EVP/Alternative Series and Late-Night Programming, ABC Entertainment where he will manage the network’s primetime alternative and reality series as well as late-night programming.  John reports to Paul Lee.
  • Vicki Dummer moves into the role of SVP/Current Series and Specials, ABC Entertainment.  Vicki will spearhead all current series and special programming for ABC’s primetime, reporting to Paul Lee. 
  • In addition, Lynn Barrie, formerly the SVP/Current Programming will become SVP/Comedy Development, ABC Entertainment, reporting to Samie Falvey, SVP/Comedy Development, ABC Entertainment.
  • Patrick Moran bumped to SVP/Head of Creative Development, ABC Studios where he will oversee all creative development efforts on behalf of the studio.  Patrick reports to Barry Jossen, EVP, ABC Studios as well as an editorial line on creative to Paul Lee.
  • Amy Hartwick switches to SVP/Comedy Development, ABC Studios where she will report to Patrick Moran. 
  • Kevin Plunkett, formerly the SVP/Comedy Development, ABC Studios is departing the company to take on new opportunities.
