A whole lotta Hoopla over Hulu: After months of heated speculation, the owners of Hulu have decided not to sell the online video service after all. NBCUniversal, 21st Century Fox and the Walt Disney Company will instead make a $750 million investment in the service that keeps them solidly in the ever-evolving streaming video game. “Disney and its partners are committing resources to enable Hulu to achieve its maximum potential,” said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger.
The Twitter feeding frenzy for Syfy‘s July 11 premiere of cheesetastic TV-movie Sharknado in which sharks fall from the sky and swim through the streets of LA – didn’t translate into boffo ratings, which were a respectable but unremarkable 1.4 million Total Viewers. But could the 387K social media explosion reel in new eyeballs? The net is betting on it with an encore broadcast of the original movie on Thursday, July 18 at 7p.
The trial of George Zimmerman for killing Trayvon Martin dominated cable news since it began on June 24, and ended with a not-guilty verdict that had emotions running high. As Americans (mostly peacefully) protested in the streets Saturday night after the verdict was announced, celebs from Mia Farrow to Miley Cyrus took to Twitter to express their sadness and outrage. Staunch conservative Ann Coulter expressed the other side with: “Hallelujah!”
Hours after Bay Area outlet KTVU apologized for falsely reporting the names of the pilots in the July 6 Asiana Airlines crash, the National Transportation Safety Board issued its own mea culpa on Friday, admitting that a summer intern at the agency had mistakenly confirmed the offensive names to KTVU. “Captain Sum Ting Wong” – really? “Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated,” said a statement from the NTSB.
TV Land has partnered with MatchingDonors.com to raise awareness about the urgent need for organ donors. The issue is explored on the Wednesday, July 17th episode of Hot in Cleveland, when actress Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) decides to donate a kidney to a sick child.
It’s been exactly ten years since the Fab Five on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (2003-2007) started their makeover magic, one slovenly hetero at a time. Bravo is marking the occasion with an all-day marathon today “best-of” eps will include the series premiere and finale, from 6a to 5p.
The two-hour series premiere of Cedar Cove on Hallmark Channel introduces the townsfolk of you-know-where, a seaside town turned upside down by a developer eager to destroy its beloved lighthouse. Andie MacDowell and Bruce Boxleitner are among the familiar faces, Saturday, July 20 at 8p.
Oprah‘s on a roll. After nabbing Lance Armstrong and Rihanna for mid-scandal sit-downs, the talk show queen has signed up Lindsay Lohan for an August interview (the troubled star has to finish up her rehab stint in Betty Ford first, which should be around July 31st), as well as an eight-part documentary series to run in 2014.
PowerwomenTV moves from cabs to computer screens today. Programs on the digital women’s lifestyle network, featured in New York City taxis since the spring, will be streamed along the outlet’s social media channels. “Our content focuses on a woman’s 360 approach to life – from business to style, from money to parenting,” says network founder and CEO Amy Palmer.
USA Network has a hot date with Tinder, an app that matches people with similar interests. The network’s marketing effort is geared toward luring younger adults – especially those hard to-reach males – to the Tuesday, July 16 season three premiere of Suits, by engaging Tinder users with promos and games.
Ken Howard, who was the voted the final president of performers’ union SAG in 2009, has his hat in the ring to lead the now-merged SAG and AFTRA. He’ll face off against Paul Edney, Marilyn Monrovia and Esai Morales; ballots go out tomorrow and must be returned by August 15th.
Bill Cosby is Far From Finished, if the name of his upcoming TV concert is any indication. The beloved comedian’s special his first since 1983 – airs on Comedy Central on Sunday, November 24.

Hazardous search-and-rescue missions involve huge waves and icy temperatures on The Weather Channel‘s Coast Guard Alaska. Season three, which premieres Wednesday, July 17 at 9p, also explores what life is like off-duty for the highly-trained team, and features the first female commanding officer of Air Station Kodiak.
Michigan’s furry friends are in good hands once again when Nat Geo WILD brings back The Incredible Dr. Pol for its fourth season on Saturday, August 17 at 9p. The unflappable vet and local legend cures problems ranging from the mundane (dog hit by a car) to the bizarre (calves’ mysterious mutations).
Walking Dead is going to focus more on character during season four, executive producer Robert Kirkman tells the Hollywood Reporter of the AMC zombie drama, returning in October. But don’t worry – it’ll still scare the pants off everyone. “We’re definitely going to know more about these people so it will be that much more gut-wrenching,” explains the exec.
On Friday, The Tennis Channel called foul on a May court decision in D.C., which overturned FCC rulings that said Comcast unfairly placed the channel in a less desirable tier than other sports networks it owns, such as the Golf Channel. It has asked an appellate court for a rehearing of the claim against Comcast.
Greg Grunberg and Diane Farr have been cast as the leads in USA Network’s comedy pilot, Divide & Conquer, as a couple with very different approaches to parenting. The show is being written and executive produced by The Office‘s Peter Ocko.
The long-lost son of Revenge‘s devious Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) gets a face! Victoria saw Patrick on last season’s cliffhanger of the ABC drama, but the audience didn’t. Now Smallville’s Justin Hartley has been cast for a multi-episode arc in season three, in a role sure to shake up the Hamptons haves and have-nots.
The Vampire Diaries gets new blood for season five, when Kendrick Sampson (Greek) and Olga Fonda (How I Met Your Mother) join the CW drama in recurring roles. Sampson plays Jesse, a student at Whitmore College, while Fonda is a mysterious European beauty named Nadia.
She couldn’t rescue Save Me, but NBC hasn’t given up on Anne Heche. The actress has been signed for multiple episodes on The Michael J. Fox Show, playing a news anchor at the station where her rival, Fox, has returned to work as a correspondent. The anticipated new series premieres Thursday, September 26 at 9p.
Now that it’s gotten off to a strong start in the States, FX‘s new drama series, The Bridge, is ready to take on the world. FOX International Channels is launching the crime thriller, centered on U.S./Mexican border tensions, on all continents and in 35 languages, in 122 countries. A co-production of Shine America and FX Productions, its U.S. premiere on July 10 scored 3.04 million in Total Viewers and 1.16 million 18-49.
Sony Pictures Television Networks is invading Central Europe in October, with local language versions of its AXN Black and AXN White channels. AXN White will offer character-driven, scripted fare like Eat, Pray, Love and Grand Hotel, while AXN Black will muscle its way in with action programming, along the lines of Spartacus.
An autopsy is scheduled for today for Cory Monteith, who was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on Saturday. The Glee star was 31. Monteith had been battling drug addiction since his teens, and completed a stint at an addiction treatment facility in April. The fifth season of Fox‘s Glee is scheduled to premiere September 19. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news,” Fox said in a statement. “Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person.” Monteith also had a role in the upcoming film, All the Wrong Reasons.
Paula Deen‘s empire may be crumbling, but her scandal has been a bonanza for the newsmagazines covering it. The week ending June 30, Entertainment Tonight had a 3.4 rating, up 3% from the week prior. Inside Edition was up 4% with a 2.7, TMZ up 6% with 1.9, and Access Hollywood scored a 1.7, up 6%. The biggest percentage gain was Insider, up 8% with 1.4. Who said you can have too many cooks in the kitchen?

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: Univision‘s soapfest won over A18-49 viewers Thursday at 1.7/5 but it was neck and neck all night, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory was in the lead with 2.0/8 to Porque el Amor’s 1.7/6, but the net lost ground with Two and a Half Men’s 1.6/6, competing against Amores Verdaderos’ 1.9/6 average. CBS was back in the game at 9p, with Big Brother matching FOX’s Hell Kitchen numbers of 2.1/7. NBC woke up at 10p, posting 1.4/4 for Hollywood Game Night to match Univision’s Que Bonito Amor.

At 8p, the battling chefs 2.2/8 edged out the scheming and sex that earned CBS’s Big Brother a 2.0/7, but a 2.3/7 in the 9p slot wasn’t enough to ward off NBC’s America’s Got Talent, with 2.8/8 viewers tuning in for the last round before the remaining acts head to Vegas. The premiere of NBC’s Camp drew 1.5/5, enough to bat back a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds’ 1.0/3.
