ESPN and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) made a 12-year exclusive rights deal involving conference-controlled football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and Olympics sports games as well as conference championships.  The deal commences in 2011-2012 and runs through 2022-2023.  The agreement covers around 4,800 ACC events during the 12-year period over various ESPN properties including ESPN, ESPN on ABC, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com, ESPN 3D, ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN FULL COURT, ESPN International, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Classic and ESPN.com. Some events will be produced in hi-def for ESPN HD, ABC HD, ESPN2 HD and ESPNU HD.  Furthermore, ESPN will continue its sublicense agreement with Raycom Sports as syndicator of ACC programming for over-the-air and regional cable network distribution.  Raycom Sports will also continue managing the ACC’s official corporate partner program and its digital properties such as www.theACC.com , the official conference website.

Rainbow Media Holdings, LLC, owner of the cable networks AMC, WE tv and IFC said AT&T U-Verse customers may not receive these three networks when the distribution deals with AT&T expire at midnight on Wednesday. AT&T has told Rainbow Media its intended plan to pull these networks off its line-up if a new distribution agreement is not hammered out by mid-week.

Two new shows launched on the Cooking Channel while we were off – Spice Goddess and Emeril’s Fresh Food Fast both hit the airwaves on July 10th. Spice Goddess features host Bal Arneson demonstrating the power of spice and healthy Indian cuisine. Emeril’s latest show teaches viewers how to purchase fresh local produce and turn it into a quick and easy meal. Two new shows still to come this month: The Next Food Network Star After Party kicks off July 18 at 11pmrecapping the latest episode with exclusive interviews from contestants voted off the series, as well as behind-the-scenes drama. And debuting on July 24 at 6pm, Cook Like an Iron Chef with Iron Chef Michael Symon who takes viewers behind the scenes of Kitchen Stadium. Each episode will feature a different “secret ingredient” and recipes for great dishes.

HBO set the premiere date for its drama series Boardwalk Empire for September 19 at 9p.  A period piece set in the early part of the Prohibition era in Atlantic City, Boardwalk Empire is from writer Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and director Martin Scorsese.

MSG Plus and StarGames premieres a new half-hour magazine-style series, World of Tennis tomorrow at 730p. The eight-week series will go inside the sport and document the professional tours to the game’s history.  Former tennis pro Justin Gimelstob will host the series.

MTV2 will serve up the Mexican masked wrestling sport Lucha Libre with a new original weekly series, Lucha Libre USA: Masked Warriors beginning this Friday at 10p. MTV Tr3s will air an encore showing on Saturday at 10p. This series represents the first time the Lucha Libre matches will be filmed in the US and broadcast in English. Lucha Libre USA and Cookie Jar Entertainment are producing.

Discovery en Espanol is premiering the 10-part natural history series VIDA (Life) beginning July 26 at 8p.  The BBC and Discovery Channel co-produced the series narrated in Spanish by singer/composer, Juanes.

On July 6, Syfy debuted a second season of Warehouse 13, drawing in 1.35 million A18-49 viewers and 1.58 million A25-54 viewers.

Documentary Channel (DOC) is gearing up for a second season premiere of its first original series, DocTalk beginning September 10 at 8p.  The half-hour weekly show interviews well-known documentary filmmakers and is produced by Documentary Channel Original Productions.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been cleared in 99% of the US for the 2011-12 season, and of those it has been cleared in early fringe time periods in 18 of the top 20 markets and 88 of the top 100 markets. Distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Syndication, Ellen has also been cleared in over 85% of the country for the 20122013 season and in over 77% of the U.S. for 20132014.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

AMC ordered a new pilot project — Hell on Wheels from E1 and Endemol USA. Described as a contemporary western during the time of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad in post Civil War America, the project was developed by Endemol USA, and created and written by Joe and Tony Gayton who will also executive produce.

Soon after making its series debut, Hot in Cleveland was renewed for a second season by TV Land.  The network doubled its episode order to 20 episodes for season two with the new season expected to launch in January 2011.  All four stars  Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White will return as series regulars.

E! is developing a first-time dance show with Ryan Seacrest Productions, per THR. The project will include Lady Gaga’s choreographer, Laurie Ann Gibson as part of the cast and it will involve other choreographers and dancers in Los Angeles.

Comedy Central has a new series in development, an odd-couple type of comedy series starring comedians Ralphie May and Lavell Crawford in Brothers From Another Mother, cites THR.  The multi-camera project stars May, who is white, and Crawford who is African-American, playing lifelong buddies who discover they are actually brothers when their father passes away and bequeaths them his barbeque restaurant.  Ben Feigin of Anonymous Content will executive produce along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum.  May and Crawford will also serve as executive producers.

Former Lost cast member, Eric Lange landed a recurring role on Showtime’s comedy Weeds for its sixth season. Lange will play Ellis Tate a former classmate of Nancy’s. Showtime also tapped Richard Dreyfuss to guest star in four episodes of Weeds’ new season joining other guest stars such as Linda Hamilton and Peter Stormare and returning guest stars Alanis Morissette and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Season six of Weeds opens August 16.

Skeet Ulrich (CSI: NY, Jericho) will next play one of two lead detectives on NBC’s new fall series Law & Order: Los Angeles. Production on the series starts yet this month.

Casting Call: Logo is casting for matchmakers and dating experts to appear on a new matchmaking series. The series is looking for a fun, trendy, outgoing and outspoken gay man from the New York City area who considers himself an expert in dating. Open casting calls will be held this Thursday and Friday. Requirements for the position include: must be between 25 and 40 years old; must be outgoing and fun with a witty sense of humor; have strong opinions about fashion and style, matchmaking and dating and relationship protocols; and must be local to the NYC area. Casting Call: A new competition series showcasing a top Hollywood entertainment career coach is looking for skilled professionals in the entertainment industry who are interested in upping their roster of contacts and jobs.  The show seeks five outgoing and ambitious candidates who are either directors or below-the-line crew members. Candidates must live in Los Angeles and be available from August 26 to 29. Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS and UNIV tied for #1 Thursday night with the A18-49 viewers at 1.8/6 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS won the 8p hour with Big Brother’s new season debut at 2.5/9 followed by ABC’s Wipeout at 2.4/8. UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena did best at 9p with 2.3/7 and FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance trailed closely in second place at 2.1/7. CBS ended the night a winner with The Mentalist repeat at 1.6/5 and UNIV dropped to #2 with La Rosa de Guadalupe at 1.3/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Keith Tiley was named to newly-created position of Global Director of Trading at MEC, reporting to Alastair Aird, MEC’s Global COO and Juergen Blomenkamp, GroupM’s global head of trading. Keith will be based in London and will work closely with GroupM’s trading community. He will be responsible for developing and enhancing the agency’s trading performance across all markets and will work with MEC Interaction, the digital, social, search and direct response arm of the business.

Whitney Holland was appointed VP/Acquisitions for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, based in LA and reporting to Michelle Vicary, SVP/Programming, Acquisitions & Scheduling. Whitney will help develop and implement the strategic programming vision of the channels with Michelle and be responsible for extensive analysis of audience research to pinpoint feature film acquisitions, suggest on-air promotional direction and schedule stunts and theme weeks.

BBC Worldwide Channels named Jon Farrar VP/Programming, EMEA. Responsible for the development and execution of the programming strategy for the BBC portfolio — which includes BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC HD — across Europe Middle East and Africa. He will also join BBC Worldwide’s team of regional programming heads working into the division’s SVP Programming and TV Channels, David Weiland.

Discovery Education upped Scott Kinney to SVP/Global Professional Development, Policy & Education Outreach.  The announcement was made by Bill Goodwyn, President of Global Distribution and CEO, Discovery Education and Lori McFarling, CMO, Discovery Education. Scott will oversee the international expansion of Discovery Education’s Professional Development line of business.

Joining the staff at Disney Channels Worldwide is Jimmy Blackburn as VP/Programming Research. Jimmy reports to Kelly Pena, SVP/Research, and makes the move to Disney after spending the past 10 years at Nickelodeon.
Pete Ross was appointed Director/Development at IMG Media, overseeing IMG Media’s development slate, advancing the relationship with buyers and creating original programming ideas and formats. He will be based in New York, reporting to Steve Mayer, SVP/Exec Producer of IMG Media.

Eli Leher elevated to VP/Development at Bravo Media, reporting to Andy Cohen, SVP/Original Programming and Development. Eli will lead development for Bravo by identifying series concepts and signature characters that appeal to the network’s most affluent and educated audience. Lehrer will relocate to Los Angeles where he will be based.

Petry Network hired Harry Neuhaus as VP/International. Previously, Harry was Director/East Coast Sales and Operations at LATV Networks.

Bruce Marsh was named Creative Director at HNW Inc. where he will manage the development of integrated brand, interactive and direct marketing goals for the company’s clients.

Shaunagh Guinness advanced to SVP/Research and Marketing with Katz Radio Group in New York.  Shaunagh will take on new responsibility by leading a team of researchers who provide tools and information for Katz’s sales group involving radio format trends, ratings and industry news.

Tom Reeve made a career move to Intersport as EVP/Sales.  Tom, who previously was Southwest Director/Sales at Screenvision, will oversee daily sales operations activities nationwide for Intersport and manage a sales team in charge of sponsorship sales for television, event marketing, corporate hospitality and digital media.

Syfy elevated Karen O’Hara to VP/Original Movies to supervise the development and production of 20+ Syfy Saturday Night Original Movies each year.  In the coming year, Karen will oversee such films as Red, Mega Python vs Gatoroid and Sharktopus.  Based at the network’s New York office, Karen reports to Thomas Vitale, EVP, Programming/Original Movies.

Bonten Media Group appointed Andrew Stewart as VP/GM for two of its ABC affiliates: KRCR-TV in Chico-Redding and KAEF-TV in Eureka.  Andrew’s new position is effective July 19.  Most recently, Andrew was VP/GM of KGUN/Tucson (ABC) and before that VP/GM for KWBA/Tucson (CW).
