New weekly weight-loss series Dale con Ganas (Give It Your All) will debut on Univision Network January 11 at 10p.  Hosted by Alfonso “Poncho” de Anda, co-host of Univision’s morning show Despierta America (Wake-Up America), the series follows four Hispanic families who compete against each other as they transform their bodies and their lives.  As every participating family wins by improving their health, the final winners will additionally receive a grand prize package of $100,000.  The series is co-produced by 25/7 Productions (NBC’s The Biggest Loser) and Estefan Film and Television Productions in association with Univision Studios.

At the TCA tour, FOX revealed it is establishing a new division to head the development and production of alternative animated series, shorts and user-adapted content to fill a new late-night animated programming block and a new digital multi-platform network.  Spearheading this new unit is former Adult Swim Head/Program Development and Executive Producer, Nick Weidenfeld in an exclusive deal with FOX.  Additionally, producer Hend Baghdady was tagged as Executive In Charge/Production.  FOX’s new animated late-night block will air on Saturdays from 11p to 1230a and will contain four new animated series each season beginning January 2013.  FOX’s new digital channel will cover online, mobile apps, game consoles and VOD beginning this year and featuring 50 original short-form pieces each year, online windows of FOX animated shows and user-adapted content. 

Also from the TCA tour, E! will expand its weekly series Fashion Police to a one-hour format beginning March 9 at 10p.  Hosted by Joan Rivers, the show features panelists Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and George Kotsiopoulos. 

Bravo Media is increasing its original programming slate by a further 25 percent in 2012.  Bravo additionally approved a one-hour weekly talk show, Kathy hosted by Kathy Griffin set to debut this spring.  Griffin will offer her perspective on everything pop culture, gossip and tabloid headlines in addition to serving up stand-up routines, celebrity interviews and taped segments.  Griffin will also star in two new one-hour stand-up specials for the network this year.  Bravo’s new 2012 series highlights include:

  • Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis stars house flipper Lewis who becomes a home therapist in this new series that also features Lewis’ assistant, Jenni and his housekeeper, Zoila.  Premieres March 14 at 9p.
  • Shahs of Sunset is a new docu-series about a group of young Persian-American friends who juggle living in L.A. with their families and traditions.  Premieres March 2012.
  • Love Broker follows matchmaker Lori Zaslow in New York. Premieres March 2012.
  • Million Dollar Listing New York is a spin-off of Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles and the new show spotlights luxury properties in New York. Premieres March 2012.
  • Around the World in 80 Plates features culinary experts Curtis Stone and Cat Cora as hosts as 12 chefs compete in a foodie race across 10 countries in 44 days.  Premieres May 2012.
  • Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding is a new docu-series featuring the extravagant nuptials of Kim Zolciak who is marrying Defensive End for the Atlanta Falcons Kroy Biermann. Premieres spring 2012.

Bravo has several returning series:

  • Watch What Happens: Live  Season six opened January 8 at 11p airing Sundays through Thursdays.
  • Tabatha Takes Over  Season four debuts this Tuesday at 10p.
  • Inside the Actors Studio returns with a George Clooney episode on January 31 at 8p. Later in the year the cast and creators of FOX’s Glee will be featured.
  • Bethenny Ever After  Season three opens February 20 at 9p.
  • Pregnant in Heels  Season two is back this spring; date TBA.
  • The Millionaire Matchmaker  Season six returns this spring; date TBA.
  • Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles  Season five launches in 2012; date TBA.

In the newly released Nielsen’s State of the Media: Consumer Usage Report for 2011, nearly one in three US TV households (35.9 million) owns four or more televisions.  Based on Nielsen’s report, TV continues to be the most popular device with 290 million Americans and 114.7 million households owning at least one.  In the area of time spent viewing traditional television, the report says the average time weekly among persons 2+ is 32 hours and 47 minutes.  The lowest time spent with traditional TV each week is the 12-17 age category at 22 hours and 24 minutes while the highest time spent is the 65+ age category at 46 hours and 16 minutes. Last Thursday’s fifth season premiere of MTV’s Jersey Shore attracted 7.6 million total viewers though this season debut marked a -14% decline over the fourth season launch. 

Saturday’s Your Voice, Your Vote  Republican Presidential Debate in New Hampshire presented by ABC News and airing live tallied 6.25 million viewers; 1.73 among A25-54; and 1.40 million with A18-49 viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC is moving forward with a futuristic pilot from Shawn Ryan (creator The Shield) titled Last Resort.  The plot centers on the crew of a US nuclear submarine who after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, find themselves being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation.  Karl Gajdusek and Ryan wrote the pilot and Ryan will also be the executive producer.  Sony Pictures Television is producing the project.

Action reality competition series, The Great Escape was given the go-ahead by TNT.  Fox Television Studios, Imagine Entertainment, The Hochberg Ebersol Company and Profiles Television Productions are behind TNT’s first-ever competition series that drops teams of ordinary people into the middle of their own epic action/adventure movie.  TNT has ordered 10 episodes and will premiere The Great Escape this summer.  Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, Elise Doganieri, Bertram van Munster, Justin Hochberg and Charlie Eberson are all serving as executive producers.

New multi-camera buddy comedy series Men at Work was approved by TBS.  Set to launch this summer, Men at Work stars Danny Masterson, James Lesure, Michael Cassidy and Adam Busch as four buddies who work together at a magazine.  TBS ordered 10 episodes from Sony Pictures Television and Fanfare.  Breckin Meyer created the series and will serve as executive producer along with Fanfare’s Jamie Tarses and Julia Franz. 

44 Blue Productions made an exclusive agreement to develop a docu-series based on the online entertainment news site, Hollyscoop.  The series titled Hollyscoop Confidential will follow the three founders, Diana Madison, Ani Esmailian and Nora Gasparian, who are also childhood friends.  44 Blue’s Stephanie Drachkovitch will be the executive producer on the project. 

Musician/actor Harry Connick Jr. landed a four-episode run on NBC’s Law & Order: SVU beginning with the January 18 episode.  Connick will play a dedicated, by-the-book assistant D.A. named David Haden who becomes a love interest for Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

NBC’s Robert Greenblatt, Chairman/Entertainment confirmed Alec Baldwin renewed his contract with sitcom 30 Rock for this season and next.  The deal, according to Greenblatt was concluded last fall. 

In other NBC news, Marcia Gay Harden was cast in the lead for a new comedy pilot called Isabel about a normal middle-class family that struggles with ordinary events while raising a daughter (Grimm’s Sophia Mitri Schloss) who possesses magical qualities.  Harden will play the mother. 

Former Dukes of Hazzard star Catherine Bach is back on television joining CBS’ daytime soap The Young and the Restless with her first appearance starting February 7. Bach will play Anita, the scheming mother of Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan).

Irish actor Kevin Ryan was tapped to join BBC America’s upcoming new period police drama Copper that also stars Tom Weston-Jones and Franke Potente, reports THR.  The drama is set in 1860s New York City.  Ryan will play the series regular role of Detective Francis Maguire, an Irish-American cop who works closely with Kevin Corcoran (Weston-Jones).   Production begins on Copper this month in Toronto.  The series is BBC America’s first scripted series and Shaw Media and Cineflix Studios are co-producing.  Copper will premiere on BBC America this summer and in Canada on Shaw Media Showcase in the fall.

Submissions Call:  truTV is looking for outrageous, funny, shocking caught-on-tape footage for two upcoming holiday specials (Halloween and Holidays).  Examples the network is looking for include cops pulling over a drunk Santa; over the top Halloween pranks or pranks gone wrong; surveillance footage of someone stealing pumpkins or Christmas decorations from lawn; Mother’s Day pranks; July 4th fireworks backfires; holiday parade mishaps and more.  truTV is looking for any and all holiday footage.  If you are with a TV news station, please check your footage library.  Send the footage to Steve at: [email protected].

Thursday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC had the winning lineup Thursday delivering a 3.3/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS with repeat episodes
of The Big Bang Theory and Rules of Engagement won at 8p with an average of 3.0/9 and ABC’s winter premiere of Wipeout came next at 2.7/8.  Grey’s Anatomy on ABC had the cure at 9p with a 4.5/12 while Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar was #2 at 1.9/5 and CBS’ encore of Person of Interest was a close third at 1.8/5.  ABC continued in first place at 10p with a new episode of Private Practice at 2.7/7 and CBS followed with The Mentalist in rerun at 1.9/5.

Effective immediately, MediaVest USA promoted Christine Merrifield to President/Video Investment and Activation.  In her new role, Christine is charged with managing all facets involving video investment and activation across broadband, broadcast, cable, local and out-of-home in addition to investment operations.  Christine will further remain on the agency’s Executive Team.  She reports to Bill Tucker, CEO.

Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) elevated Zev Levy to Director/Sales of SBS Los Angeles.  Zev, who was previously the GSM for KLAX 97.9FM “La Raza” and KXOL 96.3FM “Latino” stations, will now supervise the consolidated sales efforts for both L.A. stations including SBS Interactive and SBS Entertainment. 

Beginning June 2012, Preston Beckman, EVP/Strategic Program Planning and Research with Fox Broadcasting Company will take on the new position as Senior Strategist for Fox Networks Group.  Preston will offer his knowledge and strategic insight into scheduling, programming and research for all FNG entertainment divisions.  He will report directly to Peter Rice, Chairman/Entertainment, Fox Networks Group.
