CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/18/05

Good morning.  It’s Monday, July 18, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

It’s finally happened — a cable network has picked up the syndicated cable rights to another cable network’s original series.  Spike TV has picked up The Shield, distributed by Sony Pictures TV, FX’s signature series.  Spike has all 54 episodes (plus the upcoming season of 13 more eps) and can schedule the show for Mon-Fri airings. A broadcast component for the weekend plays has already been cleared on the Tribune O&O station group (straight barter, two year deal).  Spike gets the show beginning in March 2006, while the broadcast side will begin airing the series in the Fall 2006.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The Style Network will launch a new series in 4th qtr 2005 starring Isaac Mizrahi, appropriately titled Isaac.  He will focus on all things concerning having a great lifestyle – home, garden, fashion, diet, pets, pop culture, beauty, style, love, coffee.  Shot in NYC, the show will be taped in front of a live studio audience.

CNN kicks off The Situation Room on August 8, with Wolf Blitzer hosting, airing from 3-6pm daily.

HBO has renewed Entourage for a third season, perhaps with more than 13 episodes.  The announcement was one of several made by HBO at the Television Critics Association press event in California. The start date for the upcoming 5th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will be September 25 at 10p.  Around the same time, production is scheduled to begin on a miniseries based on the life and times of President John Adams.  And starting next month, look for the new late night series One Night Stand (debuts August 19) featuring a variety of stand up comics; and look for OTO stand up specials with George Carlin, Dennis Miller and Robert Klein.

Bravo will align with AOL for its debut of its new series Situation: Comedy. The show makes its cable premiere on July 26 at 8p ET. At 8pm Pacific Time, it will air on Bravo on the West Coast as well as online with AOL. The show is about comedy writers and their ideas for future sitcoms, in a competition for the best pitch.  Bravo has scheduled 8 episodes and the final ep featuring the two finalists and their pitches will also be available on AOL on August 23-31 where viewers can vote for their favorite.

IFC will also offer up programming online – three of its series set to join its Fanatic Friday’s block, will be available as streaming series at the network website three days prior to their broadcast premiere.  All scripted series (these are the first scripted series for IFC), The Festival, Greg the Bunny, and HOPELESs Pictures, will debut online one week before their onair August 19 debut.  Thereafter, the three will be available online, tho only after the eps first air on television.

Urban music and culture network Trace TV, founded by ex-Goldman Sachs exec Richard Wayner and Parisian partners in 2003, will debut this month in the US on Dish TV.   It will include videos, documentaries, interviews and awards programs from around the world (such as of South Africa’s Music of Black Origins show) with an initial emphasis on an international music mix.  Mainstream urban music such as 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys will be mixed with artists like Puerto Rico’s Daddy Yankee, Guadeloupe’s Admiral T and Africa’s Magic System.  Trace TV is currently available in 62 nations and 40 million homes.

Cox Communications will add The Africa Channel to its digital tier this fall.  The advertiser supported, 24/7 cable network features programming from Africa including films, reality, news, music and soaps.

TV One which launched in January 2004, and how available in 21 million homes, has announced it will begin reporting ratings as of fourth quarter.
