Good morning. It’s Monday, June 14, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing.
If you missed the final hole of the Buick Classic’s 3-hole playoff yesterday when ABC chose at 7p to cut to a repeat of America’s Funniest Videos, you may be glad to hear Sergio Garcia won the tournament. ABC’s deal with the PGA Tour is they are free to end their coverage at its scheduled end time – it does not have to stick with it until play has completed. Of course for a golf fan, that doesn’t make it right. A few highlights of that final playoff hole between Sergio Garcia, Rory Sabbatini and Padraig Harrington could be seen on ESPN. Saturday evening the network cut out on time as well, that is 6pm, with the final group still in the middle of the back nine. According to Mark Mandel, ABC Spokesman, “We stayed as long as we could. … When we can, we try in these circumstances to switch the programming, in this case over to ESPN or ESPN2. Obviously, they couldn’t accommodate. We’re very sorry about having to frustrate our viewers.” For a repeat of AFV? I don’t understand the problem.
While NBC’s Next Action Star debuts tonight, it will be repurposed and debut on GSN nine days after its bcst premiere. GSN will air all 10 eps. Produced by GRB Entertainment, the series has also been licensed to Sky One/UK, TVNZ/New Zealand and Sony’s AXN action nets.
Rainbow Entertainment Services has partnered with Miramax Films for the distribution rights to 86 Miramax films, 12 of which will be the bcst premieres. Titles include The Quiet American, The Barbarian Invasions and City of God, as well as part of the first network window to Cold Mountain (2010), and older titles such as Bridget Jones Diary, Chocolat, Cider House Rules and Good Will Hunting. The deal covers the trio of Rainbow Media cable networks – AMC, IFC, WE.
Season Finale: The WB’s Superstar USAon WB at 9 pm
Season Premiere: Next Action Star – NBC at 10p North Shore – Fox at 8p The Casino – Fox at 9p
Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy will return to NBC for 3 episodes starting June 30 at 8 pm. The episodes will remake twins, an ex-pro ice skater and a Johnny Depp wannabe.
A&E has ordered up 6 one hour eps of a new reality series called Interventions – yes, cameras watch as friends, family, seek to intervene with a person’s addiction, be it drugs, alcohol, gambling, shopping, video games, whatever. You’d think, bad enough to be the subject of an intervention; worse to have TV cameras in the room. In any case, A&E and GRB Entertainment are producing, and the series is likely to find airtime in 4th qtr this year, according to Variety.

Answer to yesterday’s Trivia Question: The character of Al Borland on Home Improvement was originally intended only for the pilot. The actor who was to play Tim’s sidekick was unavailable for the pilot shoot but was supposed to be a series regular. Who was that actor, and do you his character’s name? THE CHARACTER WAS GLEN, TIM’S SIDEKICK, AND WAS TO BE PLAYED BY STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY. Kudos to …. nobody? yikes.
