CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/30/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 30, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt were both seriously injured yesterday while on assignment in Iraq for World News Tonight when their convoy was hit by an explosive device.  Both suffered head injuries and underwent surgery at a military hospital outside Baghdad.   In a statement released yesterday afternoon, both were out of surgery and in stable condition, and have both since been flown to a medical facility in Germany.  According to ABCNews.com, the explosion was believed to be tripped thru a hard wire in the ground.  Following the explosion, there were several rounds of small arms fire coming from three directions. Both men had been wearing body armor, helmets and ballistic glasses.

Tonight’s Premieres:
WE:  Take This House & Sell it at 8p, and Style by Jury at 1030p

*MORE GOOD STUFF*The President’s State of the Union Address is scheduled for Tuesday, January 31, beginning at 9p. Immediately following the President’s speech, will be Democrat’s remarks from Virginia Governor Tim Kaine.

The NFL Network will get its first regular season games this fall, starting with the Thanksgiving night game.  The package includes a total of 8 games.  The package was being pitched by several outlets including Comcast for the OLN network, Turner and NBC among others.  The ask by the NFL for the rights fee was $400 million.  This is the first new package of games licensed by the NFL since 1990.  The games in the NFL Network package will be played on Thursday and Sunday nights, and in addition to carriage on the network, will be made available to local stations in the teams’ home markets.

Programming Note: ABC will launch its new series Sons & Daughters on March 7, and has scheduled it as a weekly double run at 9p and 930p. For the time being, that leaves Commander in Chief out in the cold, tho ABC says it will return in the spring.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Four new projects for ABC:

  • ABC has ordered six episodes of a comedy project called In Case of Emergency.  The project comes from Emile Levisetti and writer Howard Morris about a group of friends who all come thru a crisis together, and realize their lives didn’t exactly turn out as they had planned. Instead, their lives took twists and turns as results of major live altering happenings, as well as small seemingly insignificant events.  ABC has also ordered 12 scripts in addition to the 6 episodes.
  • Notes from the Underbelly is a comedy about a couple who are pregnant, and their friends. From Warner Bros., the project was written by Stacy Traub.
  • From Sony Pictures Television, A Day in the Life begins with a couple’s wedding.  That wedding, the planning, and the actual event, take a full season to reveal.  Additional seasons, assuming there are additional seasons, will each focus on a single day or event in the couple’s lives. This project is from exec producers Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa.
  • Help Me Help You is from Regency TV, also a comedy, that begins with introductions at a group therapy session.

CBS has ordered up a pilot called Under Pressure from CBS Paramount NEtwork TV.  The adventure series is about a latter day Indiana Jones-type, and his quest to solve mysteries of the past.

NBC has ordered a drama pilot from Conaco and NBC Universal TV about a politician who dies, and is then given a second chance to come back and change his life, thereby saving his soul.  This project was initially titled The Haskett Chronicles, tho now is officially an untitled drama.

And a few casting notes from Hollywood Reporter …

Here’s one of those good news/bad news things.  If you’re an actor, getting cast is great news.  But do you want to get cast as the lead role in Ugly Betty?  That was the news for America Ferrera.  The project is about a young woman who is not terribly attractive, but certainly is an efficient secretary. The story is based on the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea (I am Ugly Betty).

Fox has cast the lead role in its drama pilot 13 Graves from exec prod and writer J.H. Wyman, with Matthew Lillard (you know him from Scooby-Doo among other projects) The adventure story is about an ex-treasure hunter now in search of his missing brother and as it happens, also in search of Incan gold.  The project is from 20th Century Fox TV.

Also at NBC, the network has cast Kyle Chandler in the lead role of Friday Night Lights, based on the 2004 film.  Chandler will play Coach Eric Long, the same role played by Billy Bob Thornton in the film.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Michael Anderson has been promoted to VP/Project Development for Razor & Tie Entertainment, based at the company’s headquarters in New York City.  He will report to SVP/Finance & Operations Victor Zaraya.  Michael’s many responsibilities include overseeing all phases of the creation and development of music compilations and the production of the majority of direct response television commercials.

ABC Radio Networks announced that Debbie Yu has joined as Account Executive to the New York Sales office and will report to Chip Gedney, Senior Director/New York Sales for ABC Radio Networks. Debbie will be responsible for the sales efforts for ABC Radio Networks properties in the New York region.

NCC has upped Charlie Holmes to VP/Director of Sales & Strategic Planning, reporting to Dan Griffin, SVP/Sales. Charlie will head up the centralization of NCC’s planning strategies as well as monitoring and analyzing revenue trends and oversee all sales efforts for New York and LA.

DLT Entertainment has named Elfyn Morris as new Head/International Sales, working out of the UK office.  Elfyn’s directive is to expand the sales division and introduce DLT programming and formats into new territories worldwide.  His responsibilities include sales of DLTs catalogue of programs to the UK as well as the rest of the world (excluding the US).
