In other countries, De Angelis Group made separate rights deals for the miniseries with Artists Studio TV in the UK and Ireland and with CBC for Canada. The miniseries recently completed production in Dublin and is set for delivery this year, marking the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage. De Angelis Group is co-producing the miniseries with RAI Italy; Los Angeles-based 3 Arts; Canada’s CBC; UK’s Artists Studio; Germany’s Tandem Communications; Ireland’s Epos Films; and Spain’s Antena 3. Titanic: Blood and Steel stars Chris Noth, Neve Campbell, Kevin Zegers and Sir Derek Jacobi.
Late last week, ABC ordered several pilots including three comedies. The first is a single-camera project How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life from Claudia Lonow who will serve as EP with Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo; 20th Century Fox Television is producing. The second comedy pilot is called Parents about a recently-divorced single mom who moves in with her eccentric parents; 20th Century Fox Television is also producing this pilot from Adam Sztykiel who will serve as co-EP; Sean Perrone and Aaron Kaplan will be EPs. The third comedy pilot is from ABC Studios and Happy Endings consulting producers Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley titled Only Fools and Horses. This is a multi-camera adaptation of a British series about the misadventures of two street-savvy brothers and their aging grandfather as they devise morally-questionable get-rich-quick schemes to try to become millionaires.
ABC also ordered two drama pilots including one from Thelma & Louise’s Callie Khouri called Nashville. Khouri is working with documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler on this family soap set inside Nashville’s music scene that follows one star at her peak and one who is rising. Cutler will direct the pilot while Steve Buchanan of Gaylord Entertainment will be an EP with Khouri and Cutler. The pickup on Nashville is contingent on closing the co-production deal between ABC Studios and Lionsgate. ABC’s second drama pilot is titled Americana, a soap about a legendary fashion designer and his family and business. Michael Seitzman is writing and serving as EP with Mark Gordon and Nicholas Pepper of Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios.
Also late on Friday, CBS ordered several pilot projects including three comedies. The first comedy is an untitled project from Greg Berlanti and Greg Malins (Friends) about a man who, following a health scare, realizes he is in love with his femme best friend and business partner of 15 years. Malins and Berlanti are writing the pilot and will serve as EPs; Warner Bros. Television is producing. Will & Grace’s Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are behind the second comedy titled Partners about two longtime male friends whose relationship is tested when one decides to get married. Mutchnick and Kohan are EPs; Warner Bros. Television is producing. The third comedy pilot is a buddy project called Friend Me from CBS Television Studios about two 20-something guys who move from Indiana to L.A. to work for Groupon. Alan Kirschenbaum and Ajay Sahgal are writing and are EPs along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum.
Furthermore, CBS okayed a trio of drama pilots including one based on the book series from Ayelet Waldman, Mommy Track Mysteries about a former public defender who becomes a private investigator to help stave off boredom as a stay-at-home mom. The second drama pilot is a 1960s period piece from Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas) and Greg Walker about Ralph Lamb, a rodeo cowboy-turned-longtime sheriff of Las Vegas. The third drama pilot is Quean from Joel Silver referred to as an edgy project about an independent hacker girl who teams with an Oakland police detective to solve crimes.
NBC approved a comedy pilot from Ryan Murphy (FOX’s Glee) and 20th Century Fox Television called The New Normal. The project also has Glee EPs Dante Di Loreto and Allison Adler on board the single-camera family comedy about a gay couple and the woman who becomes their surrogate. Andrew Rannells was also selected to star in one of the lead roles of The New Normal. This marks Murphy’s first half-hour project and also the first at NBC.
National Geographic Channel is pairing up with Ben Silverman’s Electus on a deal involving the development of three programs for the News Corp./National Geographic Society joint venture with a guarantee that one will be approved. One project is described by Electus as an “immersive reality series” that re-creates the trans-Atlantic voyage of the Mayflower in 1620 to what is now Massachusetts. The other two projects are being kept under wraps for now.
FremantleMedia North America forged an overall deal with production company Purveyors of Pop to develop and produce unscripted programming. The principals of Purveyors of Pop, Matt Anderson and Nate Green are EPs on Bravo’s Atlanta, New Jersey and New York editions of Real Housewives and Bethenny Ever After.
Canadian production company Hop To It Productions is developing a multi-platform project called Talent Hounds, working with Canadian broadcaster The Pet Network. The project will help connect pet owners across the country to celebrate the shared love of dogs.
Beginning production later this year, a group of Singapore-based companies are behind the new music/reality TV show, The Bandwagon. The series, backed by Hub Media Group Pte Ltd., Silver Media Group, Media Development Asia and Klass International Pte Ltd. will discover an English-performing band. The Bandwagon will be produced in Singapore and will feature the search for each member of the band from across Asia that will then be marketed and distributed internationally. The band will receive an international record deal from Richard Gottehrer and Seymour Stein, the founders of Sire Records. Gottehrer will further serve as resident judge on the show.
Canada’s AllScreen Entertainment inked a deal with The Naked News Network to create a new reality docu-soap TV series based on the inner workings of the Naked News, the TV/online destination featuring attractive women who deliver news, sports and infotainment features while wearing nothing. The series is tentatively titled The Naked Truth: The Naked News Uncovered.
Showtime’s drama pilot Ray Donovan tapped Eddie Marsan and Dash Mihok in the roles as Ray’s brothers. Ray will be played by previously-announced Liev Schreiber. Additionally, Paula Malcomson was cast as Ray’s wife, Abby. Production begins in Los Angeles early this year.
Kevin Weisman (Alias) landed a recurring role on NBC’s upcoming series Awake. Weisman’s role is described as a mysterious character called Mr. Blonde who haunts Detective Britton (Jason Isaacs).
