Good morning. It’s Monday, July 5, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing, on a relatively quiet holiday Monday.
The unofficial holiday weekend tallies at the box office put Spider-Man 2 (Sony) above the $150 million mark, a cumulative box office number since last Wednesday. The biggest Wednesday to Saturday opening weekend thus far was set by Shrek 2 (DreamWorks) last May when it brought in $129 million. The best six-day opening was by The Matrix Reloaded which took in $146 million. Official numbers for Spider-Man 2 and the top ten weekend list here tomorrow.
Coming off a big Wimbledon weekend which saw many seeded players fall by the wayside, John McEnroe is set to premiere his newest endeavor – a talk show on CNBC, Wednesday at 10p. He even has a side kick – John Fugelsang, a VH1 VeeJay in a former life. The show follows Dennis Miller each night, a show which has drawn an average audience of 236,000.
Attention TIVO users – when you set your machines to record the new fall spinoff of David E. Kelley’s The Practice, don’t go looking for Fleet Street. The show now has a new name – Boston Legal (not to be confused with Boston Legal Seafood, though I’m sure they’re both good), and it premieres on Sunday, September 26, at 10p.
USA network is looking backwards for made-fors going forward. Kojak (produced by Playa Inc.) will get a face lift and a face change with the new film starring Ving Rhames. And according to Variety, USA is also looking at a remake of Scarface.
CBS’ latest seasonal installment of Big Brother kicks off tomorrow night and for reality show junkies, the network will offer up another component to the show – an online streaming talk show. The 30m show House Calls: The Big Brother Talk Show will air/stream weekdays at 1pm, hosted by Gretchen Massey and Marcelles Reynolds (fans of the show will remember Marcelles from the third season). The show will take emails and live call-ins (323-CBS-1000). Big Brother will air on Tuesdays at 9p, Thursdays at 8p and Saturdays at 9p.
Also launching tomorrow on CBS is Amazing Race with a special 90m premiere ep beginning at 930p. The show has 11 teams of 2 competing for a million bucks.
