Good morning. It’s Monday, July 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Discovery Channel: Off the Hook: Extreme Catches at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Friday’s opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics from London broadcast on NBC has become the most-watched opening ceremony for a Summer Games ever.  NBC averaged 40.7 million total viewers from 8p to midnight, based on Nielsen fast nationals.  This total viewer count represents a +17% bump over the 2008 Beijing Games which averaged 34.9 million viewers.  Elsewhere around the world, BBC1’s coverage of the Summer Games from its home city averaged 22.4 million viewers or an 82.5% share of all people watching in the UK.  The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics has become the most-watched TV event of the year-to-date in the UK and the largest Olympics opening audience in the UK in at least 20 years.  Canada’s CTV network delivered an average audience of 6.4 million Canadian TV viewers for its live broadcast of the opening ceremony from London airing before the delayed coverage via NBC in the US.

Late last week, ABC revealed twelve of the celebrities participating in the next edition of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars consisting of former winners and fan favorites.  The 13th celebrity will be voted on by fans and the three celebrities vying for that spot are Sabrina Bryan, Carson Kressley and Kyle Massey.  Fans of the show can vote for one of these three in the Viewers’ Choice: All-Star at www.ABC.com/DancingwiththeStars from now through August 24 at 12p.  The final cast member will be announced live on Good Morning America August 27.  The dozen celebrities joining the show which premieres September 24 at 8p include: Kirstie Alley, Pamela Anderson, Helio Castroneves, Joey Fatone, Shawn Johnson, Drew Lachey, Gilles Marini, Kelly Monaco, Apolo Anton Ohno, Bristol Palin, Melissa Rycroft and Emmitt Smith.

AMC’s The Killing will not be renewed for a third season.  The network announced the news on Friday and released this statement: “After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew The Killing for a third season. AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from show-runner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast.”  Fox TV Studios produced the series.

At its TCA press tour on Saturday, FX’s president John Landgraf detailed several news bits: FX renewed its comedy Louie starring Louis C.K. for a fourth season with 13 episodes; the network gave seven additional episodes to its new late-night series BrandX With Russell Brand which is due to return in October following new eps of The League; and Landgraf also said the look and format of BrandX With Russell Brand will be changed to more closely resemble a traditional late-night show with guests each week.  Landgraf further said Charlie Sheen’s series Anger Management has surpassed the network’s undisclosed ratings goal which will kick in the back 90-episode order though FX won’t make this official until all of the first 10 eps air.  In other Anger Management news, Landgraf indicated if the show continues Martin Sheen will join the cast in the recurring role as Martin Goodson, the father of Charlie Sheen’s character.  FX is moving forward with a new drama by ordering a pilot for The Bridge based on the Danish series of the same name produced by FX Productions and Shine America.  Landgraf additionally said more dramas are on the horizon for FX and two more may roll out in the next year with one likely being the spy drama, The Americans starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS revealed several series casting news items for the upcoming 2012-2013 season:

  • Natalie Martinez will recur as a NYPD detective on CSI: NY who will work closely with Flack (Eddie Cahill).
  • Sarah Jones is joining as a series regular beginning in the second episode of new series Vegas.  Jones will play Mia Rizzo, the smart daughter of one of Chicago’s most powerful men.
  • For new series Made In Jersey, two have joined as series regulars: Kristoffer Polaha and Megalyn Echikunwoke and both will first appear in an episode airing October 5.  Polaha will play a third year attorney named Nolan Adams who is considered part of Manhattan’s literati while Echikunwoke will play Riley Prescott, a second year lawyer and the daughter of the former US Ambassador to Sweden.
  • On Blue Bloods, Sebastian Sozzi will recur as Vinny Cruz, a fast-talking new partner for character Jamie Reagan (Will Estes).  Sozzi will first appear in the October 5 episode.
  • Ivan Sergei and previously-announced British actress Polly Walker are both joining The Mentalist in recurring roles.  Sergei will play Gabe Mancini, a tough, handsome FBI agent while Walker will play Senior FBI Agent Alexa Schultz.

Update from ABC’s Modern Family: the six adult cast members, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara have ironed out their salary renegotiations with 20th Century Fox Television.  This salary deal also has resulted in the six actors dropping their lawsuit against 20th Television which they filed early last week.

NBC’s The Office tapped Jake Lacy (Better With You) as a series regular for the ninth season.  Details on Lacy’s character have not been disclosed though he will play a new hire named Pete who could be a potential love interest for Erin (Ellie Kemper).

New ABC comedy How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life added Stephanie Hunt (Friday Night Lights) as a series regular, per THR.

Production is underway on GSN’s new original series, The American Bible Challenge, a one-hour game show hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy.  The show premieres on GSN August 23 at 8p.

Veteran TV actress Heather Locklear is joining TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland for a multiple episode run where she will play a former Miss Ohio who hires Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli) to work at her PR firm, reports TVLine.
