The winner in the battle for Hulu is inching closer. Bidding for the streaming-media company was set to end on Friday. It’s been reported that Hulu has narrowed down its list of prospective bidders to DirectTV, The Chernin Group and Guggenheim Digital Media. Owned by Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast, Hulu earned $695 million in 2012 and the Hulu Plus service had four million paying users, according to the company.
USA Network has announced the launch of TV Everywhere, giving viewers access to its original content the day after air. USA is the first cable entertainment network within NBCUniversal to provide this offering. USA fans will be able to access shows via www.usanetwork.com and a new app, “USA Now,” which derives its name from the Bravo Now app. Launched last Wednesday for iOS, “USA Now” will be available in an Android version in mid-July.
The history of the mob told by those who lived it is the focus of the new National Geographic Channel series Inside the American Mob. The series chronicles the true-life story of the modern mob in America as former mobsters, informants and FBI agents expose the takedown of some of the most infamous organized crime rings in U.S. history. The series premieres Sunday, July 28 at 9p.
Bring on the pom-poms! The eighth season of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team premieres Friday, September 6 at 9p on CMT. The network’s longest running non-music series will feature eight one-hour episodes, as the Lone Star State’s most iconic group of women takes on more challenging dance routines and navigates the drama that comes with the competition.
Big Brother‘s live eviction show, NCIS: Los Angeles and Person of Interest are moving to new time periods on CBS. Big Brother, which currently airs Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, will now be broadcast on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, with the live eviction show shifting to Thursday on July 11 at 9p. Beginning Tuesday, July 9, NCIS: Los Angeles will air at 9p, followed by Person of Interest at 10p.
BFFs Mary and Rhoda are reuniting on MeTV. Starting tonight, the cable network will air The Mary Tyler Moore Show followed by Rhoda weeknights at 9p. Viewers are invited to send greetings to Valerie Harper and the rest of the Rhoda cast at www.MeTVNetwork.com and share their best gal pal moments or personal photos on the online guest book.
ION Television is adding two viewer favorites to its lineup. Burn Notice and White Collar will join the network’s off-cable drama portfolio, which includes Psych, Leverage and Monk. “Burn Notice and White Collar have the creative quality and originality we look for to serve smart and engaged audiences with our ‘Positively Entertaining’ brand promise,” said Brandon Burgess, Chairman and CEO, ION Media Networks.
Nine passionate fans will put their imagination and skills to the test to compete in the new Syfy series Heroes of Cosplay. The six-episode docu-series spotlights comic book fans who dress up as their favorite characters at conventions. The show debuts Tuesday, August 13 at 10:30p, before moving to its regular 10p slot on Tuesday, August 20.
Hallmark Channel is cutting ties with Marie, the talk show hosted by Marie Osmond. In a statement the network said, “Hallmark Channel is in a phase of true transformation to a much more diversified portfolio of family friendly entertainment that includes original movies and acquired series in addition to original primetime scripted series and a full original daytime line up. With so many talk show offerings in the daypart, particularly in broadcast syndication, Hallmark Channel has decided not to greenlight a second season of its Critics Choice Award nominated talk show Marie, starring Marie Osmond.”
The perilous world of the animal kingdom’s deadliest hunters is explored in The Secret Life of Predators, a four-part event from National Geographic Television. The special will be simulcast on both National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD on Friday, September 20 and Friday, September 27. Naturalist and big cat tracker Boone Smith is the host.
Designing duo Monica Mangin and Jess Jackson transform lackluster spaces into rooms the whole family can enjoy in Knock It Off! The newest original series on The Live Well Network, which premiered Saturday, July 6, will air Sundays at 7p.
Switched at Birth star Lea Thompson and Bianca Santos of The Fosters will participate in live Twitter chats during the East Coast feeds of their series on Monday, July 8. Fans should tweet Thompson at @LeaKThompson from 8 to 9p and include the hashtag #SwitchedAtBirthChat. Santos will chat from 9 to 10p. Based on the online show, the new version of BRKDWN will be a half-hour series featuring pop culture news and stories of the moment. It will debut this fall.
Netflix has expanded its licensing agreement with PBS Distribution for its members in the United States and Canada. Beginning this fall, members will have SVOD access to all seasons of U.K. drama The Bletchley Circle. In addition, in 2014 Netflix will be the exclusive SVOD home of the PBS Kids preschool series Super Why! and will add Ken Burns documentaries including Prohibition and Central Park Five, past seasons of Nova and Secrets of the Dead, and children’s series Wild Kratts, Cailou and Arthur.
TNT has renewed alien invasion drama Falling Skies for a fourth season. The series will return with 10 new episodes in 2014.
A+E Networks UK has announced the UK launch of Lifetime this fall, marking the European debut for the brand. Lifetime will offer a range of quality scripted dramas, original movies and factual entertainment from the US and UK with an emphasis on bold, distinctive, feel good content.
Phil Breman has been named Vice President of Current Programming at NBC. Breman, formerly executive director of original series development at Disney Channel, will be tasked with overseeing some of the network’s new comedy and drama series for the 2013-2014 season.
The Promotional Edge has hired Ryann Johnson as Director, Marketing. Johnson, who previously worked for ABC Networks as a member of the Primetime Integrated Marketing team, will supervise promotional strategy and development and client management for the entertainment marketing agency.
