The death of beloved actor Andy Griffith last Tuesday at the age of 86 was felt by many.  Mr. Griffith, who played Sheriff Andy Taylor on the endearing television series The Andy Griffith Show which ran from 1960-1968 on CBS, was lauded by North Carolina’s Governor Beverly Perdue who said, “North Carolina has lost its favorite son.”  President Barack Obama said he was sad to learn of Mr. Griffith’s death and said in a statement, “A performer of extraordinary talent, Andy was beloved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footstep.” Ron Howard, who played Mr. Griffith’s son Opie on the comedy series, set in the fictional town of Mayberry, NC (which was believed to be based on Mr. Griffith’s own hometown of Mount Airy, NC) said via EW’s website, “He was fantastic.  There was a fantastic equilibrium between his love of laughter and jokes and funny stories and songs and all that, and then he could turn on a dime and be the utmost professional.”  In addition to making an impact with television audiences, Mr. Griffith is also remembered for his riveting performance in Elia Kazan’s film A Face in the Crowd (1957) playing opposite Patricia Neal.  He later played a small-town sheriff in an episode of the television series The Danny Thomas Show which led to The Andy Griffith Show.  Don Knotts, who had previously appeared with Mr. Griffith in the stage and screen versions of No Time for Sergeants and had seen The Danny Thomas Show episode, suggested to Mr. Griffith that his sheriff character would need a deputy side-kick.  Mr. Knotts joined the cast as the lovable but bungling Deputy Barney Fife, the role which won Mr. Knotts five Emmy Awards.   The Griffith-Knotts friendship continued strong until Mr. Knotts’ death in February 2006.  In 1968, The Andy Griffith Show was No. 1 in the ratings and that same year, Mr. Griffith decided to depart from the show.  A spin-off show, Mayberry R.F.D. continued without him featuring new and returning supporting characters before it ended in 1971.  In 1986, Mr. Griffith reprised his Andy Taylor role for a reunion TV movie, Return to Mayberry.  Mr. Griffith returned to series television in a second popular role as criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock in the show Matlock which first aired from 1986 until 1992 on NBC and then until May 1995 on ABC.  On Broadway, Mr. Griffith was nominated for two Tony awards, first in 1956 for his role in No Time for Sergeants and again in 1960 for the musical Destry Rides Again.  Also a recording artist, Mr. Griffith won a Grammy award in 1996 for his gospel album, I Love To Tell The Story.  Mr. Griffith is survived by his third wife, Cindi Knight Griffith whom he married in 1983 and two children from his first marriage.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will honor the late Andy Griffith with a night of his movies on July 18 beginning with A Face in the Crowd (1957) at 8p, followed by No Time for Sergeants (1958) at 1015p, then Hearts of the West (1975) at 1230a and Onionhead (1958) at 215a.

Veteran television producer, show creator and London native, Norman Felton died June 25 in Santa Barbara at the age of 99.  Mr. Felton was the co-creator of the classic TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and was the executive producer of the television version of Dr. Kildare.  While Mr. Felton served as president/CEO of MGM Television-based Arena Productions, he and Sam Rolfe created the spy drama The Man From U.N.C.L.E. starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum which ran on NBC from 1964 to 1968.  He also executive produced the short-lived spin-off series The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. starring Stefanie Powers.  Mr. Felton executive produced all 190 episodes of NBC’s Dr. Kildare which starred Richard Chamberlain and aired from 1960 to 1966.  Mr. Felton was involved as producer on several other series including a legal drama, Hawkins in 1973 starring Jimmy Stewart as well as Studio One in Hollywood, Pursuit, The Eleventh Hour, The Lieutenant, Strange Report and Executive Suite.  In 1997, Mr. Felton was the recipient of an Honorary Lifetime Membership Award from the Producers Guild of America.  Mr. Felton is survived by his children Julie and John; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson as well as his companion, Denise Aubuchon.  The family requests donations sent to Doctors Without Borders or the American Civil Liberties Union.
