Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07.08.13
Good morning. It’s Monday, July 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Save the date! The annual Cynopsis: Sports Business Summit is set to take place on Aug. 14 in NY, and will feature some of the biggest names driving sports today. In addition, we are holding our Women of Action cocktail event celebrating and discussing the impact women are having in the sports industry on Aug. 13. Register here: http://www.cynopsissportssummit.com/
The winner in the battle for Hulu is inching closer. Bidding for the streaming-media company was set to end on Friday. It’s been reported that Hulu has narrowed down its list of prospective bidders to DirectTV, The Chernin Group and Guggenheim Digital Media. Owned by Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast, Hulu earned $695 million in 2012 and the Hulu Plus service had four million paying users, according to the company.
Apple Inc. and Time Warner Cable Inc. are close to making a deal that will give subscribers of the cable provider access to channels via Apple TV, Bloomberg reports. This would be Apple TV’s first deal with a cable provider; it should be announced in the next few months. To help Apple negotiate with media and cable companies, it has hired Pete Distad away from his job as senior vice president in charge of marketing and distribution at Hulu.
Today, Weather.com‘s Weather Films is launching its first HD web series, Brink. This series of six two- to four-minute videos focuses on eco-heroes who are trying to protect animals from poachers, hunters, and human interference. “It’s hard to make something that you think is gorgeous and editorially great, but still be on budget. We didn’t accept a single shot that wasn’t going to be an exciting HD experience,” Weather.com’s Editor-in-Chief Neil Katz told Cynopsis. The first three episodes will be released on web and mobile, with the second three available on the Weather Channel as well. “We needed a unique way to try out ideas and the costs are much lower in digital,” says Katz. “Plus, we have such a big digital audience (about 47 million, according to ComScore), that doing it this way makes sense.” Advertising will be a combination of wallpaper, b-roll, ‘promercials’ and brand integrations. The fall slate will be sold as a cross platform. So far, Katz says that clients in the technology, auto, and outdoor categories have been expressing interest. The channel’s goals are lofty, he explains. “We see the site as being the official homepage of Mother Nature. We want people to stay with us to learn about more than whether or not you need a raincoat the next day.”
Yahoo! has signed on to be the first official digital partner for the red carpet and behind-the-scenes content during the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast Sunday, Sept. 22, live streaming the action before and after the six pound, 12.5 ounce statuettes are handed out. The plan is to stream the initial nominations announcement on July 18 as well as backstage live content during the event and from the Governors Ball afterward. In order to extend the program past the show in September, Yahoo! will also debut a special series, “An Evening With,” which will showcase the people behind hit TV series.
YouTube Channel Alchemy Networks and Bunim/Murray Productions, the creators of such reality television heavyweights as The Real World and Project Runway, have agreed to partner and produce an original series, BRKDWN, for Bounce TV that will premiere this fall. BRKDWN, a half hour show highlighting pop-culture news in the African-American community is currently seen online but will make its television debut in the fall.
Some classic 1980s NBC sitcoms are returning as digital comic books. Saved By The Bell, Punky Brewster, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, and Airwolf are on the list for Lion Forge Comics to re-create for digital comic book fans. They will be available later in the year via Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and Apple’s iBooks.
Amazon may have snagged exclusive streaming rights to a chunk of PBS programming recently, but Netflix is fighting back, announcing last week that it has struck an extension deal for content that include exclusive streaming rights to the children’s show Super Why and British murder mystery miniseries The Bletchley Circle. In addition, Netflix also announced that it is now the streaming home of FOX’s popular New Girl series. Hulu and Hulu Plus will still feature the most recent five episodes of the show that have aired as well as five episodes from previous seasons of New Girl, but Netflix has the entire first season available for streaming and will have the entire second season available shortly after the third season begins airing this fall.
In other words: Though Amazon may have snagged exclusive streaming rights to a chunk of PBS programming recently, Netflix is fighting for a piece of the pie.
Dish is currently broadcasting eight channels of mobile video in 13 locations across the country, but is considering expanding its service to 40 markets. According to FCC filings, Dish is testing a much larger mobile video capability that would include such areas as Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Birmingham, Ala.
Global warming is making storms of the century an annual occurrence. The Florida Division of Emergency Management is launching a pilot program to use mobile TV during hurricane season. FDEM has partnered with the National Association of Broadcasters, the Florida Association of Broadcasters, and Dyle Mobile TV and will provide members of the State Emergency Response Team with mobile TV devices that will deliver live, local information in the event of a hurricane.
ShoutOMatic aims to help television shows gain extra engagement with audiences through the use of second screens. Shows can offer up the ability to receive a shoutout from the program by asking them to text a particular number. After sending that text, viewers will receive a verbal, pre-recorded shoutout on their phones. After the message plays, the web browser will open up to any URL that the contracting show or brand would like viewers to witness at that time. Mark Cuban’s AXS TV was the first to use ShoutOMatic. Shows and brands not only gain that extra engagement but also have the option of collecting data from those who opt-in for the shoutouts.

YuMe, a provider of digital video brand advertising solutions, is saying that it aims to go public. In the first quarter YuMe pulled in $26.6 million in revenue, up 33% from the first three months of last year. The original filing is for up to $65 million in common stock, and Citigroup and Deutsche Bank Securities have been named the book-runners
The Native Advertising Summit sponsored by Sharethrough was held June 27 in Atlanta and brought together publishers, platforms, brands, and agencies to discuss how to create content and the methods to distribute that content in a digital world where banners and pre-roll ads are no longer the only options. A panel moderated by Cynopsis focused on how brands including Coca-Cola and Gap approach native advertising.
Mobile TV is on the rise. Broadcast Engineering magazine and SCRI have discovered in a survey that 30.6% of broadcasters are transmitting mobile TV. The expectation is that the number will grow to 45% or more in the next two years.
The rise of smartphones and tablets means that wireless data traffic is expected to rise more than 300% by 2017, according to Strategy Analytics. A major reason for that growth will be the continued increase of streaming video. Apps, however, do not account for much of the world’s data traffic, the company says. Mobile data traffic is expected to grow 42% by 2017. Mobile web browsing is expected to grow 30% in that same time.
NBC News Channel has renewed its multi-year contract for use of Civolution‘s broadcast intelligence solution, Teletrax. NBC will use the Teletrax data to gain insights on precisely how its content is used and disseminated by the NBC affiliates, US domestic and international clients. This will afford NBC News Channel with more efficient inventory management and optimal allocation of the company’s resources in producing and distributing its assets.
Twitter’s six-second looping video-sharing app, Vine, has released an updated app that includes a redesigned camera, categories for various vine genres, and the ability to “revine” people’s existing Vines, similar to retweeting. It also improves users’ abilities to get noticed within the app, via upgrades such as expanding Vine to 15 channels, including comedy and music.
Mobile gamers are spending way more time gaming than they used to. According to NativeX, the average mobile gamer’s engagement time has more than doubled in the last year. Other key findings:
*Those who play more than 10 minutes per mobile-gaming session (also known as power users) have doubled as well.
*Mobile gamers spent on average two minutes and 37 seconds playing per session in the first quarter of 2013. That’s up from one minute 27 seconds in the third quarter of 2012.
Disney‘s The Lone Ranger may have had a rough first weekend at the box office, bringing in around $29.4 million instead of the $40 million more analysts had expected. Perhaps the film’s mobile game can do better. Disney launched the free-to-play game for iOS and Android devices leading up to the July 3 debut of the film. The game asks its players to take on the role of the Lone Ranger and save the town of Colby, Texas. Previous Disney mobile games that have been hits include Temple Run: Brave, Where’s My Water? and Temple Run: Oz.
Electronic Arts All Play’s general manager, Nick Earl, said in an interview with PocketLint that the so-called freemium model is the future of making money with mobile games, meaning that the game is free and the in-app purchases are where money is made: “The market has absolutely spoken so loudly that freemium is the future,” Earl told the site. “There’s only one premium game in the top 50 grossing, so the market has spoken.” EA’s recent successes using the freemium model include Real Racing 3 and The Simpsons Tapped Out. In addition, EA has helped toymaker Hasbro score some hits in the mobile-game market in recent years with such titles as Monopoly Hotels and Scrabble. Hasbro would apparently like the hits to keep on coming and has extended its contract with Electronic Arts for another four years. EA will continue developing games for such Hasbro brands as Monopoly, Scrabble, The Game of Life, Battleship, Boggle, Clue, Risk, and Yahtzee.
Facebook is experimenting with becoming a mobile-game publisher. In exchange for a share of the revenue, Facebook has started to have some small mobile-game developers offer their games through mobile ads.
In Other Words: This would give those smaller developers a potentially much wider distribution system so they can compete with the larger publishers while also potentially bringing in a lot of bucks to Facebook.
Los Angeles-based The Promotional Edge has hired Ryann Johnson as Director/Marketing, where she will supervise promotional strategy and development in addition to client management for the entertainment marketing agency. Johnson previously worked for ABC Networks as a member of the Primetime Integrated Marketing team.
Honda may be known for its cars but the company wants the world to think of it as an innovator. Its newest digital video commercial, Honda Hands, showcases just that as a pair of hands squeezes, pulls, and prods different Honda products to become cars, robots, motorcycles, jet engines, and a solar-powered concept car, among other things. Nearly two minutes long, it has more than 2 million views since being posted on July 3. Ad agencies, are you listening?
See you tomorrow,
Mark Miller
